One small point. A Belleville washer (a spring) allows you to adjust and maintain the friction on the jaws.

Hello Alan: Yes it keeps tension on the mating surfaces. If it were removed when you loosen the nut enough for the shears to move freely there would be a gap between the jaws which would leave a burr. Thanks for watching. Jere

Thanks for sharing! I found a place here in Sweden that stocks that exact same diamond stone and they were much cheaper than I expected. I really don't have anything good for making sure things are flat but I think one of those might be a good start.

Hello Joe: Before you take your shears apart look for that small line just below the cutting surface. And then make a cut to see if you are getting more resistance than when they were new. If you are happy with the results of the cut wait a while. The Willits crud gets me every 2 or3 years so I'm good for a while. Thanks. Jere

Thanks Jere, I have some questions. I thought there would be a few cuts with a stone across the perpendicular plane of the cutting edge?. Will this process work with the old bulldog style shears too? Would sharpening a HF Beverley shear be the same process?

Hi Silk Hat: 1. Never touch the top of the cutting edge of this type of shear. By sharpening the side shown her it restores the sharpness of the serrations on the top. 2. If you are talking about the regular Tin Snips that are like scissors then then no. They should be draw filed on the top surface just like your household scissors. 3. Yes. Only sharpen the angled area under the top surface. Here again you must maintain a single plane throughout it's entire length. Both top and bottom shear plate. Dyken will help establish and maintain the proper angle. Good questions Mr. Hat. Jere

Hello Geeper: That's the reason I made this video. No more buying a new set when they get dull. The next time you are at a swap meet and see an old pair of Wiss dutchmans, buy them. The material is tougher and the blades are a little narrower (better for turning corners). That's why I'm still using the ones I got in the 80s. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe. Jere

Hi Drew, That's why I made this tutorial. I have gone to other shops to do workshops and finely started taking my own snips if they were to be used in my demonstration. Hi Michael. Thank you for your input. I try to give information that will be use full for a beginner or has not had much experience with the subject at hand. I watched the first part (first 7 min.) of this and was quite bored myself. If you listen to it as a beginner you can pick up many tips that I had been taught back in 1963. I appreciate your comment but I feel that the beginner needs to hear the small details that make the job easier and will turn out a better product. I really like getting comments like yours because they will help me to make better videos in the future. Jere

@@jerekirkpatrick2092 True, but on my 27" iMac screen at a video resolution of 720p then the label on the bottle wasn't readable and since I'd never heard of Dykem before then I wasn't sure what you'd said. Thanks to Google I managed to find it. Thanks for the video. I have some similar snips and so I'll bear in mind your advice. I also bought that diamond block from Amazon as it looks neat. I already have a diamond stone but the block has more grades.

Make sure you use proper personal protection equipment!! That dye is very bad for you read the label.
