Shingling a wooden storage shed roof is important for a great looking and long lasting shed. For this project you will need: roofing felt, drip edge, shingles, 1'' roofing nails, utility knife and tin snips.
Start with a smooth even roof. Begin by cutting a piece of roofing felt a little bit longer than your roof. Begin at the lower edge of the roof, nailing the roof felt to the panels. Then cut the felt flush with the roof. Install the next layer of felt by overlapping the first layer by 3 inches. At the roof peak, let the felt overlap to the other side. Install felt on the other side the same way.
To install the drip edge, begin at the corner with the drip edge flush to the front trim. Attach the drip edge by using roofing nails. At the bends, use tin snips to cut the bottom flange and bend the drip edge over.
Install a starter row of shingles across the lower edge of the roof. Put these on with the rain slots upward. Leave a 1 inch overhang. Use 4 nails per shingle and don't nail above the sealing strip. At the back, let the shingles overhang; they will be trimmed later.
For the first row of shingles, line up the notch on the first shingle with the drip edge and the lower edge, flush to the starter row. Install the first row all the way to the back of the storage shed. Stagger your shingles by installing the second row with the first shingle flush to the drip edge.
At the bend in the roof, shingles should extend 3-4 inches over the bend, with the rain slot over the bend. At the peak, make sure there is 5 inches or less from the peak to the rain slot. Now trim the last row of shingles to the peak with a utility knife.
Cut shingles with a slight angle on the end with no color. Start at the front of the roof. Start with the first piece with the color side flush with the shingles. Nail near the sealing strip. Overlap pieces so 5 inches of the previous piece shows.
If you shingle correctly, your outdoor storage shed will look great for years to come.

Thank You so much for taking the time to make this video! We reshingle our 10 by 20 our barn shed using the methods in this video. It took 9 bundles of shingles. We did cut ridge caps for the top and used liquid nails to secure the shingle line that overlaps each side because it is winter and the asphalt strip won’t grab in cold weather. We didn’t want a wind gust to damage them.

We lost most of the shingles off our shed in Superstorm Sandy. We finally finished redoing it Monday. We followed these instructions, with one exception- we also put down some roofing sealant under the shingles. We just had a real howler of a squall come through here, and we didn't lose any shingles! Thanks guys! (Also, Gary E- we also used a multitool to trim the shingle edges, but we found the semicircular blade to work better.)

This was a helpful video for anyone who's going to shingle a roof whether it's on a garage, shed or house. As mentioned by others I hated to see that row of nails on the first ridge of the barn roof. My neighbor has a barn style shed and he did not nail the tabs. After the hot sun hit them a few days they laid down nice and flat without nailing the exposed tabs. Also as mentioned you could glue the tabs down with roof caulk or you can get a gallon bucket of roof patch for just a few bucks.

1. You can use a staple hammer tacker, easier to install felt. 2. Instead of trimming singles flush, allow a 1/4" to 1/2" overhang on perimeter to shed water away. 3 use starter single on perimeter to serve as your overhang trimming guide and trim as you go, usually what you trim at beginning will fit at the end so less waste. 4. If right handed, shingle from left to right.

5. Instead of nailing the tabs where the pitch changes, set those shingles in the sun to warm up and make them very flexible. They will contour to the pitch angle, place a dab of roofing cement under tabs for that course to keep them secure. A clean nail-less look. Warning, wear gloves. Roofing cement is sneaky and will get EVERYWHERE.. Face, arms, clothes, tools, once it's on you it will get everywhere. Also a hook blade works best. It let's you score the back(soft) side of the single.

I might say that this is a brilliant and excellent idea. Another essential part of building shed is the shingling of roof in order to make your shed more attractive and sturdy enough. I am grateful for sharing your knowledge and keep up the good work!

I didn't buy one of your sheds, but these videos were still very useful for me. I built my whole garage by myself, but the shed had a few different construction methods, I was mostly looking in to see if you guys bothered with the Drip edge. Only difference in me, I don't swing a hammer unless necessary, they make pneumatics for that ;)

I aint a roofer and I do believe this pattern will work but I think this way is called "stacking" and most pro roofers don't use this pattern. One you have to keep going 1 row at a time back and forth way to much moving. Pros do a offset 5 row pattern and do one swoop across the roof and have 5 rows done. As far as shed building again I am not a carpenter but I love to work with wood and just about anyone can build there own shed. I have built 2 sheds and they are "army' strong and built way better than the HD/Lowes sheds and cheaper too but and this is the kicker is it do take time to do it and do it right. A lot of research and contemplating how to go about the next step KZbin is your friend. Everything you need is right here on KZbin. Oh also a truck or "car with trailer" is a must= you can rent the trailer.

Thanks! Getting ready to shingle my barn / gambrel roof on my shed. Worrying about doing it right. Anyone want to help on some questions: 1) at the change of angles (at 4:00 in the video) do you need to plan vertical spacing before you even start to be sure you get the shingle to have the correct overhang at the bend? 2) Some people said to do all kinds of flashing / stuff I didn't understand at the bend. In the video and on my 20 year old shed, you just keep going. Both work I guess? 3) No drip edge at bottom (rake?) edge? There's not much extra cost. why don't you do all the edges? 4) 1" overhang at bottom and 0" on the sides? Just want to make sure I heard it right / see if anyone disagrees : ) 5) I have some self stick synthetic underlayment left over from my house getting reroofed last year by a pro. I was going to cover the bend and peak and if I have more, the bottom, just 'cause I have this material? Then felt over those areas and the bare sheathing in other spots? 6) the shed was built with OSB sheathing. that lasted 20 years (with a slow leak for 7 years). I am using exposure 1 plywood? that good? 7) any other tips?

Will this roof keep water out? Yes. Would I pass this roof? Absolutely not. Do NOT nail your bottom starter row up high on the tar strips. Nail it low into the bottom drip edge so the wind doesn't rip it all off. Never cut your shingles flush with the drip edge, you want 3/4 to a full inch of overhang. NEVER use nails below your tar line to keep shingles down at the bend of the roof. It looks terrible and unprofessional. Let the heat of the sun bend the shingles down and use a dab of blackjack or any other roofing contact cement between the exposed tab and the shingle underneath, I promise you it will hold better than any exposed nail ever will. But at the end of the day its just a little shed, follow the steps in this video and you will be just fine. Just don't apply what you learned on this video to roofing a sloped house or building.

What about the row at the top with the exposed nail heads? Seems like no nails should show, I would think that would be a way for water to seep under the singles...
@secondghost
@secondghost 8 жыл бұрын
+CHRIS RICE You can cover those with a colored caulking to match the shingle if you want. Or just leave it as it, I have never seen a leak from a nail hole unless you remove the nail and leave the hole open. The water molecules aren't small enough to squeeze through the space between the nail and the shingle and the sheeting on the roof.
@secondghost
@secondghost 8 жыл бұрын
+Fishingtuts The logic behind having the shingle hang over the drip edge is pretty simple. It helps eliminate water running down the side of you shingle, if it is flush with the drip edge, and eventually under the shingle. It's not a guarantee the water will go in or not, its just good practice. If you have installed your underlay correctly, whether its tar paper, synthetic roof wrap, or ice and water shield, you should be sitting pretty good regardless of how the edges of your roof are.

Would change way shingles are installed at pitch change between mansard and upper slope. Shingle up to pitch change, instead of leaving face nails, install row of cap shingles overlapping onto upper slope using same method as at ridge, then snap line 1/2" up from middle of cap, lay bead roof caulk, begin shingling upper slope. This method gives you longer life span and looks more professional than exposed nails. Use architectural shingles, hip/ridge cap, starters with sealing strip. :)

@4doorlife Yes you can always use rolled roof but it does not have the longevity of 3 tab shingles. Shingling this size shed is easy and shingles look SO MUCH nicer than roll roof but yeah you can do it.

The guy who installed the roof put the roofing material without leaving 1/2" space.Now what to do? I heard you can attach plastic apron on the roof so that the water will be directed into the gutter. How do I install the apron? Is it ok to install on top of glued roof? If yes, what kind of sealant to use? Btw: there is no fascia installed.

underlayment is completely useless when the shingles are installed because 1000's of holes are put into it when the shingles are put on. So when the pitch is steep, its even more better just to not use paper. Now if you ice and water the whole thing thats a different story, just way more expensiver

Can you help me? This video is fake. The roof structure he's shingling is sitting at ground level. How do you shingle while standing on a ladder? The felt rolls and the 90-pound bundles of shingles can't be loaded onto a gambol roof because it is way too steep (nearly vertical at bottom.) I've shingled dozens of houses. But how can one person do this, six feet up a ladder? Or even two or three people? I just don't get it.

Yo I’ve seen and been told by roofers who’ve work over 10 years to never nails into the glue line. It should be just a bit above it. Second, you never made a book pattern that the manufacturer recommends in your bundle. You always start with a full shingle with an overhang of 1/4 to 3/8 with flashing. Then, start your book of 5’ 5/8 depending on the bundle instructions. Lots of mistakes here not good.

Shingling while standing on a ladder. Huh. What are you standing on while applying the shingles? Not one shot shows this. It's not a ladder. A scaffold? You are always standing at the perfect height. The roof line is six feet off the ground but then you're standing on the ground (1:22) and it is suddenly just three feet off the ground. Magic. Imagine a real roofing job. Do you carry one shingle up the ladder at a time, or do you carry 90 pound bundles of shingles six to twelve feet up a ladder and have them hover in the air while you nail one shingle at a time? I can shingle but I don't see how you can install a roof that you cannot stand and kneel on.

@@yolandawebster7808 I used an 8-foot step ladder for standing when doing the lower section. I used a five-foot step ladder with some boards across it to hold a partial bundle of shingles. See the comment about doing a five-row pattern so you don't need to move the ladder between each single. The back of the GAF shingles bundle described this in more detail. I found the GAF instructions more helpful regarding placement of nails.
