Same! I must preface this by saying this is purely my opinion. I’ve had friends shoot fine with sights sans any time behind open sights. Open sights are like recurve bow shooting for me. Without the basic understanding thereof; you’re going to have a slightly harder time understanding the proper genius that is range estimation and adjustment. The math that goes into both is fairly easy to do, for both Minutes of Angle and Milliradians; but with some iron sight shooting under your belt, it helps you visualize what the gun itself is doing when you sight in an external optic and makes the understanding of the math more integral to your shooting. Hope everyone reading this is having a FINE day! Good luck and happy ventures!

My father was a shooting instructor during WW11 and trained soldiers to shoot the Springfield rifle at 1000 yard targets with iron sights.. I remember in basic training in 1962 shooting at 500 yards with the M1 with iron sights.

I find that hard to believe. During WW2 the standards for the M1 rifles were 200-300 yards targets. For M1903 rifles, you had to hit targets at ranges of 300-500 yards. The military never had a 1000 yards target training, even for so-called "snipers."

World war 11 didnt even happen yet but if you mean ww2 then stop the cap because The idea of shooting a 1000 yards didn't even exist at the time not in war nor competition the 1000 yards idea came about quite recently actually with the invention of high power scopes and match grade bullets and sub MOA rifle barrels which none have existed back in the 1940s or 50s or 60s or 70s or even the 80s so again stop the cap

Haven't had a chance to test if it holds zero, but mounts just fine and has nice clear glass. Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus!It's a great kzbin.infoUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!

I've done this up to 800 yards. The double aperture sights have an orthoptic effect, and the size of the apertures is calculated to fit the bulls-eye at all ranges (constant MOA). When the sights are properly aligned, the target seems to leap into sharp focus. This is, IMHO, Superior to a scope, but of course it only works on the size (in MOA) of targets. All you have to do then is 'dope' the wind.... there are flags for that. The ammunition used was standard 7.62 Nato 147gr FMJ. I managed to put ten rounds within 10" with a single shot Parker Hale target rifle..... Interesting...

Most challenging is shooting the .223 caliber US Service Rifle with its iron sights at 1000 yards. It requires Princess & The Pea feel for a consistent position and sight alignment. In addition, wind appraisal skill is essential just to place rounds in the 20 inch 10 ring. My best performance as I recall was a 374 and 6 out of 400. I think in one of those 2 matches I shot a 192. At any rate, it's much harder than iron sight match rifle division, where I earned an American High Power Rifleman distinction for shooting an average of 97%.

The black bullseye is based on a 'minute of angle'. So the black circle appears the same size at any range from 200 yards all the way out to 1,000 yards. They are using a aperture rear & front sight forming a series of concentric rings from the rear sight thru the front with that black bullseye in the center of a white ring. When everything looks centered you break the shot.
@NickHarman
@NickHarman 2 жыл бұрын
Actually you do vary the size of the foresight aperture as you go, at 1000 yards you employ a smaller aperture than at 600 to maintain the ideal amount of white around the black.

Paul. At that distance there are four of those flags, about 25 ft high, in lines, between the shooter and the target, every 200 yards. on Sat 11th Aug my club were shooting in our annual "Catastrophe" match at 900, 1000 @ 1100 yards (same sights etc) . Because of the topography of Bisley, hills, tree lines, open flats etc the wind can, and usually is, a "Ba*****"! Many times you can look along the nearest line of flags, only to have one blowing from left to right, the next one hanging limp, the one after going right to left and the one nearest the target blowing towards you....You can alter those configurations around any which way you want, sometimes from hour to hour. No kidding! Its a beautiful range to shoot on, but is incredibly demanding sometimes. The wind coaches really have their work cut out, and even trying to hold a rifle steady, with the wind buffeting the barrels & thick foresights around makes it very hard work sometimes. But its always good to be there, whether its baking hot, freezing cold or pi***** with rain, its always better than being at work!

The principles of marksmanship (consistent sight alignment and smooth trigger control) are the same for irons or optics. With irons you place the dominate eye to position the front sight post or aperture in the center of the rear aperture and anchor the relationship of sights to eye with a good stock weld. This is easy to make perfect, since the eye naturally wants to center things. That's good, because sight misalignment produces angular error, which increases with distance.

Noticed there was a box of .308-winchester from a sponsor. Assuming that is one of the calibers used. Could a shooter use a semi-automatic, precision rifle? Or, would that be illegal in the UK? If legal what is the highest legal magazine capacity in the UK. Glad to see those MOA units utilized. At 1000 yards, one MOA is 10.47-inch. If you can keep groups inside that 10.47" circle, without optics, shooting at 1000 yard target, your good. If interested there is the National Rifle Association Championships are Rapon, New Mexico. Both known and unknown range categories. Up to .50-caliber can be used. Also there is the annual match championships at Camp Perry, Ohio. If your good enough you possibly could be awarded the President's 100 award. Not easy to obtain. Try it out.

No. The government banned semi- auto fullbore rifles back in 97 I think it was, and fullbore handguns several years after that, both times because of "Nut Jobs" going on a killing spree, taking out a lot of people on both occasions. Thankfully, this seems to have worked as regards to "mass shootings" We can still own semi-auto .22 rimfire rifles & certain fullbore pistols, but these have to comply with some very strict rules, mainly regarding overall length. If anyone ever tells you we don't have firearms in this country, get them to watch this vid. Bisley, 150 yrs and still going strong!

It is a mistaken image, created probably politically, that no one outside the US has firearms interest which is not true. British and Australia have firearm enthusiasts. I am recently retired LE and have many contacts in the UK LE. Armed criminals are common place and line police officers are very vulnerable and must wait (and hope) that units called Armed Police can get the scene to even out the confrontation. Competitive shooting is alive and well in many nations who we think have NO GUNS. Drug trafficking is a profitable, worldwide crime and drug people are armed no matter what country, if only to protect themselves from the competition. It also is possible for UK residents to own firearms thought the permit process is extensive. Sooner or later we have to realize that crime is not about guns it is about criminals and the ide of no guns in the world is a false idea. This is a video of ordinary people enjoying shooting sports.
