When you're in the music shop, you don't "know" the sound of the room, and you don't know if the cymbal blends with your other cymbals. That's why I always take my own cymbals and sticks with me as a reference.

Right on about testing a few others with the one you want. I have an assortment of cymbals from different brands. So I’ll take my most used crashes to the store with me, set them up and see how a new one will fit with the ones I already have. Using all your techniques of course.😉

"So if you're a Zildjian person, you want to try out some K's, pair it up with some A's...they don't necessarily have to all be in the same line." - They don't even have to be from the same *brand* as far as I'm concerned. Unless you have a cymbal endorsement, there's really no reason why your kit has to have *all* Zildjian or *all* Meinl or whatever. Everyone has their ideal conception of what a ride cymbal should sound like, what a pair of hats should sound like, what a high crash should sound like, what a low crash should sound like...the odds of finding all of that from one cymbal brand is actually pretty small. I mean, I understand not wanting to have a mutt-looking kit, but there are so few situations where that actually matters.

Doctor! I promise not to hit it “like a soft shoe candy pants!” LMAO! I love it THANKS. Sometimes I feel pretty conscientious about hitting those cymbals at the music store when so many people go in there and start hitting those things all day! Kijiji is a good friend for buying good cymbals for less money. I found an ad for a 16 AAXplosion crash along with an 18 AAXplosion crash. Had to drive a little over an hour but I bought them both, in like new condition, for 230 dollars. Went to Long and McQuade and they had the same cymbals in stock: 460 dollars with taxes, so I paid half. Bought a HHX Revolution ride the same way for 180 bucks. McQuade's price, well over 300 dollars. Yes, I have all Sabian cymbals. They are high quality and a Canadian company, so it's a no brainer for me.

Hi Rob! Great Video, but I would say, definitely check out the specs and consider your playin! Scott Lowell even with highly rated buyers sometimes the cymbal isn’t as good as another one I have played. One of the reasons I primarily play Paiste is the consistency from cymbal to cymbal. I never worry about the cymbal sounding completely different to the one I played in the store

@@thesneakygamer4343 I agree! My first cymbal was a used 18" Zildjian Dark K crash that I bought in a pawn shop back in 1986 for $10.00. It had a 2 inch crack, so I drilled holes on each side and it's still one of my favorite sounding cymbals and it still sings after all these years! I have a set of gig drums\cymbals that I can afford to damage and another set of drums\cymbals that stays in my studio covered. John Bonham: Brushes? Nah, Hit 'em as hard as you can!

Maybe the best advice I ever got about buying a crash cymbal is to bring your ride with you to the shop. You can have a great crash cymbal and a great ride cymbal but they might not go together. Dark dry rides and bright crashes don't work together imo for example but not all bright tones work together so it's good to know the sound you're going for.

If it's a crash, put it with a kit and play it with the bass drum as loud as you think you are going to hit it. No bell needed for a crash. You can hear a nice cymbal right away pretty much. If it's a ride, you really concentrate on the bell and see how washy it is and/or how clear it sounds.

Always enjoy your videos Rob, and I learn something from you every time. I assume you can only mention some brands. My working brass is Zildian A's or Sabian AAX's. I usually don't worry about trying out a new one because I assume that the same model cymbals are going to harmonize with each other, although one kit I use has a Sabian one side and Paiste on the other (I thought I'd sworn off Paiste's almost 50 years ago but this one's gorgeous). Anyway, am I making the wrong assumption thinking a different size should match just fine with the same model cymbals?

How to shop for high-end cymbals: 1. Get on Craigslist 2. Find someone who's trying to sell ALL their good quality gear quickly because they have to move or pay rent (or whatever) 3. Buy it all 4. Clean and refurbish drums and hardware 5. Sell nice clean drums and hardware for as much or more than you paid for everything 6. Keep high-end cymbals for a net cost of zero or less

I take my phone with and the music I want to use it for and play it and test the cymbal. I have a good ear and can tell the difference between the cymbals. I check several factors of the sound to see if they fit . Really most don’t. I am very picky. It’s always a very expensive cymbal that matches my sound specs. 😜🤣😂 I guess you get what you pay for. Some are cymbals from the 70s that are hard to find exactly. I don’t get hung up on Brands. I have quite a variety.

Thanks heaps for this. What would you recommend for following these ideas where you can't get heaps of options? I'm in New Zealand and it seems each store only has a narrow range of stuff to try. I'm researching and window shopping currently for my own first kit - but I've played other kits a while back for some time, from super budget to super high end (my old man has a Sonor Hilite and Istanbul kit for instance). I know quality when I see it or hear it, but pretty nervous to go into a store and go with whatever narrow range they have. Alternative seems to be to listen to videos online and order blind from the US and hope the particular example of X cymbal sounds as planned. Thoughts and tips super welcome. :) PS - keep up the channel, it's super awesome!

Get your headphones on and go to the Paiste website. Add all 3 to the sound room and compare. The beautiful thing about Paiste is their consistency. Pretty much what you hear online is what you get.
