I've never had lessons. I wish i had though. I'm learning rudiments 10 years later. I discovered I'm terrible at all of them. I"m going back to square one. Including holding sticks and applying rudiments. I'm trying to break 10 years of bad habits.

Flam Drags!! They helped me immeasurably. If you get them clean, they can really spice up your fills. Secondly, you can play triplets in 3 sets of four, accenting different notes on each set. I dont know if that would properly be called a "grid," but it would look like: Rlr Lrl Rlr Lrl rLr lRl rLr lRl rlR lrL rlR lrL (back to top without missing a beat)
@toms48887 жыл бұрын
Also do that in paradiddles

anything thing my drum teacher at uni taught me was going through loops of the different stickings for triplets like rll rll rll rll rlr lrl rlr lrl lrl rlr lrl rlr llr llr llr llr and whatever other permutations you can think of, maybe throwing in some kick as well to get some bonham triplets working in smoothly

Awesome lesson! My humble advice for rudiments is maybe try practicing them with the weak hand lead. Been doing exactly that since the start of 2018, and trust me, everything feels so much easier to play! Actually it's not that tricky at all, dare I say 80% effort for that is mental! :)

Knows how too keep it entertaining! My favorite drum teacher on KZbin. I'm trying to play like he does with least amount of energy and max output.. I'm 57. I'm trying to make all movements. Smooth and drop the sticks on the head of the drum cleanly without any sideways movement . I'm a contractor and this actually helps me hammer in nails into concrete in that if you don't hit the nail. Perfectly square it will go off sideways and just chip the concrete and then you gotta start over. It scan be very frustrating and. Takes a steady hand . Ask any carpet installer about the trouble hammering concrete nails into cheap. Flakey concrete.. cheers goose guys and rock the eff out! Yes haw Elmer effers

I haven't had a kit for four years now. I think i've gotten every possible sound and volume I can out of my practice pad. It's still fun to practice the hell out of rudiments. I'm still working on that double stroke substitution you did in another video.

I never thought to approach practicing rudiments this way. Definitely will do it from now on. The pad can sometimes trick you into hitting harder than you ought to and this ruins you style on the drums. Thank you very much for this tip, Rob.

Yes, yes, yes. It is all about the hands. Great advice and exercise. Reminiscent of David Garibaldi’s three level sound concept from “Future Sounds,” and we all know how killers his ghost strokes are with Tower of Power. Stick control is key kids, work those hands.

Hi, Rob, Are the extreme dynamics (fortissimo accents and pianissimo ghost notes) to be used for general playing or as a practice technique. Thanks for the vids, but would appreciate your thoughts.
@n0iseboy6 жыл бұрын
Peter Clarke I'll field this one...If music is the spice of life, dynamics is the spice of music. Ghost notes add feel to the music, although for the most part they aren't heard. I did pro audio for a while. I'd watch the drummer play while listening and the ghost notes just don't cut through a mix. I know accept, that even though I can't truly discern every ghost note played, I think perhaps my brain is still picking up on it, and it is adding a feel that I can't necessarily hear. It's a paradox...but yes...use full dynamic range in your performance.

Did Tony Williams practice on pillows? I know that Dennis Chambers practiced that way. I guess they tried not to rely so much on rebound, just powered the second double into the head. Tony would play the "ritual" and you couldn't tell he was changing rudiments. All all the strokes sounded the same! Those guys have incredible strong sounding chops, obviously.
