It feels like narrow (front) hips, relative to a regular sized tush. As I put on weight, this crotch excess gets worse, except for Levis. A good 2 inches of excess in the front, exactly where this video shows, just below the zip. Makes the front legs splay off to the outside, and I'm pulling the pants back up all day long.
@buzoff4642 Жыл бұрын
@@JSternDesigns If you were sewing them yourself, why didn't you pinch the 3/4" from that location in the pattern and carry to outer edge (like a dart), before cutting the fabric out? Just saw something like this on Fit To Stitch episode this morning. She said excess body space in pants is on purpose, so general size can get them on. Wish Nancy Zieman did a video on pants. I tried making Burda patterned pants, and I'm not happy with the fit, so still working on thoughts before I try again. And your video's hitting right on my trouble area - store bought pants trouble area. Thanks for any info you may have.

Hi Jen, This video is truly FABULOUS!! I have a RTW pull-up pant w/ elastic waistband from Talbot that was just feeling too baggy in the front causing me too pull it up all the time. I was getting ready to remove the entire waistband, trim 1.5 “ all along the top of the pants and reattach the waistband when I remembered you had covered rise issues before somewhere. (I took your Happy Pants class a while back.) Luckily I found this video and I wish I could post a picture on here to show you the results. I took out 1.5” from the front rise and .5" from the back, tapering to nothing at about 10" down the inseam on both sides. And I'm here doing the happy dance thanks to you!! Thank you and stay well. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos. Just found you on KZbin. Great videos! 🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. In the case that the pant is pushing (uncomfortably when walking) on the area of the leg above the knee the area between the knee and crotch. Where do we alter the pant? Would it be better to pull up at waist if it’s an elastic waisted pant (no zipper)? Maybe my problem is not using the correct search words to find the alteration. So happy today this video happened to pop up when I’ve been searching for months, trying to learn the science behind crotch sewing.
@JSternDesigns Жыл бұрын
So happy you found me! Thank you for subscribing to my channel. Usually when the pants feel snug when you're walking.. the front crotch is too low. Think about the crotch like it's a hinge. The farther away the crotch is, the less range of motion you have. You can use this method to pick up the front crotch to bring it up. You can also pull out excess at the CF waistline first and then see if you need to remove more using this method if you do. Here's another video that explains this fit issue if you were adjusting a pattern: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g33Gh6yZrNGWrKM Hope this helps! Thanks for watching

Oh my gosh, I just sewed a pair of jeggings for my six-year-old granddaughter which I made a copy from a pair of leggings she had. The front was a little too baggy and I was just going to take up the front seam going from the waist down to the crotch, but I guess that would have been the wrong way as I see you were taking it from left to right. I would’ve done it completely wrong. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much... and Yes, instead of taking the inseam apart and pulling out the excess just in the front, sew deeper through both the front and back inseams through the crotch... Thank you for all your videos. You are one of the most thorough for almost every kind of fitting issue I've needed. What is the maximum amount of fabric that can be removed with this method? If the front rise needs shortened by 1 3/4", will this still work?
@JSternDesigns2 жыл бұрын
1 3/4" Is a lot to remove this way... You can do it if you have a lot of extra ease along the upper thigh... The deeper you go up the front crotch points, the more your taking off the inseams too. You can also take the waistband off, shorten the zipper and trim the excess length off the front and sew the waistband back on. Here's a tutorial for that (maybe do a combination of these to get the rise right!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2nMdWiboNt1qck

I have always thought you get a better crotch fit if your crotch seam is finished by sewing the legs together first and then sew the center seam from the front to back, is this true? Thanks for the seam ripper tip!
@JSternDesigns2 жыл бұрын
Happily the crotch doesn't know which seam was sewn first... If you sew them inseams then crotch seam AND crotch seams, then inseams using an accurate seam allowance, the shape will be the same. When you make pants with a front fly, it's actually easier to finish the front and back crotch seams first.. then put the legs together. When you're fitting a pant muslin, it's easier to work with if you sew the inseams first then the crotch seam ... because you can scoop the crotch without taking out the intersection between inseams/crotch!

I’m working to use this adjustment on a jumpsuit, but the amount of fabric I need to take out is substantial, about 3”. In this case is it better to take 1.5” out of the front and back sides of the crotch curve where the front and back pieces meet, to more evenly distribute the amount of fabric that needs to be removed?
@JSternDesigns2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do that... You can also take out the waist seam and take out some of the fabric along the bodice or pant edge. Good Luck!! Thanks for fitting along with me.

Would you not measure the 3/4 inch from the original seam line (not from the fabric edge)? 5:27
@JSternDesigns Жыл бұрын
That's a great question! The amount that you measure from the edge to extend past the back edge is the amount you are shortening the rise. This makes it ease to see what you're going. ...Then sew on the original stitching line to finish it. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for watching

Very nice! Much easier than trying to move a waistband down

Thank you for this video. I've been trying ways to alter ready to wear slacks. So many of them have excess in the crotch. I got a pair of linen pants on sale from a major catalog. Waist thighs and backside seem to be just right, not much extra room. but I am able to pinch 3 inches (1 1/2 x 2). I'm going to give this method a try, but it sounds like a lot of inches to remove. Any comments? Thank you

:) In this tutorial I show taking the inseams out several inches... This works great if you need to remove less than 1" from the crotch extensions... An 1 1/2" is a significant amount to remove... Take the inseams out to the knee so you have a longer distance to ease them back together. ...And, I would baste the inseams back together and double check that you didn't take out too much before you cut off the excess. Good Luck & Thanks for watching

@@JSternDesignsthanks for the quick reply. I’ll let you know how it works out, but it will take me a few weeks to get up the nerve to do it. I have tried e success removing the front of the waistband. Taking the three inches from the top at the center and tapering off to each side. And reattaching the waistband. Those pants didn’t have zippers.

This is EXACTLY my problem. Great option for correction. Just wondering, however, if you could remove the amount from the top at the waistband? Thanks so much!

Fantastic video so easy to understand! Question - how do you adjust both the front and back rise? I have to take about 3 inches total from the crotch of my pants, but the thighs are not really loose so I'm worried about how to feather it down to the original seam. Thanks!!!

If you don't have enough ease on the leg to take all the total amount by sewing through both the front and back inseams and crotch... take as much as you can out (without making the leg too snug.) Then you can take off the waistband and shorten the rise from the top of the waistline too. Here's a tutorial showing how to shorten the zipper and rise in the front... you can also take some of the back kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2nMdWiboNt1qck Hope this helps! Thanks for fitting along with me

Will this work for a polyester jumpsuit for a rise that is like 5 inches way too low?
@JSternDesigns Жыл бұрын
Some pants styles are designed for the crotch to hang below the body. It sounds like this might be the case with your jumpsuit. .... You can try taking out the inseam (down to knee level) and pinning it back together to get rid of some of the difference between where it's sitting to where you want it to sit. Baste the inseam back together and see how it fits. If the upper thigh has enough excess ease, you may be able to do it! Good Luck.

I have a pair of high waisted flared jeans and the hem goes slightly above my ankle. When I pull the jeans down a little (making them low rise jeans)the hem goes past my ankle, I prefer the low waist look but then it makes the crotch area look weird and baggy. Can I use this method to take out the excess? Or would it not work for this? Great video btw, v informative.
@JSternDesigns Жыл бұрын
You can try to take some of the length out here (but it won't make the hem lower)... and you can also take the waistband off and trim off some of the fabric and shorten the zipper to lower the rise. This tutorial shows just shortening the front rise, but you can also take the entire waistband off and shorten the back if you need to too kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2nMdWiboNt1qck Thanks for fitting along with me

Thanks for your videos. Excellently explained techniques.. Currently I am interested to lower the rise of my jeans. I watched this video how to take off an excess from the crotch area and another video how to remove the rise from the front top. So my question is: can you do it all together plus to remove the rise from the back as well? My jeans have very high waste, they are very long from the crotch area to the top. So, if I belt it high to have the crotch area in right place,, I throw off body proportions (looks like I hove no torso, just legs :) ) , if wear it lower, the crotch is too low. I like them because they are comfy, but I need to fix them to have them fit better. I am looking forward to your answer, Thanks again.

My Pleasure! Yes, you can combined the techniques to lower the rise on both ends! In the back, you may need to take off the back yoke and trim some off the top of the back leg IF the back yoke doesn't have enough vertical depth to take it off the top. Also, if you're taking off a significant amount along the crotch, you may need to take the inseams out to the knee to ease them back in together! Hope this helps, Thanks for watching!

Hi! I just tried to adjust my pants like this, but I realized by pulling down the front side, it would have more fabric than the backside and therefore wrinkle heavily. I didn't even know how to put any pins in without having the fabric create unwanted folds that would end up being sewn into the pants. What can I do about this?
@JSternDesigns6 ай бұрын
If you're pulling out a significant amount from the front, you will need to take out the inseam down to the knee or even a little lower so you can ease the front into the back inseam. Hope this helps, thanks for watching, Jen
