Oh man, here come the classical music police. Amazing rendition, very impressive. As a classical musician I can say without a doubt most professional classical musicians are often quite oblivious to the inner workings of music theory. Jazz and even rock musicians are better improvisers and know their stuff inside and out. The fact anyone would hate on this video boggles my mind. Excellent video as always

lol. Funny comment. I'm starting the phrase on the low B on the 5 string...or you can just bend the high F if you have 22 frets on a 4 string bass.

Awesome, I love heavy metal and classical. The first classical piece I learned was Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Hi everyone. I've keep getting asked for a rundown of my solo arrangement of Solfeggietto so here you go. You can see the whole practice diary (including sheet music/tab PDF download) over here: bit.ly/2i0SFQF

I have a bass with 22 frets, so instead of going up to the 24th fret (end of 3rd bar) I would go to the g on the 12th fret and play the next bar an octave lower before going up again (maybe at the start of bar 5 shifting from Eb at the 6th fret to the c at the 15 fret). It will sound different for sure, but since we "run out of notes" anyway, we probably can afford that freedom of expression ;)

I love this lesson, but at 6:40 I don't see why that Eb isn't played on the 13th fret D sting little finger (as it was in the first passage), which basically keeps the left hand in that same area without that 8th to 13 fret stretch?

YES! About six or eight weeks ago, I told myself I needed to learn to play something new, out of my comfort zone. I'm not a big jazz enthusiast, but I like classical. started to teach myself Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. I checked my email this evening, and what to my wondering eyes did appear? Talkingbass.net with this totally awesome arrangement! Thank you thank you thank you! Lewd wig will have to wait a bit.

Moonlight Sonata's a good one to learn. Check out Stu Hamm's version. Also, try the 3rd movement for a REAL workout! (You'll need to condense it A LOT to fit on the bass!)

It's beautiful Mark; but I'm just wondering, to put forth the effort to learn a classical piece, what is the application? For instance.....(?) there is nothing I can think of, outside of playing for my own satisfaction in my room. For someone who is not looking to be in a band, or play for wedding receptions (top 40) or a string quartet (acoustic instruments) not really interested in jazz at all, average skills...(4 years) developed a love for classical on electric bass (Bach mostly) but where is the application, I cannot justify the time, expense and learning curve just to say 'I played it' ? I take lessons but do not have any formal training; I have a full time office job, practice time is limited and the musical plateaus are becoming insurmountable, I have to let the lessons go soon, I just started this as a hobby, did not know I would fall in love with the bass, thinking of giving up and so discouraged.

I love your sound and the articulation is excellent. However I think it is a little too clean - I suggest you reimagine how this would sound if played on a French 18th century organ which had many colors. Without going overboard see how it could inform the color you chose for your sewtting of the bass guitar (eg the amplifier etc). I am not a bass player but as a pianist/organist and composer I think it would help in selecting the timbre and how you intone a few notes. I am glad you are emphasizing the harmonic framework of the piece - people forget sometimes that in the bevy on notes, the figured bass technique had reached maturation and if you block the piece into triads you will see how the piece can be reduced to a series of moves between tonic and dominant, circle of fifth with some surprises. And glad you mention breaking it down, this piece is excellent in enforcing this excellent practice technique as the work has very well defined phrases which you can work within. Glad to hear this piece is as great fro one's technique and musicality for bassists as it is for keyboardists. For those who get the piece down two ways to increase the difficulty - transpose it to a not so key friendly for bass - f # minor forexample. Or for fun work with another bassist who has gotten the piece down see if you can habve a second guitarist improvise a canon either at the octave, fifth etc. Kind of cool results you might get.

Don't worry too much about 'proper' technique. The reason there's a lot of conflicting stuff is because everyone has there own approach. Check out Bobby Vega and Cody Wright for some inspiration.
