There are 4 reasons to shred your own cheese. It definitely tastes better, but it is also healthier. Powdered cellulose is a filler and anti-caking agent that is put in shredded cheese. Did you know that cellulose is made from wood pulp or cotton. While the FDA says it is safe to ingest, do you really want to when you can shred your own cheese and avoid this.

Make sure the cheese is made with ORGANIC RENNER too, Tillmook is one of the few that does.

I shred my own cheese with food processor and then freeze. Never used anything to keep it from sticking. I have to try that next time.

Does it stick if you dont put anything on it? I have always put just a few tsp of something on it to keep from sticking. Someone suggested powdered milk, which I am going to try.

You make this look so easy Sandy! Can you tell me how long it takes to defrost once you take the bag out of the freezer? Thanks so much! Great video! Janel in NJ
@sandysteinbrook
@sandysteinbrook 21 күн бұрын
Hello, Janel! You can lay it out not the counter at room temperature and it will be defrosted enough to easily use within an hour. If I need to hurry the process, I stick it in the microwave for about 25 seconds so it is pliable to use.

Pre- prepared Grated cheese as well call it in England has starch added to it to stop it sticking together. It's also ridiculously expensive because it's been grated. Check the price per Kg when buying. It's likely twice or three times the cost of a block. Cheese factories buy blocks of cheese from cheese makers and they literally slice, dice and grate it and package it and make a tonne of money. Just do it yourself ❤

Wait. What? Now you add carbs by adding GMO flour? Sad... Imma skip that step and also plan on using the food processor to get there faster. Oh, and I'm pretty sure I'll keep the empty labeled expensive ziploc bags in the freezer for the next 2 pound brick from Sam's. Thanks for the idea.😀

@sandysteinbrook 21 күн бұрын
Yes, potato starch is another one of the things that can be used as an additive and bulking agent. So is powdered cellulose and Natamyacin. I just choose to control what is being added to our food. That way I get better tasting cheese and I get more cheese by doing it myself.

Hello! You can add some flour, or someone suggested powdered milk. It just needs to be a very light amount and the cheese won't stick together. It does not need to be powdered heavily.
