Thank you for your advice on kicking, my father was in the U.S. Army back in during the Gulf War but an illness has rendered his legs relatively crippled so he can't demonstrate his old martial arts technique when it comes to leg work. And he admits he is not good at teaching by word of mouth either. So again thanks for helping people like me add better kicks to our good punches. :)

When I competed as a kick boxer, I found two uses for the side kick. First, off the tracks _but timed to my opponents attack_. This is done in the heat of battle so you have to be practiced and comfortable throwing a side kick while moving/fighting. First, is when your opponent is coming at you throwing punches. Both you and he are fighting orthodox, i.e., left foot forward. He throws a 1-2, jab cross. Evade the jab by fading back while staying in striking distance. When your opponent follows through with his cross, step off to your left kicking into the open space created by his outreached arm. It's an open hit and shocking as shit. Second, again with you and your opponent in an orthodox position, use the side kick against your opponent's slow or telegraphed right, back leg roundhouse. As the opponents back leg is coming around, front leg side kick him. Lean back and down to create space for the kick to happen and to act as defense. This is especially effective against kickers who don't fully pivot around for their back leg kick. They end up squaring off, presenting a perfect full-body target. Practice both slowly with a partner and I think you'll see what I mean.

I just wanted to add it is possible to "stop the train dead in its tracks " while being smaller and the charging opponent bigger. BUT and I really emphasize BUT, your side kick has to be solid like a spear. Timing and target has to be perfect and you have to stand your ground and seriously COMMIT to your technique. When I was 16 5' 5" and 110lbs soaking wet. I ended up doing very light sparring with a new student who was around 6'1 and maybe 170-180lbs. Since I was smaller, he thought he could bully me around with his weight and size. He wasn't pulling his punches and i really got knocked around just blocking those techniques. Since he wouldn't take it easy after asking him a few times, I finally didn't have much choice and had to protect myself. He charged at me with something like a superman punch (jump flying reverse punch) I was in his tracks but i leaned back to dodge the punch and the threw that side kick which caught his ribs. It was like a cavalry charge stopped by a solid immovable spear. I wasn't knocked back because I had correct form and newton's law took care of the rest. It was like he hit a brick wall and his body folded slightly into my side kick. I found out later he fractured his ribs. I felt bad and apologized but hey he was beating me around like a rag doll. Although its possible to face the train you really need to have solid side kick, timing, and perfect target. But again its its probably more sensible like Sensei Ando says and side step the train then throw your sidekick. But I just wanted to point out that option is there if you find yourself with limited options.
@AndoMierzwa4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that experience! Yes, with the right timing position, you can move 1000 pounds with 1 ounce. But playing the odds, I get out of the way! 😁👍🏼

Hey Sensei (checked your website). Nice video again, I'm catching up with all your others hehe. Dunno if it's the right place to ask : Is it possible to have a video made about the difference between fighting/sparring and street self defense (more like self protection, as we do have to attack not only defend)? For me, I've always said that fighting/sparring engages a lot of techniques and tactics (either you know your opponent, and you act accordingly, or you just know his style, for example a TKD fighter, I'd bombard him with low kicks to disable his legs etc...) whereas in self protection, it's more about mind set/intention (I see someone aggressive, I raise my hands, if he attacks I turn into "Him, Down, Now" mode and after blocking, dodging his first attack I overwhelm him with attacks then locks. I'd like your input on that. Also how to make the connection between what you learn in sparring, and what you can use in street self protection. Thank you and keep up the good work!
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Habibian "Him Down Now!" That is my new war cry! :) That's a huge question and deserves more than one video... that may be a full course! For now, let me say that I try not to separate sparring and self-defense. When I spar, my mindset is to control you and never give you a chance to hit me. Sure, I practice starting from bad positions or run experiments where I get hit, but my goal is always self-defense. Thanks for this question, Daniel! It's a good one! :)
@danielhabibian94208 жыл бұрын
+Ando Mierzwa I see, because there are a lot of little things I say to my students, that are only for sparring. For example : When they train let's say the roundhouse kick, some tend to telegraph it a bit (as in get their knee up but already slightly on the side). I tell them in the street it's fine, as most people aggressing you aren't martial artists and wouldn't know what's coming.Whereas in sparring, I'll emphasize the fact that they have to start it as they would for a front kick, knee up straight ahead, then they can go for a roundhouse, front, or side kick. Just an example of the huge difference that I come across between sparring and self defense
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Habibian I see. Well, I wouldn't underestimate anyone on the street or on the mats. If anyone can see my kick coming, then it's a lousy kick. That's why for me, I coach sparring the same as self-defense.

I understand. Thanks for the input

Get "Stretching Scientifically" by Thomas Kurz (Amazon ebook was about US $8). It is one of the very few books that does not just tell you the stretches (you really only need 3-4 total) but the whys and how. 98% of martial artists do not know how to warm up let alone stretch properly. Kurz explains it and has a Q&A in the back of the 4th Ed.

Hey sensei ando i got a question. Do you ever recommend training twice a day. I got a boxing match coming up in may 28 im just real nervous and just want to be ready. What do you suggest? p.s. im just an amateur
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sure, training twice a day is not a problem. The trick is to allow yourself time for recovery. So, maybe you focus on cardio and conditioning in one workout, but skills in another. Maybe you spar in one workout, and work a bag in another. There are so many different ways to train. You want to set up a schedule that maximizes your gains but doesn't burn you out. Of course, everybody is different, so figuring out your ideal schedule takes some experimentation. Good luck on your upcoming bout! Keep your hands up! :)

To sensei-san, Can you please make a toturial on how to do a follow-up attack after a side/ front kick? I've spar with a street brawler and his side kick is NOT a feint , it hits very hard when I receive it and pushes the force to my back by letting it hit me and turning side ways a bit to let the force goes away, he turns his leg around and with his back to me I thought that was a good time to attack, he spun his fist to my face and knocked me down ( not knock out ) . I know it's easy that requires experience but I can't do it ni matter how much I tried. And I've many other ways he did it , for example : landing a high kick that snaps his leg and when he puts his leg down behind his horse stance and use his left leg to do a side kick causing serious damage to his opponent. ( Note that it is not illegal, it's just that I've been practicing my own combat arts and he is quite the expert so I required a sparring teammate. )

Depends. I had much success with the sidekick against bigger opponents. I liked to think of them impaling themselves on my heel. In fact, if you practice timing it against an opponent who is jabbing or rushing in it can work. Think of this; the more committed to the attack your opponent is , the faster he moves in to meet your heel. A head on collision, if you will. The more you can wait til the last split second to throw it, the more extended he will be on his punch. That means his ribs become very vulnerable w out the ability to contract his torso muscles to take the hit. A drill we used to practice was standing face on to opponent, then he moves and you kick. Not already facing your hip towards him in other words. Advanced version was with hands behind your back as if handcuffed.
@AndoMierzwa5 жыл бұрын
You can definitely use it to impale someone, but I find it risky when momentum is against you. Now, about those handcuffs… 😟

Very well laid out; short and sweet, and the recapping helped me retain your information easier! I am building my page to appeal to tai chi/martial arts practitioners. If you have any suggestions please share your wisdom/criticism!

Hi Eric! Always glad to see more people sharing the arts... keep it up! I'd say tipping your phone sideways to get a fuller picture is always a good idea. And I always like a quick intro explaining what you're doing. Good for you for putting yourself out there!

Thank you, Mr. Mierzwa! I admit, I do have moments of fear starting a career in this field, but the more encouragement and advice I receive from pros such as yourself really help. Is this the best way for you to receive questions? I want to be considerate of your comments section...
