I personally put an Audio effect rack with two chains one one is for low and the other for the highs. I use Tal filter 2 to sidechain.

Whats your opinion about using an EQ with an automated low cut in combination with side chain compression on top of it?

So, as you said the release of the kick is lower in volume than its attack. Therefore, the bass should start popping up as the kick finishes. Which I guess means that bass and kick will play together at some point, at about lets say half their maximum volume. Doesn't that mean that there is a pretty big possibility of having phasing issues? This is what I've been trying to figure out lately.

Here's a question I've always had: Why don't you create a return track, sends only (not to master fader on the individual tracks), and group side-chain groups that are side-chained the same and put the side-chain compressor on the return tracks (groups) only? It would save some CPU allotment.

Don't take Zen's word too literal. You can still use sidechain as an effect ofcourse, just less people do it nowadays. Still happens alot in 1/4 tracks like Dubstep and Future Bass. :)

Shouldnt you set the compressor attack setting to the lowest (fastest) value to avoid kick & bass transients to clash? Great video BTW. Also, one of the side effects (no pun intended) of using sidechain instead envelope shapers is that you can not freeze sidechained tracks. Nothing to worry about if you have a decent computer though.

What I often see is that people use a "sidechain kick" track where the volume is set to -inf and the sample has pretty short duration or they use midi notes with some synth like operator to trigger sidechaint. What is you opinion about that ?

I sidechain with a utility and automations. All I do is make automation curves with the top at 0db on the utility and the lowest at -14db. That way I have more control and the kick is punchy but the bass is also thicc as fuck and right there. Also as the kick waves decrease in size the bass waves increase at a similar rate making the sound constant

Zen I got a real real question. There's this really big trap producer, Kenny Beats, who says that sidechain is horrible for trap/hip hop mixing, because it is making the bass (808) lose power. I don't really feel like that's always the case, when using a soft sidechain, but his opinion is also backed up by a really good mixing enigneer Alex Tumay, so I don't really know which way would be the best to mix those. I know you aren't a hip hop producer but maybe you have an opinion on this, thanks :)

+Luis Martinez I think he has a few and some where he implements music theory into the subject, but he talks a lot about music production and some about djing. His channel is a modern music production channel and since it focuses on that, it essentially expects that you already have the 'music' pieces going into it so that you can learn about how to produce the instruments and the song as a whole better. There are some theory videos, tho.

How else? You apply sidechain to the leads maybe and pads. But there isn't much more to it. There is frequency ducking which would be awesome but i have yet to find a plugin who offers it with sidechain maybe an idea for a plugin hmmmmhmhmhm

+Zen World create it by yourself. put a compressor and a multiband dynamics into 1 Channel and Group it. map multiband dynamics low/ mid x-freq to macro 1 and the mid/hi x-freq to macro 2. then duplicate the Chain inside the rack twice, so u have 3 Chains . Name the Chains low,mid,hi. In the low Chain, Solo the low Band on the multiband dynamics, in the mid chain solo the mid Band and in the Hi Chain Solo the Hi Band. There u have it. To prevent clicks from ducking, i always put the compressor first in every of the 3 explained chains!!!!
