I tried something similar with sound deadening for my Prius Prime and it didn't work well enough for me, I ended up disconnecting the speaker and sticking a resistor in place of it. Worked great! No more sound and no error message. I used this same trick for my VW e-Golf and the resistor worked with that car as well.

EASY FIX Start the car and while in park just tap the gas pedal just a LITTLE bit and the engine will kick in automatically and put it in reverse --when the engine is running it doesn't make the noise in reverse or forward. A little tip on those push pins that hold the radiator cover on. To remove them use the blunt end of a pen/pencil or a key and push down on the middle of the head of the pin. It will "pop" down and you just have to grab it and pull it out. As for "it's my vehicle I'll do what I want with it" that annoying noise was mandated as a required safety feature by the Government of the USA in 2019. " Softening the noise " a bit is one thing but IF you get in an accident and the insurance company sees that the system has been modified you MIGHT find yourself in a bit of a bind whether the insurance company will pay for the repairs. Worse yet you may find yourself in Court being sued for some ridiculous amount of money. The noise does suck though but people do turn their heads and look when I back up on electric motor alone.

Hey Alex...thanks for the. I will certainly do that next time I mess with it. Regarding The mandated safety feature, yes, I'm fully aware of that and the laws pertaining to that. I would really like an electrical mod for this sound emitter issue. One that gives you a switch or button on the inside of the car to be able to turn the sound on and off manually at any time, without triggering any dashboard errors. Or even reporting to Toyota. As it seems the car's health is constantly monitored remotely by Toyota to some extent. Of course I would probably keep the sound switched off 95% of the time. Switching it back on for service and inspections. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe an Arduino solution?
@jt2quick
@jt2quick 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah...That's a hard one there, partner. Unless you know or can trace the line to the source, you might have a good chance. Haven't seen any vids out there, but maybe someone will eventually come up with a kit for it. Maybe not worth the effort for someone to make then program the board for it.
@DocMicrowave
@DocMicrowave 2 жыл бұрын
@@jt2quick I am thinking about slicing into the line going into the Emitter, just a few inches behind it. Catching the signal at that point. Put in a dedicated Arduino or other such programmable micro controller there that would pass the signal through to the emitter during normal operation. But if you hit the "silence switch", the controller would cut the signal to the emitter, but keep a load (or signal) on the line to make the car's computer think the Emitter is still connected and operating. It all comes down to, what drives the emitter and how is it detected by the car. Either it is a digital signal of sorts (that would make things more difficult), or its just the presence of a resistive load.
@jt2quick
@jt2quick 2 жыл бұрын
@@DocMicrowave If you do try it, post it here. I'm curious myself. I didn't disable mine totally to not run into any "Legal issues". I'm content with the "sound level now". @DocMicrowave
@DocMicrowave 2 жыл бұрын
@@jt2quick Hmm, if a resistor didn't work (assuming he matched what ever resistance he was able to measure from the emitter), then you might be right. It may be a digital signal. Especially if we get into special status does, encryption, etc. But i will post if I discover anything.

@sometotalofallthings
@sometotalofallthings Жыл бұрын
This solution has drawbacks, and there is a better one available. First, sound proofing material only slightly lessens the noise level. Second, there may be times where you actually do want the factory volume like driving through a residential neighborhood with kids all around. A better solution is to install a wireless defeat switch. This keeps your Rav4 safer while allowing full noise cancellation for times when it makes sense, like backing out of your garage at 2 a.m. All it takes is a 12V wireless relay with a remote. This is connected in series with the red wire at the acoustic speaker to defeat the blaring choir of midnight angels. Anyone who can afford a Rav4 hybrid should be able to have this done professionally. This way you don't have to notify everyone in town, "hey we're gonna be gone over here!"

My RAV-4 also makes a noise when I’m slowing down, and it sounds like a distant police siren. Will this also turn that sound down? I’m hoping there’s only one speaker under there. That siren sound has scared me many times (even my passengers have mentioned it) and now I’m worried that I’m getting desensitized to REAL sirens! Honestly I think all these fake sounds are not helpful overall. I understand the logic but I think it creates unexpected negative consequences for people. I’ve had my good old silent Pius for 17 years and not one single accident or issue with being “too quiet.”
@jt2quick
@jt2quick Жыл бұрын
Hello Maggie.... when you say it sounds like a distant police siren. So the sound is NOT a groaning noise? but a wailing type noise? I'm trying to get an idea of it. And you mentioned that it happnes when you're slowing down. Only when you are slowing down? Not when you speed up, or turn corners? Does it start as soon as you STEP on the brakes? Does it subside when you take your foot of the brakes? Does it happen everytime? or only in the mornings or certain situations, like when you step on the brakes really hard? Send more details and I'll try to figure it out, keep in mind, I'm not a mechanic by any means. When you asked about whether this will turn that sound down.... well that is probably unlikely as that reduction in sound was for when the vehicle was backing up at a very slow speed. Did that "SOUND" you referred to come from the PWS (Pedestrian Warning System)? And is yours a regular Hybrid or a Prime. Ok...enough with the Spanish Inquisition.

I hope everyone considers the fact that this sound is required by law on all "quiet vehicles" in an effort to prevent 2,400 pedestrian injuries and deaths each year (at an estimated cost of $320 Million per year--or $133,333 per incident on average). This means your insurance company, should you have have such an incident after quieting this speaker is likely not going to cover your incident. Good luck! I'd like to see greater options as to the sound produced to meet this law, but built into this law is a "sameness" clause that prevents my vehicle from sounding any different than yours of the same make/model/trim. That's egregious in my opinion, but that's the law.

Looking left, right, front and back. I've learned that since I was 15 years old. The law is the law. Insurance is.....insurance. Reliability wise, can not beat Toyota and Rav4, overall is a good decision. Just FYI. Even if you did not chose the Rav4 but another hybrid or even an EV that noise will still be there. Do your best not to dwell too much on "ONE" negative, but look at all the positives: new vehicle, reliable, great on gas (especially these days), long marriage together driving in that brand new smelling car. God Bless and stay safe.

The sound is very annoying and get under my skin. There should be away you can choose the sound, for example, choose the sounds of a normal gasoline car backing.

Yes..I agree...but most likely not. Manufacturers will NOT....waste their time and money to incorporate something like that. They'll make it as simple as possible. It's all about the money. Been trying to look around here for some Auto Shop to install a Musical Horn on mine.... you know like pressing a selection to play "CHARGE" or some other special sound or music... no luck so far

Yeah..was thinking about that myself. Like modding a smartphone with a custom ROM... and hoping not to "Brick the Phone" in the process... that would totally suck. Maybe someone smart will come up something.

Yup...you're right about that. But it's quieter than not having it "Toned Down". After the first TWO months..that full blown noise was just taking its toll. Specially in the dead of night like 10pm. That noise can be heard a mile away it's so loud. And naturally everyone in the neighborhood knows....where it is coming from.

@@JimsEquipmentShed Hey Jim....I hear ya partner. I thought about that myself. I wanted the sound of a Maserati or a Porsche going down the road at a press of a button. But since I'm no electronics expert, I didn't want to jack up my PRIME. Saw a video on youtube, but it wasn't for the Prime, might experiment with it. Let me know if you have success as I might, might... give it a shot. The Prime is so quiet as at the beginning I would just exit the vehicle and as I close the door.... I'm reminded by an alarm that the PRIME is still ON. hahaha

Yes you are quite correct on that. Guess these days WE are relying way too much on technology to do our basic common sense on how to properly drive. Self-Driving cars, AI Robots, heck George Jetson is probably laughing at all of us right now wondering if WE will get run over by a Lawn mower or something. Anyways...that's basically why I mentioned it's up to each Individual to decide...what they want to do. Take care and Stay safe. JT

Drove a 2005 escape hybrid for 17 years before replacing it with the Prime this summer. It was the most quiet thing on the street when driving in EV mode. Never had any problems running over people because it was too quiet.. (Have never driven over anyone period!) Like one commenter said, I paided attention to the road and what was behind me.

@@DocMicrowavesame. If I had a choice between a swirly sound or an engine I would rather have the engine sound. Also I don’t buy on people getting run over because the car is too quiet. I think if you hit someone with your car you’d have a bigger issue than a quiet car being not seen lol maybe the person didn’t look if there’s a car coming or drunk driving or texting while walking/driving lol

Yup..you got that right Trev. Main reason I mentioned "NOT" to disconnect it. But instead to silence it somewhat. This way it can still be hear, but not as loud and whoever owns a RAV4 Prime will not get that error message permanently placed on their console. It's really up to each driver, no matter what vehicle they drive to "Look out and Be Aware"...of what is behind you when backing up. Whether they have a "Proximity Sensor", Back up horn alert, Dash warning sensors of what is on left or right of you or even cameras.....Each driver is responsible to make absolutely sure, there's nothing behind your vehicle that you might injure or damage.
