Toyota HYBRID reverse noise!? What is it? Full explanation!

If the sound is for safety reasons why wouldn't they place the speaker in the back of the vehicle? No one will be in harms way in front of the vehicle if the vehicle is backing up.

Great video, i just sent it to a customer of mine that I sold a Venza too a few weeks ago. He returned a few days later worried that the sound was something wrong with the vehicle. I had to turn on a few other Hybrid vehicles on the lot to assure him that sound wad normal.

I just test drove my very first Toyota Hybrid today, the 2023 Rav4 Hybrid Woodland Edition, and I was very baffled at this sound. I actually recorded it . Thanks for the explanation!!! The federal law mandates that a specific sound has to be emitted on all hybrid and EV vehicles that go forward from zero to 12 mph and also in reverse. Toyota happens to be the one that has this weird angel sound when all the others have a beeping sound and I think Toyota needs to switch it back to beeping like everyone else

Same here, I noticed that "singing" sound while I was driving forward at low speed, but not when I was high speed. If it's a safety feature, ok. I'll just turn the music up. The way I play music, I don't think pedestrians can fail to notice me. :)

My 2023 hybrid toyota that I got 2 days ago makes this sound in reverse and also, when driving forward under 25mph. A few hours ago I heard the same sound coming form under the front part of hood for at least 5 minutes after stopping the car ,taking the key out. For that reason it can not be the warning sound for pedestrians Since the engine wasn't even running it cant be the warning sound for pedestrians.. This sound today driving with very low speed on the highway was absolutely torturing. What is this sound? How can this be solved? Dealer said nothing is wrong with the car. Normal sounds. How can this loud constant, high pitched ,metallic noise be normal?

I hate it on my RAV4 XLE Hybrid 2022. It is WAY too loud and is litterally disturbing my neighbors when I come back home late. Any ICE vehicle is much quieter. Is there a way to at leat diminish it by say 50%? I had a 2012 Prius and it was quieter too,

Just measured the sound level and in front it is 86db. Experts recommend hearing protection whenever exposed to sounds above 85db. This level could frighten people who walk near the front of your car when backing out of a busy parking lot. What would be your liability if you scare an 80 year old and they fall and get injured??

I have a 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and love it (doesn't make this sound). My neighbor has a Prius and I can hear her backing out of her garage from inside my house. I know this is for idiots not paying attention, but I think that's on them. I'd like to see proof that people are more likely to get hit by a backing Hybrid vs a Gas car. There are youtube videos on wrapping the speaker in insulation foam and duct tape (requires removing/replacing clips and bolts). If you disconnect the speaker you will get a cockpit warning. Toyota needs to fix this. It's straightup noise pollution.

That is the only thing I hate about my Rav 4.That is why I park reverse that way I don't wake up the neighbors when I leave early in the morning. It is preferable to be annoying for 5 seconds in the afternoon than to wake up others from their much needed rest.

My neighbor just got one of these. It’s way to loud in reverse. It’s not necessary to be louder than a modified ICE exhaust system. In the car it seems pretty quiet but 250 feet away it’s obnoxious as heck.

Mazda uses a harp like chime and it is way more pleasant.

I have a 2014 Prius that sometimes makes a similar noise but I never realized it's only in reverse. I did see in the owner's manual that as a hybrid driver, you must be EXTREMELY careful arouns pedestrians because they may not hear you coming. Yeah, it's really that quiet. I still routinely get 50 MPG on the highway but I think I'm ready for a 2023 Rav-4 Hybrid, when it comes out. I need AWD because the only real downside of my car now is 99 HP - which translates to being nearly impossible to drive in the snow. *Edit It makes the sound going forward, also.
