Happy I can help. Yes, this way of practicing is a MUST to really nail a song intonation wise.

Thank you, im the 80% out of tune situation and have been slowly coming to this idea of working out the notes, ive started by writing the lyrics down and writing the exact note over the vowels in the words so i can see exactly where they are, which also I discovered helps you see exactly how many beats are in a word (equivalent to how many syllables), then you get an idea of how many notes are supposed to be there.
@gwynbleidd5171 Жыл бұрын
Hello, I have a question about your method, as I've been trying to apply it myself. How do you know which note goes over each line in a song. Is it just by listening to the singer?
@altpropaganda7293 Жыл бұрын
@@gwynbleidd5171 It’s really rough and rudimentary at this point. The first thing I attempt to do is find the key (way easier said then done) sometimes google has the right info, most of the time there is 2-3 different answers per song. Why? Idk its frustrating. Once you know the key of the song, then you can listen for the notes, I use a piano app for that part and just sit and work it out, you have set notes you need to work with so it narrows your options down. Exp. A minor has A B C D E F G then it starts all over again. Thats an easier key because there are no sharps or flats. I’ve also found that a song may incorporate a note thats in that key below or above exp. G A B C D E F A B C, basically the keys just repeat themselves until you run out of notes. There are also different modes and nonsense that make things even more ridiculous but for the most part you can figure it out by ear. As far as what my notes look like ill leave an example below, ill use A minor but Im just going to put random notes from that key over the lyrics just so you can see visually what I do, it wont sound good/correct if played on a piano app lol. C C D C-C C “Oh life is bigger, Its D-C B C C bigger then you and D C B A you are not me….” You can try the notes on a piano app but it may sound off a bit cuz I just winged it, especially if you know the song. Thats an easier song, I came across one recently that has a run of notes over one word thats more difficult exp. E-D-C-A-D “Pool” I used A minor again as my key and notes are random but hopefully the idea come across ok. The big thing is you sing on vowels so thats why ive placed emphasis in vowels plus any runs you do will be on the vowels but there extended.

Don't let that discouraging emoji make you feel bad, most musicians develop an ear for knowing the notes and how they work together in intervals to create melodies and arpeggios, the same goes for vocals, but your voice is the instrument. It's something you'll have to learn as you go, try and run vocal scales along with a recording and try and match the notes, if you still have trouble buy a tuner and work on holding notes and then making intervals from one note to another. Don't let anyone bring you down, see you in hollywood Freddie Mercury.

So, what happens when someones brain hears the note, then in the translation from hearing it in thier head to producing the sound with thier own voice it becomes out of tune? ...also, the song you're singing here has one note that's sung over a three chord progression that makes it sound like it's a different note when it's not. You're missing out that middle chord here. Have a listen to the version by Anne Murray. It might help.

The notes that give me the hardest time are those not part of the chords. For instance E when playing the B-Chord. Is it what you mean by "the in-between notes"?
@simonjones34567 жыл бұрын
One thing I try is playing the track and singing along with it to make sure every note is right.
@DavidDiMuzioLessons7 жыл бұрын
+Simon Jones I don't find that nearly as helpful. There are songs I've sung along to for years and always sung some wrong notes. Only when I went to record the song in a studio and have a producer point it out did ai realize. The notes where in the key ...my ear just tricked me into hearing the note a half step lower or higher. Just singing along won't really lock a melody in all the time. You have to go through and really hammer out the individual notes.
@simonjones34567 жыл бұрын
I guess through practice we can become familiar with our own way of singing something which might be different to the original. Does it matter if the song is sung overall in a lower octave? Famous singers do this for live shows? As long as the notes are consistently relative to each other with no variations, it will still stay in tune.

I think there are other reasons for being out of tune. For example, a lack of control over your voice. I can't reliably "order" my voice to produce the note that I want especially at speed. To fix it I think i need to nail scale and scale variant exercises. So all the major scales and then things like 1,3,5,8 or 1,3,5,8,10,12,11,9, 7,5,4,2,1. Etc. Currently in personally still stuck on 5 note major scales :-(

Hey, I have seen some few videos by you, and I realized that you got some skills hahaha. When I sing, my voice can't reach higher because of range and pitch. Because of this reason I often crack. However, when I watched this video, maybe I can't sing in tune? I have tried to sing a song with instrumental, also like karaoke. Although, I am a vietnamese and I am practicing my home language song called Cause I Love You. You may not understand the language, but I believe that you know how to teach me, how it works and how I should practice? This may sound creepy, but I've heard that you got a personal lesson on Skype? It would be awesome if you had 5 minutes free.

Thanks Dave, I do isolate notes and practice runs - recording and playing them back, but I was also switching keys depending on time of day and energy level (with mixed results) - so I see the point of learning in a single consistent key.

I like your videos , but I feel like this one isn't not very helpful for people in my situation, because your skipping over how to actually find the notes. Assuming I can't sing in key because I don't know what the melody notes are makes sense. If you played the notes one at a time on the guitar or piano I can match them with my voice, but put me in front of the guitar and turn the song on, I'd be lost as how to begin to find the notes of the melody. I could sit and noodle around the notes of the key/scale for hours and not be able to figure it out. I'll try it and think I have it right, then my wife(music Teacher) will come in the room and be like "you are way off here is what it should be" I feel like you should give some help to those of us who aren't good at picking out music by ear. Appreciate the videos you do.

oh my gosh. it must be embarassing when your wife schools you lol. i know the feels.
@buskerbuddy21085 жыл бұрын
@@kojik4271 The right key to sing a song in is the key that is your natural voice. For example, you could sing an easy song like twinkle twinkle little star in the key of C and hit all the melody notes but still not sound good or you could sing the same song in the C sharp key still hit all the notes but it still may not sound a feel good but when you sing the same song in the key of D or D sharp you may sound and feel great. Bringing the music key of the guitar up or down to match your voice can make a big difference. Most people struggle and strain to try and bring their voice higher or lower to match the music key. Doing this can in the long-term damage your vocal cords if the song is totally the wrong key for your voice. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4mkf3unr9l0jJI
