Chris Daughtry's sense of melody combined with his energetic and even keeled delivery creates an energy that truly unique... yet somehow familiar. He's got a great range, but it's not flaunted. His tone is warm and inviting, but he's still able to be "in your face" and authoritative. Let's study Daughtry's approach using several cherry-picked studio excerpts and learn how to put some of what he does into our own voices!

5:00 I notice he does always pronounce ME as MAY in his songs, even today. You don't realize it at first but then one day it hits you. That's how smooth he is I suppose, it works for him.

Nice! Some years ago I was kinda obsessed with Daughtry's voice, I learnt a lot of his songs, I was especially into the album "Baptised". He's still one of my favourites. To me one of his distinctive traits is exactly what you mentioned, the percussiveness and rhythm he puts in his phrasing, he's very "groovy".

Cool! I might have to check out his stuff now, never been a huge fan from what I’ve heard... but I liked the lines you analyzed. I’ve requested him before but I’m going to again, cause I’ve really been digging his voice and music lots recently; Jay Buchanan! Such a versatile, dynamic and powerfully soulful singer!

Dude I hate his genre/style of music but his voice is fucking insane. IMO he is easily top ten rock vocalists of all time which is fucking insane. On the level of talent that Layne Staley had, different style but his power and range is awesome. He’s criminally underrated.

I would be very interested in a video on vocalists with strong character to their voice. The likes of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, who both had very unique approaches to singing. While not the most technical of singers, they both were able to use their voice in expressive unconventional ways. It highlights an important mindset for singers to have, and that is to being open to exploring their own voice with confidence, and to be as expressive as they can.

Awesome....I would see you break down Toni Cornell voice. I’m sure you seen the video of her covering her dad song hunger strike. She has a very powerful voice for someone who is only 15 IMO. She also has a original single out on iTunes I believe it was recorded with her dad when she 11? Not sure.

I know this is probably a bit of a weird request, but I think it'd be awesome if you analyzed Nick Cave. On one hand, he's quite melodic when he wants to be, and on the other he REALLY leans into his natural baritone a lot. I'd like to see you break it down on a song of his like Oh My Lord or Brompton Oratory.

Hey Chris thank you for this vid, i’ve been waiting for this ! I am also following your 12 week program (currently week 4). Two questions: 1) regarding Daughtry’s choruses, his high notes, is he using his head voice ? It’s really powerful and it feels like if it isn’t, is he fooling us with lots of compression? 2) also regarding his choruses (mainly 1st two albums) what kind of harmonies is he pulling? It seems like he is doubling his voice on the same pitch and that there are other voices behind? Or is it just production ? Because it sound really wide, very similar to nickelback i find. Would be great if you could analyse Adam Gontier from Three Days Grace & Saint Asonia. Love those tutorial!! Thanks in advance! Alex

6:12 i kinda sound a bit like this, but i know my breath control is good, because i do false cord vocals, yet when i try to use clean chest voice, it sorta sounds like a wannabe elvis/patrick star ;-; my mouth is small and my neck is big, so im probably a tenor or baritone, so when i try to make any note, i sound like that. i may be asking for something impossible because im a octave or more lower than daughtry, so this is probably a impossible favor, but does anyone have advice?

Hey Chris, I've had an issue that maybe you can help me out with (maybe a video idea too?). When I'm trying to reach high notes in aggressive singning/screaming, I get light headed. Either one of two things happen: I feel like I'm about to faint, or I get a huge headache for a few seconds, like there's a lot of blood pumping back into my head. It's really annoying and I feel like I might hurt myself like this. I couldn't find much information on the internet about this issue, just one video from a vocal coach but discussing a different type of singing (here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jajQnoyAhceDsM0 ). Huge fan of your videos, thanks in advance!
