@@cyborg5777, chest voice is called that because your chest is vibrating -- like when you talk. Put your hand on your chest and sing. If you feel something, it's your chest. If you don't, it's your head voice. Also, if you put your hand behind your head while singing in head voice, just above the neck, you'll feel vibration, hence the term head voice. A mix you you can feel in both. And right in your cheekbones. Mix voice combines both registers to make the transition between the two smoother and more uniform. Instead of extending your chest voice all the way up into your headspace, or trying to lower your head voice, you are dividing the sound between the two registers, creating a third.

As a soprano with a traditionally 'sweet' sounding voice, my middle register has always been the bane of my existence, and the reason why I developed and use my chest voice so much. It's great to have practical applications on how to strengthen that middle ground. Great video Evynne! Thanks!

Speaking of getting to know your voice, what about doing a video that can serve as a sort of self-evaluation of one's voice? Knowing the upper and lower limits, where the breaks are, how big the breaks are, and so on.

i think you figured by now but if not i give it a shot. try to watch the other tutorials before watching this one (its pretty advanced). At first work on belting and finding your head voice. It is good to note that your Headvoice can pretty easily mixed with your falsetto but an easy way to know which one is which is trying to go low. Your falsetto stops at your break point for chest voice whereas your head voice goes beyond. After that start on strengthening your head and chest voice as well as your belting until you have an overlap of at least half an octave you can hit with comfort. After that this tutorial gets interesting because after you have these voices you want to connect them. The thing about feeling the voice behind the nose is done by lifting the (i think its called soft palate). you can find that in another tutorial. A tip for that: It helped me a lot just standing in front of a mirror and practicing. just like learning on how to wiggle your ears. And another tip is: if you're not relaxed dont try it. Everything you do is far better with a relaxed voice.

I am a guy and I do not currently coach voices but I am a choir director. Women struggle more with singing in their chest voice than men. People all have different voice types and some have more challenges. If you find it hard to sing in chest voice, your voice type probably tends to resist an in-between sound so it feels like you either make the best with head voice or would have to scream not sing to hit a chest note, and strong mixed voice is missing. But it is a placement thing, you need to adjust your placement to overcome these resistant spaces of your voice type and find your chest voice. Start in low range and strengthen it and then you will find the chest range begins to expand because your voice technique and dynamics "learn" how to handle your vocal space and find the hidden previously freedom in your range. Jiji and Allison, I believe this applies to you, especially if you are a soprano or light/lyric alto? KZbin Addict, Chynna and Sylba, I imagine you are low altos (contraltos)? There is nothing wrong with that. There are many contraltos that often sing in the tenor section. You can always build the more resisted parts of your range with good practice, and believe me it is there even if it doesn't seem to exist right now. You probably would have a powerful strong mixed voice and rich head voice too that once you find and develop will allow you to continue singing in modal voice to higher notes that flow well with your chest voice and sound good. Good luck!

Thank you these types of videos are very helpful to me as a classically trained spinto soprano it has been difficult for me in the past to do low notes. And so, having to learn how to use my chest voice and mixed voice is been crucial to me and especially for hitting high notes properly through belting and through my mask. A lot to learn but if you want to sing like a Disney Princess these techniques are so important. I really loved your video where you showed you changing your voice for all the Disney princesses that was VERY impressive and most people (I think including myself) probably cannot even sounds close to that.

Hi Evynne. Just discovered your site and I've subscribed. I absolutely LOVE your attitude. All of this vid made full sense to me because I have been "tutored" via another site since July 2017. I could not even breathe properly before that believe it or not. I did a note range test early on and found out I was Mezzo Soprano but both my upper and lower registers have extended now, my upper one more extensively. My high voice is stronger than my lower voice so I have been working on that. I sing mostly Musical Theatre and can hit the high notes now in the Phantom songs, also the ones in Les Mis. I shall definitely keep tuned to your channel now. Singing is a bit of an obsession with me now - I hope that is not a bad thing. As well as vocal warm ups, I do the tongue route warm up and upper body (neck, arm and shoulder warm ups). Thank you so much for taking time to pass on your expertise. Kind regards.

This middle register lesson has helped a LOT because I'm singing "What Child is This?" at my church on the 20th, and the version I'm singing is right on my middle register (I would have preferred them to choose a higher version because I'm a strict soprano, but it's fine).

I know this is an old video but I've just had the biggest epiphany of my singing career. In the choirs I've been a part of (amateur mostly) I've rarely had the chance to go anywhere below a high soprano. I have a really strong head voice, and mediocre but decent chest voice. However whenever I had to pass the two I would always break and get weak in the transition. I don't know how this has eluded me for so long... You've saved my singing in the choir I'm currently in and am getting the opportunity for solo singing now because of this. Thank you so much!

This was really helpful. Little details about how to do this. Differenciating between upper and lower VOICE, and directing the voice to the cheeks/frontal part of the face through the nose instead of the head, was an extremely imp top to actually know how and what to do. Thanks a lot!!! 😊😊 Been struggling with it for so long.

You always do awesome voice lessons! But I would love to have Peter demonstrate mixed voice. I feel like being a male listening to a female voice makes it difficult to grasp the concept.

@EvynneHollins, thanks for this video. The theory explanation and the exercises seem good. I've got to say, when you are demonstrating the chest vs. head vs. mixed voices, I cannot hear the differences. When I do those, it's very very pronounced!
