Steph, You spend a long time developing a strong chest voice, and learning diaphragmatic support, and eventually glottal compression. Many females do not have a well-developed chest voice, and this may even be true in their speaking voices. Developing your chest voice will help you to grow and strengthen your voice. It took me 20 years to finally figure this out. I always knew there was a ‘proper’ quieter scream but always thought it was related to vocal fry. This is similar but uses the upper cords so you can squeeze like bloody murder but totally without irritation. I’ve only been doing it for two days but it’s so cool. I’m not a vocal teacher or selling vocal training - I’m just excited!

One of the best pieces of advice a person can get when attempting to sing is not to be self conscious of the faces they make and how they look. I noticed a lot of people who sing really low without hardly any expression on their face is people who just are afraid they will look funny so they try to minimize how much they move their face. Embarrassment is a beginning singers worst enemy.

Ok I have been addicted the last month listening to Ken Tamplins videos, at first I seen it on a comedy show, then I started getting adds on youtube,, next thing I know I am searching this guy out like like he has buried treasure and I can get some lol,,, but I am going to admit,, I started off watching it for the purpose of seeing how many different ranges and pitches and styles this guy can do,,, I cant find the end of this guys abilities,, Soooo Im just going to admit it ,, Ken might be one of my heros,, ok ,, There I said it! How the heck does one man sing this many styles and even do legendary songs and MAKE THEM BETTER,, seriously this guy is not native to planet earth,, I keep waiting for him to go super sayin 3 in the middle of a song, and if Ken sees this comment please do a Guns and roses song, I would love to hear you do the song Estranged , or November rain! and your students are all really good to,, Ok Im signing up! I cant take it any more lol

Everytime I try to sing distorted my throat hurts afterwards. How you do this without losing your voice is beyond me. Maybe singing this rough isn't possible for everyone.

It’s possible for everyone as I have debunked that theory. I told myself the same exact thing for 7 years but then I was able to sing with rasp and eventually do metal screams. It’s all about time and commitment. Actually, babies have raspy voices because of their first screams and cries when being born. That means every single person can indeed do it.

I'm a singer & former singer for metal bands (thrash,death & black metal) I do sing clean vocak either for "softer metal" and non metal song..but I glad to tell you that at first I've used to sing distorted & growling version but it's affecting my vocal,I lost my voice constantly it's mean I can't sing (clean vocal) for a straight hours afterwards..I have to wait for a cool down in order to heal my voice..soon after I've discovered mixed voice (learned from yours) I find that my vocal wasn't affected anymore when I sing distorted & growling instead,it's open the passageway for my vocal to reach higher and higher and does it's mean if we achieved all of 3 major vocal,we can do anything afterwards..??..btw thanks to you Ken,glad to have you as my online vocal guru,glad you've been here,you're the best..!!!!!.. UPDATED: I've learnt growling & distorted before I learnt all 3 major vocal (chest,mixed & head)

Be careful, Matt. Those distortions can really tear up your voice if they aren't done right!

English isn't my first language and I may screw it up, sorry in advance. I've been pushing my voice straight away after a short warm up until I found your training videos. And yes you're right. I lost my clean high notes and even falsetto was wonky. After I watched this video, I stopped singing and talking for a week. Until now I did what you said. Now my distorted vocals are getting even stronger and cleans are well... clean. :D Thanks man.
