Every time I hear a kid singing out loud while they walk or ride by our house I always get that nice warming feeling of how I used to just sing, sing, sing whenever I was alone (or with a band of course) in my teens and it makes me so happy to see that kids these days do exactly the same and just don’t mind what others think of them until they see you and they stop singing from being a little shy after all. So whenever they stop because of seeing me I always encourage them to keep singing because “it sounds nice” or “I love what you’re doing” or “Let it out and be free - it’s the best way to become the best” or stuff like that.. Today when I hear them singing and they then see me they do give a tiny smile away and perhaps a little laugh, but they do try to keep singing all the way down the road. So know that you might think that others find you being a lunatic, but we we/they just might actually admire you and enjoy that you are getting better and better with time - unfortunately sometimes in silence! - Rock on! BTW: My neighbors always turn down their radios whenever I practice or record (singing or an instrument)... they say - it’s way better and more interesting than what is on the radio - so I’m not the only one giving encouragement to others! 👍

I was always so shy about singing. Always choked during semi-professional recording sessions. Finally becoming okay with singing without a guitar in my hands or a band behind me at the age of 27. I wish I'd dealt with my anxiety earlier, there are a lot of missed opportunities there. I'll try to remember to encourage anyone I hear singing in public from now on.

I REALLY like how he pointed out the case with ladies. I honestly could NOT agree more (that is, based on my experience). I've REALLY been struggling with this. I have a naturally raspy voice anyway, but when I go into the high notes, like, A4 onwards, this sort of fear takes over of whether ill sound pitchy, and so I end up losing that rasp and sort of husk, and it just sounds very head voicey and breathy. Thank you SO MUCH KEN, for pointing out something that I have not seen almost ANY other vocal coach out there point out. I'm feeling a lot more confident; I guess I'll prioritize the support and the strength of the higher register first, and then work on pitch. Again, Ken , i honestly can't thank you enough for clearing up a question I've been having for YEARS now!

Just stumbled upon your channel in the last couple days. Blown away. My voice is naturally pitched really similar to you. I too have expanded my depth, finesse, and range over my life singing. I dig that you teach correct ways to do things Bel Cantos consider no no. I like head voice cause there's nothing false about it, a term I never heard as a young singer. I spent a long time crushed in my baritone box even after figuring out for myself how to sing like Geddy Lee when I was 16. Too much tension, so I lost that in my 20's and 30's, been getting it back with grace and power learning how to build it on my big belly breath. Thanks again for sharing your channel. I been doing all these things, learning bird song too. Then comes you, illuminating greater awareness of what I naturally sense. Had I a teacher like you when I was 16, maybe it wouldn't have taken so long to get back into my full range.

I started using everything I learned from you, And when I got to Open Arms, a girl started fighting back tears. Everyone exploded with compliments And asked if I did this before? Thank you SO much for the great belting tips and exercises! I have a vocal performance degree as a classically trained soprano, but for the life of me I've always had such a hard time finding my "belting" voice- I switch so quickly to my head voice as soon as it gets too high for my chest voice. Turns out I've sacrificed it at the altar of the high note..! I'm working on becoming more stylistically flexible as I want to sing more pop/musical theater styles. Thanks again- you really know your stuff!!

As a musician myself, albeit of a different variety (french horn), when you said that some people say to avoid practicing scales, I kinda chuckled. The scales are like the foundation of any piece of music whether you be an instrumentalist or a vocalist. One of my old band directors used to say "There are no such thing as hard scales, just unfamiliar ones." and that's true. The exercises and practices in any form of music are there to help build up that basic muscle memory and habits that make a musician good. Any really great, professional musician I can almost guarantee you practice scales and things like etudes daily and run through the basic practices. Now, it's a bit different for brass instruments since we don't have to worry about wearing out our vocal chords and needing to let them rest. Really, the focus is more on the embouchure (mouth muscles) and if you play with good technique, you really don't have to worry about wearing it out. Of course, it's not good to play all day.

I’ve been in a choir since age 7. I’ve learned how to sing soft and in unison with the others. Now (at age 18) I have a Jazz/Pop/Rock vocal teacher and I’m discovering so many different layers of my voice! It’s great and I’ve made so much progress in the last year! But I have a problem with taking my chest/mixed voice higher, I’m just not used to it. I hope it’s not too late to learn how to do that. At some point it feels like I’m Kermit and choking. So that’s why I’m here. I’ll definitely try these tips (not that my teacher isn’t enough, she’s great! but I feel like it’s research or homework that I’m doing), the shouting one is a really good start! I’ve never thought of it like that. So thank you I guess for all the videos on this topic, I’ll check out some more! I‘m also apologizing for any grammar mistakes, I’m not english.

Please allow me to talk about my first impression about this video. Your speaking voice is so beautiful, I thought you must be from the choir but somehow look like a Rocker. After 2 mins, I start to think why this guy talk a lot, not like the other videos on the internet, they will give exercise very quick. However because you say you are the King of Belting and your voice sounds very beautiful, I keep watching, when you grab the guitar I thought you are gonna start singing or exercise. But you didn't until 3 minutes later, LOL. But once you start the exercises and demos, I was surprised! It is really easy to do it by following your guide and I enjoy to hear your voice either you're singing or talking. Thank you for your free lesson to let me learn 'bout belting. I was using it but didn't know. Your explanation helps me to do it in the right way and sounds better. Every second I watched this video is worthy, the similes are necessary. I thought having a really deep baritone voice was a curse, but this stuff here helps me hit notes in a higher register without killing my voice. After years of singing and playing, I'm basically relearning how to sing all over again. My problem is my guitar's body against my diaphragm seems to cut my voice short. I feel like i'm at a crossroads of guitar or vocals only, but i can't choose. If i lower the guitar strap, i can't play as well, but if i raise it to where i can play, i can't sing properly from the weight. It's a dilemma I've been battling for years. I wish i could find a happy medium so i can sing and play. This is probably a lot of lead singers don't plat instruments while singing and performing.

Thank you so much Ken! So I started working on my singing in February this year, I'm doing it basically on my own and these videos helped me a lot (I'd buy the course if I could but I can't right now). I'm aware that there's no one controlling what I'm doing so I'm very careful of course. I'm much more confident now and I can belt out about half an octave higher then I could, and I'm controlling my highest notes a lot better, and my voice stopped cracking. I know you can't master singing if you never had an actual singing class (I only sing in a choir) but you sir are amazing, no one before ever told me that for example you know maybe I should open that throat so it doesn't hurt and I don't end up not being able to sing at all you know? I'm looking forward to finding a coach in future, if not you then someone else who knows what they're doing, but until now, I'll just keep on practising... and not trying to do things I'm not sure I know how to do properly.

You may find, as many others have, that doing my home course, along with guidance from the students areas of my singers forums is the best of both worlds. You move at your own pace, yet have interactive feedback on how you, as an individual, are doing. Most universities have shifted over from brick-and-mortar buildings to online degrees. You get access to world-class teaching, without having to travel or pay for remote housing and meals, and have guidance when you need it. No other coach has the information or knowledge that I have from my personal experiences and training.

I'm not saying I go into everything with little to no effort... but it seems I'm a natural to some sports and some I'm not.. but when it comes to singing it seems I have a natural ability to sing.. now I have smoked and haven't taken care of my vocal chords at all but during karaoke nights from when sober to getting a buzz at this bar the bartender didn't drink at all but he says I have a natural ability to sing and that I should focus on it.. but I'm a lifetime cook.. and will always cook.. but continuously get told I should try out for some singing shows.. I've thought about posting videos of me at either karaoke or just at home and singing acapella

My goal for the next 2 months is to buy your Singing Program. I wish I can buy it faster, but budget is tight for the next few weeks. I have this burning passion for singing, but I really don't have the techniques to execute it well enough. I'm starting to think that maybe improvement is a possibility if I took your course. You're really inspiring Ken.

A lot of singers, especially blues singers, rasp on certain accent syllables. How do they do that? Or Linda Ronstadt on It's so easy to FALL in love. The word FALL is rasped.

Like your videos, you give examples right away not like other ones who give explanations and no examples until the end at about 1 or 2 minutes. This people dont show their work like you do. That's what makes you awesome coach and mentor....domo arigato for your videos.

I think you're right, Anton. No sense in piecemealing your voice. Do it as a whole. Build the foundation solid as a rock and then keep going.

Hi Ken, I've got a question. I try to difference between twang and belt. What I know is that twang has two variants oral twang and nasal twang and the resonance in the first is in the teeth and in the second in the nose.... And It seems to me that belting is like a louder variation of oral twang... Could you clear me this question? Thanks Ken you give so much help with your videos already.

Wow!! You certainly are amongst the best of any teachers I've had the pleasure to work with!❣ I can finally comprehend a technique; And... I'm watching every free video you have posted on YT yet... I'm still compelled to start your monthly program; [not that this stuff wasn't enough]... but, that I wanna see what else I might have missed. 😁 You Ken, are the real deal! ...Who could possibly challenge your techniques with anything more understandable? 👀👁😆 I'm all ears...🤣
