Why is it that some vocal performances move us more than others do? In this video, I talk about how we can prevent ourselves from giving a flat, 2D performance that is technically solid, but fails to move the audience emotionally.

So interesting that you’re Method - just that it seems unusual for someone so fluent with the science of singing to go so deep into the emotional aspects. And yes, of course, it would be great if you’d make a video sharing your deeper technique. Thank you so much!

When we're performing, we need to turn off our brains and sing with our hearts. That's not always easy for some of us to do, but it's the only way to really move the audience. When I'm listening to music that makes me cry, etc., it's definitely not my analytical, science minded brain that is being moved. :)

Yes, technique should ALWAYS be used in the service of the fullest expression of the heart. Certainly technique is critical to remove obstacles to that expression but technique as an end in itself is not music. I remember as a young Berklee College of Music student I admittedly spent a lot of time working on my technique (my main instrument was piano at that time) but it was such a joy when technique was just a given and the music and heart was able to just flow out effortlessly, which was the ultimate goal!

Yes, technique is just the tool that helps us express ourselves how we want to, rather than how we have to.

I guess for me, if a person is singing off pitch (more than once in a song), I don't care how emotional they are I still find it irritating. Maybe I have perfect pitch, don't know. I agree that there has to be some emotion while singing though. I love Simone Kermes, German Soprano artist. She sings baroque music and she gets the pitch spot on and sing with a lot of emotion and character. My favorite. In my case, I can't emote anything more than comic relief. Singing a serious song is very uncomfortable to me. I don't like sharing any emotion with anyone.

Sharing emotion requires tremendous vulnerability! I agree that multiple pitch errors and other 'bad singing' can be distracting. But look at Kelly Clarkson's performance (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqbYn6Scmd9mbpo). She lost control and let her emotion get the better of her, but she had the audience in tears. That's what I'm talking about. It wasn't a technically 'bad' performance, per se, even though she couldn't get the words out at one point. Losing it like that is usually considered a no-no, but she pulled it off.

Yes I remember watching that performance. Kelly is usually on pitch so in her case I can let that slide. I agree in that I keep my guard up. Don't like feeling vulnerable. It was opening up in my early 20's and the ridicule that kept me from singing for 25 years.

It's so hard. I'm someone who has always been so self-conscious and I find it hard to be completely vulnerable on stage.... unless I'm leading worship or acting. But singing my own songs or covers? I just want to remain guarded to protect myself and stay very much inside my head.

What is even more amusing is that when I do sing at karaoke, everyone claims that I get a lot of applause. Frankly I don't even hear it.

It's very hard to add emotion when you're not secure in your technique. People like us literally do need to be taught how to sing with emotion.
