You really gotta be able to hit the notes clean and easy first. Distortion and rasp are an effect. You're probably straining as you ascend in range. You gotta work up to the high stuff in order to have a strain free, powerful tone.

That is a good question!..lot of different scream fx going on there. Take this with a grain of salt, but I would say the slipknot style scream..I'm assuming your larynx is pretty low for the gutterel, is kind of throwing a wrench in your style. The A7X scream would be more of a neutral/raised larynx position. Sometimes you can get stuck in that low larynx configuration. Also, I would ALWAYS warmup before doing anything in this style...or before singing in general.

How quiet is it? Distortion and rasp really aren't that loud. If I do a distorted note, it's actually a bit quitter than my clean notes. If I want it louder, I just engage my lower abs more to support it.
@1BadSavage10 жыл бұрын
If you have tickeling or discomfort its normal if you are trying something new...grit /growlscomes from your vocal chords but from a different area.growls and grit will always feel strange or hurt if you just started..if it hurts you are just pushing to hard as a beginer.use normal speaking volume and build your way up. In a couple days you will already notice improvement.also knowing your limits comes from pushing yourself a little...its not always bad to git ive your all...it builds power.many techniques are out there...try them all and dont be discouraged. Real growth comes from emotional content and visualization. If you can see it/hear it in your mind you will break ground
@NIIVES12 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial mate! I have one question though. Your speaking voice is a bit lower than mine, yet when you sing in ''mid range'' as you said which feels and sounds comfortable/easy, my voice is already getting near the ''high range'' so it loses power and it's a bit more mickeymouse-like (kind of, you know what i mean). Is there a way I could possibly ever sound like for example Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Corey Taylor of Stone Sour, Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis or Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters?

Derek, how do you transition from singing clean to raspy scream/sing? the best example I have right now is David (disturbed) in the sound of silence during the bridge. he sings real clean but occasionally adds growl to his voice as he goes. I can't figure out if I'm supposed to get louder or closer to the mic either lol

Muscle memory can be a bad thing sometimes. If you're doing it incorrectly, you'll eventually adapt to it, but in the long term, can still damage your voice. You have a recording or anything? I can prob tell you pretty quick if you're doing it right or not.

well, actually, and this was self taught, i spent quite the time figuring out how to do the slipknot scream without hurting myself. ended up figuring out a way to do the scream while using falseto and later on head voice register and adding distortion on it, so im doing the oposite of lowering the larynx while achieving the same result, i use mostly movement in soft palate, and glotal compression... anyways, thanks, and hope to see more vids man

Hi Derek! I'm looking for a different kind of grit.. It sounds somewhat like the one you're using in this video, but with a less frequent rasp (like when you're inhaling a vocal fry) and more like a gargling sound. Westernhagen uses it regularly, e.g. in "Sexy" (watch?v=B5yqaGBEyKU). Any idea how to produce it or what this technique is called? Do you know more singers who use it?

Oh i didnt think you'd answer me. sorry bout the caps.But the vocal fry im talking about is from the vocal cords? If I use the fry technique and sing loud its definitively not the roof of my mouth or the back of my throat. I can use your technique and just get sound from my mouth.( At least i think its the same. Do you feel vibration all the way to your noes when you do it?)I dont hav a cool speaking voice.i gotta get some tone lol. Im really a lead guitarist but r singer left the band so yea

If you're getting near the top of your range, you need to exercise your mid-voice more. Octave sirens on a "ah" vowel really help. As far as how your voice sounds, it's your voice, that's what makes everyone unique. Eddie and Corey are baritones, if your vocal timbre is more of a tenors, it would be hard to sound like them. It is possible to sing in the same style though. I wanted to sound like Chris Cornell for years, I don't, but I learned how to sing in his style. Hope that helped a bit.
@MarkWalkerMusic11 жыл бұрын
Cool demonstration. I think another good example of the soft rasp is Peter Gabriel.
@DerekReno12 жыл бұрын
Your throat shouldn't hurt...meaning that there should be no discomfort whatsoever. If you're getting hoarse afterwards, you are doing something wrong and could lead to nodules on your vocal cords. For rasp, you're just using a tiny bit more air than you would normally. Grit, you're actually cutting back the amount of air you're using. The entire roof of your mouth should vibrate if you do it right. Hope that helped..
@hadoukengad610911 жыл бұрын
now do you think this is because i am not warming up? or is it just using so many different parts of my throat and palate? its pretty interesting and i thought i should ask

I'm a girl and I want to learn how to sing rock. I'm a soprano, not a mezzo, but is it still possible to learn how to sing with rasp and grit? Another question, opera has always been easy for me, like my voice is naturally made for that, but people have told me I have to choose: either I get the operatic sound or the raspy sound, no singer can use both. What do you know about it?

hey man, so im in a band and im good with singing screaming and rasp ( m.shadows style).... but my question is, in my band i use three different screams - corey taylor (iowa) kindof -rasp like m shadows high pitched screams -clean vocals. now this combination is really hard and its take me a couple of years to nail, BUT, theres still something im missing... there are moments where its easier to nail the guttural taulor screams and not the high pitched, and sometimes my rasp cant meld ( continue

You could most definitely sing rock. A lot of bel canto technique is applied to rock..breathing, placement, and proper use of your resonance chambers. Thing with rock is, you have to hold back a bit, and not belt things out like you would in opera. A lot of rock "effects", screaming, grit, rasp, are all fairly quiet and at a speech level. You can turn grit on and off once you get it right. I wouldn't recommend singing in a rock band, and then sing an aria the next night though :)

When you and everybody else say "the throat hurts" what do you actually mean? If i use my full grit for, let's say...singing ace of spades 5 or 6 times i get kind of hoarse...does that count as hurting? When i do it some other way...with a lot of air...it stings my throat but using it normally it doesn't. I'm confused because i feel something vibrating really really hard and i don't know if those are the vocal chords or my uvula. If those were my vocal chords i guess it should of hurt a lot no?

Give me a 3DG song you want to learn how to do. I know them, but not that familiar with their material. If I'm not mistaken, he uses a lot of distortion in his voice? My advice also would be to work on your normal singing voice. Distortion and rasp are all "effects". If the foundation isn't there yet, you're gonna have a tough time. I'd recommend being able to sing up to a G above middle C (G4) comfortably, before you try these techniques.
