Hi.. I need your advice on helmet sizing.. my old Arai (SZ RAM) was size M, everything was fine. Have been using it close to 6years. Recently changed to VZ RAM. The shop owner measured my head circumference to be more suitable for size S (55cm), and they even changed the cheek pad for me (from 25 to 15), but after trying it on for about 5-10mins, I can feel pressure points/cramp. Not sure if it is better to continue to break into this size, or better to size up?

Thanks for reaching out and watching the channel first of all! So with the hundreds of helmets I have sized for people my experience has shown that if you feel something within the first few minutes like you described I say go the next size up and then try changing the cheekpads. One thing you have to remember is that the measurements suggested by helmet companies are there for a beginning reference point. The best way to find a proper fitting helmet is to try it on like you did! I will admit it is a bit more difficult to do the "pull the chin guard down" test on open face helmets, but you still need to feel comfortable when wearing the helmet. In terms of break in ... that is usually for the cheek pads. Try the medium and if it is loose try a larger cheekpad and topheadliner. I hope this helps!

Good tips. I like your style of presentation :) I am about to take motorcycle lessons and finding a helmet a helmet is a pain. About the fact that the helmet should stop before touching the nose : is it supposed to stop because it touches the chin first ? Or is it more because of the cheek pads / helmet shape ? Cheers

Thanks for enjoying the video! I really make it a mission to help out other riders especially new ones. Now great observation about the helmet and chin. So ideally your forehead should prevent it from going down. The cheek pads helmet keep your helmet more in position on the top of the head as they help push your head up. If you find that the helmet still roles down when doing a size check, try a smaller size, change out cheekpads or go with a round oval headshape. You could try a Bell Bullitt (round oval) or an Arai Quantum-X (round oval). See if those tips work. If not let me know and I can try to diagnose the issue. You in the NYC area?

@@caferacernewyorkcity Hey ! Thanks for the detailed reply. I've tried so many helmets. Scorpion, Shark, Shoei, HJC, LS2, Nolan, Schuberth, Airoh. None fit as I want them too. It's either too much pressure on the side (too oval), too close to the chin bar (not enough space in front of my mouth, probably too round?), or just overall too lose and the helmet can roll down too much to my liking (touches too easily my nose bridge). Sadly I can't try on an Arai, no shop stock them around me + it's too expensive for a helmet to take lessons with. Too afraid to crash with it while learning at motorcycle school (I have to do 30 hours of lesson here). I don't have any Bell retailer around me either :/ I hear the Bullit is crazy noisy too. I do feel like an Arai would be a good fit, but I want to wait and buy it I know how to ride. It shouldn't be mandatory to drop 500-600 euros for a first helmet. Have to say, shopping for a helmet for the first time is a real headache. Most sellers just want to sell. The only competent advsisor/seller I could find told me that 80% of riders ride with a helmet that's too big for them. He couldn't find a proper fitting helmet for me. Best one I could find is a Shark, D skwal 3 size S. Size wise they tell me I should wear an L. No surprise the S is a bit too tight (lots of red mark on my forehead after 30mn of wear). It feels a bit like sitting "on top" of my head too (just a ted). M size is too lose I can roll it down and it touches my nose pretty easily. Otherwise fit is perfect. Around here we can't really change cheek pads, retailers don't have spares we have to around. Such a hassle.

I was trying on the Arai Regent-X in a medium and it felt perfect & snug. When I would push it in towards my face though at the bottom, it would touch my chin. Is this a cause for concern? It seems though with any helmet it will touch my chin no matter what.

Honestly ... I have seen that a few times ... even with my Defiant-X. Ideally your forehead should be preventing the helmet from going any further when you pull down. You may want to try a Signet-X which will give you more room in the front of your mouth. That way you could see if your forehead is stopping the helmet rather than your chin.

that helmet appears to be big for you?

It may seem that way, but keep in mind that it is also a broken in helmet that I have worn for many years. Even at it's age ... almost 5 years ... it still meets my requirements.
