In the last episode of Watch and Learn, we showed you how to size the standard friction or cotter pin bracelet. Today, we tackle the mighty Pin and Collar bracelet that so many people are frightened of. We have all read the horror stories, and maybe even experienced one ourselves when sizing these popular bracelets.
With a little know how, and some 'Watch and Learn' under your belt, there is no need to be apprehensive. We will show you how to tackle the pin and collar bracelet with standard strap tools, and also some non conventional items like paper clips.
This video uses a few tools, and showcases some items available on our website.

these colar and pin systems are a complete nightmare to resize. Not just because it so fiddly and really adds nothing to the reliability or function of the bracelet, but because the collar part is SO TINY that if it flicks off when you are working on it you will never see it again and these are very hard and expensive ton get as replacement parts.

NOTE: For presage bracelet, you also need to drop the collar from inner side of the link. you won't be able to drop it from outside.

My Citizen titanium H500 bracelet also has the collars inside the center part of the link, so you can't tell there is a collar without removing the link first. This type of collar also doesn't come out on the push pin, it just falls out of the link if you're not careful.

So I bought my dad a Prospex and eagerly started the watch sizing.... Having NEVER come across collar and pin... Immediately lost the collar in a deep pile white rug.... Then found it and spent 3.. Yes 3 hours trying to sort the bastard thing out. I could not figure out which end (!...) the collar went in. However, I figured it out by mistake and the watch is still in one piece 3 years and counting! So I think you for this review as I've just ordered an Audaz Octomarine! Keep rocking my friend. Thanks, this video saved my butt when resizing my son's new Citizen watch. Did it on my own to start with, I was incredibly lucky not to lose the collars. Once I saw those, I knew I needed help and found your video. My son's new (2019) Citizen is different than my older one, which is like the Seiko you show here. The newer Citizen has the collar drop into the inner tang of the link, not the outer, which makes assembly and removal much easier, just drop the collar in, put the link together, then drive the pin through. Thanks again for making Dad look good.

Hey man - great video! Just wanted to let you guys know that on my Seiko (Prospex), the collar actually goes in the middle-part of the link, and not from the outside in as shown in this video. I was quite frustrated until I realized, so I thought someone might benefit from this information, if the collar does not fit from the outside as it does in this video :-)

Hi, I have a Prospex Solar Tuna and I think it might be the case with that too. Luckily I had bought the watch with the intention of changing the bracelet and the plastic shroud. When I first replaced the bracelet with a Miltat Endmill, I realised that the standard style bracelet looked better, so ordered another Miltat more inkeeping with the original design. It was then that I tried to size the Seiko bracelet. I found it very difficult to remove the pins and had no idea of pipes. Of course the manual that came with the watch made no mention of pipes & pins and the bracelet resizing instructions were for a regular push pin design (thanks Seiko!)

Mark, this video saved my tail today when I went to adjust my Seiko Presage. I figured it was just a friction / cotter pin adjustment, but nope! I tried to pull out the pin and it would not pull out all the way. Then I remembered this series and watched this video. My collar was hidden in the center of the bracelet. As I watched, you said, “expect the unexpected.” So I grabbed a white paper plate to put under the bracelet. Good thing, as I yanked the pin out the collar popped out of the center and was trapped inside the lip of the plate. Another watch nube saved by Mark of Long Island Watch!

I know this video is 5 years old but I had to chime in after watching said video. I have a HEIMDALLR monster that uses a pin & collar setup but the collar sits in the middle of the link instead of at the end. When resizing you have to put the collar in the middle link first, place the 2 links together then push the pin through. Also worth noting, the pin can be pushed in either side. After watching this video I had to go back to my HEIMDALLR that I sized 2 years ago to double check my work. It was all good. Thanks for all the great videos you make, I love learning new stuff.

I have managed to source an Orange Monster 2nd generation. The watch is in really good condition which I am pleased about. Exactly the same thing happened to me TWICE. Once with a Citizen and once with a Seiko. The time with my brand new Promaster. Literally walking out the shop and it came apart. No idea how I reacted so fast but I managed to catch it. I went back to the counter fuming. The staff just laughed. The second time, with the Seiko, I returned home wearing my new Turtle. Walked into the kitchen and again it came apart on me and again I was super lucky to catch it before it hit the deck. Had to go all the way back to the jewellers in another town at a fair bit of inconvenience. They weren't remotely apologetic or concerned either. What was funny is both of those dealers sell much higher end watches than Seiko and Citizen. Good luck spending £5000+ on a watch with those clowns who cant do even the most basic adjustments. After my bad experiences. i bought a watch tool kit off amazon and fix my own bracelets now. If i mess it up and it falls off my wrist at least that's on me.

For the SARX045 and similar, the pin works a bit different. The end with the arrows is too narrow for the pin to come out or be inserted. You have to insert it in the center section and then insert the pin as shown. Took me a bit to figure that out as my SARB and SBDC work like the video does. Thanks, Mark!

My samurai is the same, it came from the factory that way. So he's doing it wrong for modern Seiko bracelets (or at least many of threm). When the collar is in the male (smaller) part of the link it''s much easier and no fiddling around with pushing from both sides that he talks about. The outer part of the next link holds the collar in place while you insert the pin.

Bought the Seiko SSC508 because of the 5 second screen time from this video. Means a lot when a watch can make a man buy it just from a 5 second clip. I think it was the coined edge that got me. Something about coined edges gives a watch the perception of much higher quality. Mark, will we see a review on the SSC508?

I got introduced to the pin and collar system the hard way, shortening the bracelet of my Citizen Promaster Skyhawk. I didn't know about this system so I took out the pins and lost the collars. Naturally when I put the pins back in they just dropped out again. I put in split pins as a temporary measure but bit by bit I found back all the collars in my carpet. Just by the way the light reflected of off them so I was able to put everything back in order but yeah.... lesson learned! Btw, with the Citizen watchband the collar drops in a hole in the middle part of the link at the side where the arrow is, not at the outside as in this video.

My prospex has the collars on the inside of the link. A lot better design because you don’t need to hold it in while you push the pin in. This was my first pin and collar job. My $20 Amazon watch took kit did the trick. I much prefer screws. But it wasn’t to bad. Temporarily lost a collar that was still in the link and shot a pin across the room squeezing my tweezers to tightly. Took 3 times as long as screws and way more complicated.

Thanks for the great video. Please point out that the collar may need to be inserted into the inner hole. I found the collar impossible to fit into the outer part! I didn't try the inner holes!. And then I went and lost two little collars trying to jam them in :-( I may try the other links now that I know this (on a new padi srpb99 bracelet)

7 years later, you’re still helping people. I had a little heart attack when one little piece fell out of my new Seiko Astron while resizing the bracelet. I had no clue that this pin system existed. Thanks to you I managed to do it and my watch fits perfectly.

Yup. I'm one of those guys! Marc, you just saved me my sanity, thank you! In my youth I previously had 3 Seiko watches, all with split pin type bracelets. I was unaware of the Pin and Collar gizmo. After many years of iffy watches I decided to buy a nice diver again and today I received my SBDC029 Shogun. When I got home I began scrounging round the house for a suitable tool to resize/remove a link or 2 etc and after failing to find a decent pin or paper clip, a tool in the Samsung phone box seemed to meet the requirements. I pushed the first pin out the right way (that much I knew), and proceeded to the next only to notice this tiny other cylindrical piece of metal lying there. Curious I put it aside and lone behold after the 2nd pin another one (the collars) Terrified I was messing up big time I hopped onto google and youtube and this video came up. Thanks man, this really helped. Big thumbs up and sub.

wish I had seen this (and the previous video) last night when I was struggling for 2 hours using an old stud earring and a rock, yes I was using an actual rock to resize my bracelet. also was surprised by the pin and collar system, didn't know about those before. should get one of those pin vices the next time.

Thank you so much, just had to resize a citizen and could not for the life of me figure out how to do the collar. On my watch it needs to be dropped in to the center and then the rest of the pin inserted through the “u” shaped link.

Very instructional - thank you. I still hate the pin and collar system. Seiko kindly sent me a spare couple of pin & collar pieces for my Turtle, after I lost the collar for one of the pins. I followed the video here, and it made total sense. However, my collar is not compressed sufficiently, even though it's inside the link. The little bugger still slips out. Are there different sizes/widths for these things? I supplied Seiko with the exact model of my watch.

Man, I’ve only dealt with screws and must say that’s the best way to do it. I think the only reason the pin method is used is so they can get you to go to a jewelry store.

Hi, I noticed when watching the video the Seiko Prospex Solar Power World Time you were warring was not pictured with the gold accent on your website. The Seiko Prospex Solar Power World Time, Chronograph, Alarm Watch #SSC487 kind of looks something like yours, but didn't come in the gold as pictured here. Is this style of Seiko Solar still available? I just ordered and received a Seiko Presage automatic from your company the one with the white-ish sun burst face with blue hour and minute hands. Really a nice watch. The shipment was really fast and I love the watch. Thanks so much

SARB033 has pins and collars too, but the pins don't have an obvious head on them, so it's hard to know which end goes in first. Also, I can't get the collar to go back in the hole after dozens of tries. It does NOT just slide in like in your example. The collars are split so that they spring open when they are removed, and it seems like you need some kind of tiny tool to compress the collar in order to drive it back into the hole it came out of. Maybe you have a SARB033 lieing around and you could do a "How to size" video on one of those?

I have Seiko SSC813 I don’t think I have collars on both sides. It’s really annoying to resize. Pretty much impossible. Collar’s won’t go inside that hole. Stupid system by Seiko. Now I have to take it to watchmaker and pay them to do it.

About two years ago, I bought a lovely SPB219 and have worn it more than occasionally since. I happened to be typing a lot and released the clasp to wear the watch up on my forearm and out came the pin and off slid the watch - luckily into my lap. I look in the parts bag and find three links, two pins, and THREE collars. Nice of those fellas to throw in an extra collar for when the one that was holding the watch together evaporated. Thanks for this tutorial!

I have a Hamilton Jazzmaster that has pins and collars. It was one of the first watches I ever bought. When I went to remove a link on the bracelet, I had ZERO knowledge and experience. I learned a lot in that first hour fussing around with these tiny pieces. Now I'm wondering if I put them in backwards though!

So THANKS! Amateur tip: if your table isn't white, just put an A4 page underneath everything, really helped.

How do you put the collar back in when it has expanded to a larger size than the link hole? I was simply removing some links on a Citizen CA0650-58E titanium strap (with proper tools of course) and bent one of the the collars while trying to put the strap back together. There doesn't seem to be a way to get any of the collars back on. The only choice seems to be a NATO strap now.

Hi Mark, I have two questions and the first one is if it is a same thing with folded links and the next one is will i solve the problem(either loose, either tight), if I get a new clasp with 5-6 micro adjustments when now I have only two and I can't get it right. Thanks in advance and sorry for my english. It is not my first language as I'm from Croatia. All the best...

Hi, may be a silly question! I have bought Truwood Apple watch band which has those arrows on 3 links both side, (which indicates/tells you) to push the pins, however, there are some links without the arrows, does it mean that you can not remove the links without the arrows? I really like your video because you have explain things in details. Thank you so much.

I bought a relatively inexpensive Calvin Klein automatic and then found it had pins and collars. Instructive video, but still not easy without appropriate tools. The collars have to go inside one of the inner links of the jubilee bracelet, the drilled holes being ever so slightly wider. And despite my best efforts collars still managed to jump out of my tweezers on to the floor, but luckily I did manage to find them. What I do now is slip the collar over a tweezer end, and then insert it in the appropriate hole. Now we need a video for removing pins with screws on both sides, stuck on with Loctite.
