“It’s not about copying, it’s learning about where shapes go” is unironically some of the best advice you can give to a starting artist.

I like to think about it that to make your own art, you need to draw and learn someones art. That's why i like to redraw characters i like, and remember how to achieve a specific pose, or hair line, it helps in making my own

I think looking at other people's art is something that should be done for fun but never for study. Beginners should always look at reference from life because the goal of art is to replicate the rules of the 3D world we live in and artists don't always follow them.

@@sael5084 looking at what you've posted, you have definitely improved. Comparing the sketches from one of your videos just 2 weeks ago and the video you posted yesterday, i quickly spotted your improvement. Also, I noticed that (at least from what you have posted) everything you draw is the same, it's all just pose sketches. Try doing something new, like landscape practices, drawing buildings, or objects in your room! And don't just keep doing sketches over and over, try making a complete projects to put the skills you got from sketching to use (try adding colors or put the character in a room/environment!) It is hard to improve when only doing what you already know how to do, because you will eventually hit a glass ceiling and stop improving all together.

I did this a few years ago. I abandoned using any kind of pencil and stuck to using a red or black pen for a long while. It does level up your game when you go for something permanent and focus on gesture drawings to get a feel for poses. It forces you to really think about the impact each line has.

For the past 5 years since I started drawing, my sketchbook pages had been filled with nothing but cautious, dull, lifeless graphite sketches. As of late I've really grown to appreciate the spontaneity and energy behind using tools and materials that can't be erased, and since then I've been making it a point to myself to avoid pencils like the plague unless I _really_ need them. I was initially scared this might make my sketchbook pages look messy and incoherent, but instead I've found myself loving even the roughest of sketches just for being something bold and different. Gotta say, as a highly insecure artist, it's been doing wonders for self confidence.

Any time a tutorial says something like "You need to do something scary" or "You'll have to go outside your comfort zone", I immediately find myself more interested because most tutorials out there try to make things sound less difficult than it really can be. I've always thought calming, reassuring phrases like "You can do it" are more dangerous than anything in teaching, at least for me. To put it symbolically, I'd much rather be afraid to take a fall but know how to land if I make a mistake rather than be confident but unaware of the fall to begin with. When I began to think that way, I started to find a lot more acceptance in drawings that didn't reach the expectations that I set for myself. I appreciate the way you made this video, I think it'll be valuable for a lot of people!

Very true! My guess for why a lot of tutorials don't try to push people out of their comfort zones is 😊because they want to attract a general audience that are still beginners to drawing. The tutorial videos for when artists are at an intermediate level or looking for improvement on drawing take some extra digging. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The hardest part of drawing more confidently is HAVING the confidence in yourself
@elijahd.techgnostic
@elijahd.techgnostic Жыл бұрын
Exactly. This is something I struggle with and really can't overcome ever.
@puosti
@puosti Жыл бұрын
@@elijahd.techgnostici think the best and strongest thing to do when it comes to confidence in general is to keep an eye out for those negative thoughts that pop up in your head, identify them, then just prove that thought wrong and dismiss it. lets say your drawing something and it’s going bad and you think “oh this is hopeless” you probably think that because of your belief that you’re not good enough at art or something along those lines, so think about that belief in your mind and tell yourself it’s untrue. show yourself the past where you weren’t as good, or a time were you learnt something useful that you implemented in your art to improve, or look at one of the drawings youre proud of. once you prove to yourself that you actually aren’t hopeless and that you are good at art, even on a rough day where your art isn’t as good, you can show yourself that you still have the potential to grow and that the art you’re struggling on will be able to get somewhere if you just keep going. the thoughts will definitely still be there, but every time they come up you just need to keep repeating that until over time they start to become more quiet. it’s really hard, and this whole thing even happens generally especially with me since i have social anxiety, which is where i got this whole technique as it originally wasn’t for art but works really well for it, and i’d say probably everyone has these thoughts. but improving not only your artistic confidence but your self-confidence can be so good. it’s all about just realising that you don’t need to be amazing or great at art and make no mistakes, mistakes are what makes us learn. art is such a hard mental toll sometimes but what can you do, just gotta get through it and appreciate the fact you have such a cool hobby that gives you a such creative and active mind :))) appreciate that gift cause its super awesome!!

Listen to me right now mate, I'm currently doing a first year degree in Fine Arts at a major university in my country: If you go to Uni for 'Fine Arts' specifically, you WILL be learning contemporary art, that means abstract stuff, sculptures, and a bit of painting for me, for you probably similar. If you are going to a community college, or something smaller scale specifically for conceptual art/animation/game stuff, itll be different and more relevant to you immediately. I have a friend going to a community college for concept art and animation, he loves it. Its instantly useful to him. Currently he is learning animation. You WILL learn 3d modelling. The sooner you become acquainted with autocad and blender, the better. Personally I would not recommend Fine Arts degree, because its all just catered to contemporary art stuff and doesnt teach you fundamentals. Lastly, enjoy Uni. Its a great reset, and a chance to get to know new people of a similar calibre and interests. Enjoy it! And make friends early, and fast in the first few weeks. Dont get left behind. Just talk to people for anything. You'll do fine.

a minutes and 20 seconds in and you already blew my mind by reminding me that most of my favorite sketches that I've made were done ON Binded Paper and with Pen. The only other cases were when I was little and only had brief moments to capture a feeling on paper; always spontaneous and competetively charged. Years of references, comparisons and criticism nullified that childish confidence. I get that old Van Gough quote now.

"...and not worry about perfection or performance." Wow, that really hit me. I've been drawing for decades but I've really been struggling to just enjoy it lately, which means I haven't been doing it much. I think that pressure to always perform is a huge part of it (thanks social media). I'm going to try this approach and see if I can break out of always needing to harshly criticize my own work.

In one of the most helpful classes I ever took, my teacher John had only one rule for us: "No erasers." He was more concerned with making us think about what we were doing, how to move forward, and even how to embrace the occasional mistakes. It was the single most eye opening and important lesson I ever received as far as drawing goes. So yeah, sketching with pens is absolutely wonderful advice. Even if you mess up, just try again instead of trying to fix what you did, you will grow so much more this way.

Just sharing a tip for anyone using gel pens. Because its gel it can smudge really easily and it can bleed/run with water. So if u like to use watercolor over your sketches id say go for a ballpoint or something less "wet" also dont press too hard on fine tip pens the nib will break and its harder to use. Ots a sketch so most people wont press hard but ive broken lots of good pens that way 😭

Watching this I realized that it is discussing and putting into words what I have been doing all this time whenever I try to sketch, I like using the pen more than the pencil because whenever I make a mistake I embrace it, sometimes I would just correct it by drawing over it and it wouldn't look bad but for the most part I just let most mistakes be so that I can see what I needed to improve on. Great video, definitely a good advice for sketching 👍👍
