Hi Paul, Nice work. Question. My apartment has regular smooth, flat surfaces on the ceiling, ie: no popcorn, but is a little uneven and shoddy in lots of spots. It's a fifty year old apartment complex and the painters year after year, tenant after tenant just sloppily spray another coat on top of the previous coats. So to smooth it out to what I read a while ago is called a " level 5 skim coat " to look really nice and even and sharp, I would need to do a base coat with USG joint compound as you did here, but then how many coats after that with a lighter compound ( blue lid? ) that you mentioned? And would I do all the walls in the same way and with the same compounds as the ceiling? Thanks Paul. Appreciate any help.

Are there a lot of chunks of popcorn ceiling that break off and cause issues with a smooth finish or impact the performance of your tools and mud?

Hey Michael I was thinking the same thing. In this case he said it was most likely asbestos and hard enough that it wouldn't break off. I have noticed with newer popcorn cielings the chunks do come off. Most of the time, if you are able to you would Scrape the popcorn off. It depends on what kind of paint they used on the cieling I suppose. I have found the easiest to Scrape off is flat paint. If it's got a shine it's a little more difficult. In this case I'm sure he tested a small area to see how hard the paint was.

Hi Paul, do I have to use surface sealer (GARDZ - ZINSSER) before skim coating? After skim coating do I have to apply surface sealer before painting?
