What a wonderful time we live in. I've watched a lot of videos on this topic of drywall. I would just like to say how great it is to have amazing resources like youtube where you find people like yourself, The Kilted Guy that you can clearly see what a master you have become in your trade. From Grandmas cooking in their kitchens to some guy in India making sandals on the street...you sometimes get a glimpse into the raw talent that may go unnoticed otherwise. The years of you honing his skills really show.

A lot of people like to use a wide skim coat blade or 12-14" knife for skim coating. I have found the best tool for that is a 4"x8" smart phone so I can call somebody who is good at skim coating. It really cuts down on the amount of sanding I have to do.

I have been using these for over 10 years now , in the UK these were marketed towards wet-wall plasterers as polishing blades , i seen them and said to my self... those would be good for taping , makes wiping down high ceilings after boxing a breeze with the extension pole for them , they are amazing at wiping hot mud too for first coat

I'm buying one of these! Looks exactly what I need for my walls! I'm renovating the walls in our fixer upper and the previous owner applied this really weird swirl texture to all the walls with what they said was a sea sponge. It's horrible! Lol!! Anyways I've spent hours sanding the high spots and now I just need to float the walls so this will hopefully be perfect !

I worked for a fancy painting company for awhile. It was really impressive to watch the drywall guys at jobsites. They would be on their stilts with a 4 foot blade smoothing out rooms in a matter of minutes. They called the method skip plastering. It left random imperfections all over the wall but they were consistent. At first I was fixing all the little imperfections all over the wall then I was told "oh no those get to stay there it’s skip plastering. " All I can say is "well they missed a spot."

Appreciate the effort put into your video. A few pointers that you can try out to see how it works for you... - For finish coat(s) thin out the mud so that it will drip back into the bucket 🪣 . This will save your shoulders and arms especially when doing more than repairs. - Apply your thinned-out mud with a mud roller dipped in the mud bucket. When applying the thinned mud this way it will almost get rid of all air bubbles 🫧 and will make a second coat much easier or maybe not even necessary. Carry on. 👍

My old man was a handy man. The jack of all trades but a master of none which is better than a master of one type. When he'd go a replace a water tank he would keep the outer casing and cut them done to skim coat a textured ceiling or after popcorn removal. He cut off what ever length he liked and slip it into a maple spine he had made up for them. He made a lot of his own tools that are now in a mass produced commercial world. If he only had the sense to develop or patent and market some of the things he came up with. Or if i had a memory to have done them before it was to late thats theres 50 chinese knock off versions as well lol.

Great video, the new studio lighting is really good at showing the defects like you said in the video. I’ve been looking at the Level 5 blades and thought they could speed up repairs, and now you have confirmed it, I was on your store last night but did not see it, I will look again because you deserve the money. I also did not see the Marshalltown tools there anymore did you change everything to Level 5? Thanks again for putting out such great videos! Mark. P.S. I mostly do 5 min repair in 1 or 2 pans with a wet knockdown pull as my sand, but this thing makes me want to try a 20 float coat after a somewhat sloppy 5 min mesh and mud. It would depend on the place im working. Some places want quick, some want awesome finish.

I’ve got it down to where I can do fast and top notch quality. For example I recently charged $240 to fix 2 holes in the wall about first sized in 2 rooms. Owner wanted it done super fast so I was complete with texture and cleanup in less than an hour. (Skip trowel Match). She was thrilled. These are the things I’m teaching on my channel.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY sounds like me. I do apt repairs 1x1 or 2x2 patches in way less than an hour, with paint for about $125 and 150 respectively. A pan with a 6 and a 10 and a rollnof mesh. Usually mudding on the mesh since it's a dirty surface. Thats my life in a nutshell.

Still watching a lot of your awesome content and learning a lot. Quick question. I want to attempt to get a level 5 finish on a big project, walls and ceilings. I’m going to invest in a big, two handed, skim coating blade (I won’t use a handle so that’s not a limitation) and wondered how big you’d recommend going. Is 48” useful? I am a 6’4” amateur! Looking at the DeWalt range - they have 7, 14, 16, 24, 32, 40 and 48 inch blades. I already have 8, 10 and 12 inch taping knives so not sure of the benefit of smaller skimming blades. What say you?

Hi, just now found this comment. I would suggest a 32" blade like this one as the most useful all around. Yes, and I'll be using it on a ceiling in a day or two, skim coating over old texture. I might do a video on that and share it. Kilt, I know when we skim coat that rough surface we get those marks that will go left to right when we spackle the ceiling in one direction, so like many spacklers, going in the opposite direction , we use those high spots left from the blade to fill the low spots and use the high spots as a guide. In two passes they are gone especially when we pull a tight skim and hold the blade almost flat. I'm not convinced this tool will make the job faster and any better. Even on walls, I think it's time consuming after 40 yrs of spackling to change and use a tool that needs to be cleaned off with another tool. Just my opinion. I may only use it on a nasty seam on a wall or repair like you said, but not for a total skim job. I think I can move 3xs as fast without it. I may get backlash on this, but I'm speaking for myself. I know for a fact a man with your expertise will also spackle even faster and still get that level 5 with your knives. Anyway thank you for that video

I’ve done my repairs using a12 inch or 14 inch knife all my life until the last few years when I discovered these blades. I think for novices once you get the hang of using it, it will give you a better repair that you have to sand less so I think a 24 inch is a good width. Most any crack on a wall or ceiling needs to be floated out about 24 inches anyway. Watch some of my other recent videos and you will see me demonstrating that. 7:15 I agree. Bought a Level-5 skim blade plus the holder ($35 more), then discover I have to buy their pole (another $35). This is what turns me off to a company. Outside of their greed, there is no reason to have a proprietary pole attachment when they could have done a simple, standard screw-in. I'm returning the Level 5 skim blade because of this.
@ctclmichaud
@ctclmichaud 2 жыл бұрын
I know your comment is 8 months old but I have the Level 5 pole setup and the reason you don't want to use a standard screw-in pole (like for rollers) is precisely because they can unscrew. When you're drywalling, you need to be able to exert pressure on either side of the tool. You do this at times by changing the angle and at times by slightly rotating the handle. Rotating the handle counterclockwise to feather the left edge of your work area would tend to unscrew the handle. The Level 5 handle clicks in and cannot rotate. That is why it is the way it is. I don't use my handle as much as I thought I would, though.

In all my years, I’ve honestly never found a solution to the bubbles that eliminates them all. A little bit of soap, and thinning it down helps some but don’t expect miracles. If there are imperfections in a skim coat and you're trying to go for a smooth finish, is it possible to fill things like scratches, pocks, and rougher areas without those areas flashing after priming and painting? Oddly enough, I haven't found many videos from *anyone* on how to properly touch up a skim coat (if that's even possible). I've watched videos on what *not* to do when touching up a skim coat (i.e. we should touch up after priming, don't touch up sanded mud, etc.). But I can't find a video on how to properly touch up a skim coat without having splotches and flashing all over the place. I mean, I know ideally a skim coat should be perfect after applying it, with no tool marks etc., but let's be real, there's always going to be something that gets through, whether it's an occasional hitchhiker scratch or an accidental ding in the wall from a stray tool. But surely re-skimming the whole wall isn't the only solution in all these cases?

Nice... I missed several points. You taped one void but not the other. So, taping a void like these two isn't really necessary? Second, you did sand and do some scraping, but overall you simply mudded over the painted surface... right? Or did I miss a step? And lastly, you compared a novice to a pro by the rectangular sander vs the round sander... isn't the logic amd physics in the orbital coverage superior in finish to a rectangular finish? Just in surface area alone and edge gouging the round seems superior unless the transmission on energy isn't as effective sue to the extended surface area. I am intrigued and want your experienced explanation. Awesome video.... thx💪👍👍
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY

Not sure what void you saw, but yes sand painted walls before coating to ensure better adhesion and knock off bumps. Hand sanding is better than my circular sander, but the power sander is faster. It's not random orbit, it's circular power sander, and leaves more swirls, and is harder to get a nice flat surface with, but it's biggest pro is dust collection. By hand, round is better for novices, but I just like my rectangular one better as I've used them since 1977.

Because I can’t work naked. Why do you care? What difference does it make how someone dresses. And it’s much cooler, less restrictive, and I’m not afraid to be different. I don’t believe in dressing like 98% of the population doing this stuff. PS, it’s actually a kilt but it doesn’t matter. Good day
