Great stuff from an old plasterer! I've got to go to my son's in swfl to skim his ceilings they've got a funky swirl texture. If I wasn't lazy I'd plaster it. Plastering since 86

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. I'm really surprised that plastering is only used in 1% of work in the USA. You're obviously a very skilled craftsman in your methods I'd I really enjoy your videos. I think there's a great business opportunity for anyone who is willing to learn the traditional method of plastering, especially skimming walls and ceilings. A skilled plasterer will skim coat most sized rooms in a day and the customer will be left with a perfectly flat and super smooth finish, ready for painting and no sanding.

I wish the previous residents of my place knew this. When I moved in I stripped 4 layers of woodchip wallpaper each had been painted from my livingroom. You could see the poor repairs done to holes in the wall. One wall looked like it had a massive egg pushing the plasterboard into the room. They had used EXTERNAL wall filler. It was literally like cement. Stripping, removing old filler, filling and replacing plasterboard took 3 days. Flattening the skirting boards took another day. Glossing and papering took a day and a half. Won't be doing that again in a hurry but I had to do it right.

i have been trying to skim coat the paneling in my mobile home.I fill the gaps with 5 minute mud,then try to go over the walls with a skim coat using 45 minute mud.It has been very challenging.No matter how clean the walls,tools and mud are,i always seem to get drag marks,like something is in the mud or on the knife.I have tried varying the thickness of the mud,seems to go on a little better on the thick side but i notice i get a lot more like air bubbles.I think i need to try and work on getting the ridge lines so it will be easier to sand.I think i am getting better,then i hold up a light to it and it's a bumpy mess... I am getting it done but it is very tedious,slow and sometimes aggravating.Appreciate your videos,you are very clear and easy to understand,thank you!

I'm definitely going to need multiple coats doing this the first time. It's hard to gauge how much to put on and leave on. Thick mud is the key to reducing the number of coats because it holds on better to textured valleys than a thinned down mud.

I've been using +3 since a USG rep brought it out on a job here in the desert. '78 '79? A long time ago. All the joint compound companies first introduced their products here in the Coachella Valley. They figured if it worked here... it'll work everywhere. Going on my 48 year of drywall finishing. I've seen a lot for sure. AND I still love +3. USG has the best Taping Compound out there too. I only recommend that for "stringing" tape with a Bazooka though.
@KurtfromLaQuinta
@KurtfromLaQuinta 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, I use USG Taping "Mud" a lot for a final coat of a "Putty Coat" for smooth wall. It has a long open time. Goes on very slick. It dries like a rock so you must be very clean with it. I put it on with a roller... wipe it off very tight. No sanding. I despise sanding.

I own a building company in the Uk and have visited the USA a few times. I was amazed that all the buildings have the popcorn effect on the walls and ceilings. I didn't see very many beautifully flat surfaces. I enjoyed your video but here in the UK the method you use is only used here in low quality work. The method we use for high quality work is plastering with a hawk and trowel - gives a perfectly smooth, flat surface with no sanding. I was wondering why so many videos I watch from the USA use your method and nobody seems to do plastering - have you tried plastering and is there many plasterers in the USA?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 жыл бұрын
I think here in the US we like drywall because it's affordable and very easy to repair, vs plaster. I would say less than 1% of homes here have plaster. I like both, but would likely do drywall on my own home. It can look just fine when done right.

I used a 12" blade like this for years for skimming and got REALLY good at it THEN.....discovered the hawk and pool float. Even as good at skimming to flat as I had become with a 12" blade like this, there was NO going back. Hawk n trowel/float IS the way to go. Much faster and MUCH easier to achieve flatness and you don't get those damn hard corners diggin into your work. Flat and NO sanding!

BAD NEWS- Hey everyone, as of 9/21/20 we have some bad news. We are suddenly being kicked out of our rental due to the sale of the home, (we were planning on buying next summer) and I'm having some tough medical issues such as Prostate Cancer, Permanent Vertigo, Restless Legs, Neuropathy (nerve damage) etc. So we put out a video explaining this and many of you asked us to create a Gofundme so you could say thanks for all the help I've given you on these videos, my comments, etc. I really hesitated, as I hate asking for donations, but then you said it wasn't a donation, it was a way for you to say thanks. So if you want to know more here's the video explaining what all has been going on (moved 9 times in 12 years, my wifes 3 knee replacements, and much more). kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4OwqH6VgbmEh9U You can also just read about it on the gofundme page at: gf.me/u/yzzj9n NOTE: please don't contribute if it puts any strain on you at all, and there is zero expectations, or anything like that. But if you'd like to give back, Thank you.

I tried the roller application method another guy showed. After doing 3 walls I think I will try working with the knife and pan. Roller method you have to thin out the mud a lot which means a lot of knife work. I realized when I glooped a bunch of mud on with the roller it required less knife work.

I've got a water damaged textured popcorn ceiling and I'm trying to figure out the most economical way to get a good result. This is one more idea to consider. I'm looking at glue on tiles. Is glue on a good idea? One problem is the room has three walls; the house is split level and is open between rec room and kitchen that is connected by a short stair case. The transition zone is where the problem occurred. I'm not sure if the glue on will look okay there.

I will be releasing a video series soon showing how it can look really good to just put texture right over the top of another, without skimcoating first. Otherwise, skim coating is the best way to change it.

I’m going to do a video soon showing how you can also skimcoat by rolling the mud on with a paint roller. For some people who are new to this, it could be the easier way. The problem is it won’t go on quite as thick and may take two coats for hiding some textures. But you basically roll on mud as thick as possible and use something like a magic trowel, or if you’re gentle you can use a 12 inch steel knife. I’ve never done it this way because I am pretty much an expert with a pan and a knife and it’s just faster plus I can put it on thicker. So that gives you another option anyway.

For the final coat you want to sand with really fine sandpaper like 320 grit but the coarsest would be 220 grit. And sand very lightly.

No I recommend scrap and sand the entire house then prime and paint much easier than adding mud and trying to make it flat this guy couldn’t even do a 2x4 area flat. Imagine your whole house. Trust me I do remodeling specially and only on Sheetrock . Skim coat only works on very small walls or ceiling

Skim coating wont fix anything but very minor surface defects. It won't fix things like remaining glue on the wall. I would use the oil based kilz, or my favorite, RX-35, from Home depot or Sherwin Williams. 😎👣

I am allowed to apply a skim coat since its already smooth and no pop corn or I am still required to apply skim coating to achieve good texture once I start painting the wall?. Please answer me ASAP.

I've just scraped my popcorn bathroom ceiling. I'm now really worried as you just mentioned asbestos might be in some mix. I know for sure that the popcorn texture has been up for more than 20yrs. I wore the necessary PPE: mask, googles, gloves and covered my hair and wore appropriate clothing. It took a long time to clear up after scraping. The mixture was very wet as I used water and vinegar to moisten the ceiling prior to and during scraping. What's the likelihood that my ceiling had Asbestos? Is there a way of knowing without having to call in the specialist?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 жыл бұрын
You really can't know for sure without testing, but you can test it yourself with one of the kits below. amzn.to/2MPhO0u But minor exposure to asbestos is highly unlikely to cause any problems. I believe it's the repeated exposure that harms us. After 35 years of doing this I'm sure I've breathed it in many times and at age 58 I have no issues from it that I know of.
