She's not a terrible rider. She's doing a lovely job sitting that trot, and it does not look like the most comfortable ride. Why are some people so rude?

For those that dont have a small yard, grab some steel pickets and white electric fence tape and make a small area off the boundry of existing paddock. I put 3 rows of tape so my gelding could see it. Worked a treat! Its a square pen about 10m X 25m. Anyway, this is a great little video. Its great when people do demonstrations on horses that actually need the training so you can see how the rider deals with the problem when there is a problem.

What stupid comments people are posting, for the most part. No need to diss someone or question their authority just because you are having difficulty, or have had success with slightly different means. I've taken lessons for years, and this is consistent with what I've learned, overall. There will always be exceptions, but these are solid suggestions.

when you trot it is a good idea to post because it is easier on a horse's lungs. Also keep your hands steady don't keep bouncing them. BTW keep a lighter rein on your horse some horses will go faster when you pull on the reins and keeping a tight rein will teach them to run through the bit.

There are different philosophies on how to best apply leg pressure. As a rule of thumb, think about how it makes sense to teach a horse to move away from pressure, not against it. For this specific exercise, some people use their outside leg, especially their thigh, to move the horse's shoulder. Other people use their inside leg near the girth to round the horse, as if you are pushing their belly away.

Wow some people are rude! Anyway, I need help with a more specific question (this question is open to anyone who knows)! My horse is 13, in the few months that I have had her I have barrel raced. These past few months i have decided to stop barrel racing and do horsemanship (big change I know) and my horse is faster than this^! I will admit I have not been as consistant as I should but that's because I don't really feel confident with what i am doing with her. She has a very fast trot, holds her head high, and sometimes goes against the bit. I ride with very loose reins, i give her freedom to move, I circle her, and I even do patterns to keep her occupied! I am at a loss of what to do and need answers!!! My method always worked with the horses back at my old barn but it just doesn't click with my horse. I think not being consistant has a big part in it!

great video for anyone to follow, since people use the bit too much to correct a horse and maybe are not finessed with the pressure in minute enough increments. The previous post mentioned little pulls on the bit, but they can break the canter also or cause buck or bracing. Continued practice and they figure out you want the slow canter. I agree they have to figure out the balance of their own bodies, and take responsibility for their feet. They get more coordinated as time goes on.

Train you horse to ride on the buckle? You did not train or ride this horse on the buckle in this video. Your title is misleading. Here's a true title for this video: "How to trot and canter around for a few minutes and accomplish nothing of value with your horse".

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG with all horse riders? They enjoy criticizing MORE THAN RIDING! ...I cannot tell whether she is great or bad rider (I am beginner, only 50 hours in saddle), but I am pretty sure she is not the worst rider on this planet. From my point of view the horse is confused because she tell him with her legs to go into gallop and then immediately slows him down with her hands (to stay in a small circle in front of the camera). I am very experienced freediver (more than 10 years of experience) and mountaineer (more than 7 years of experience) and I can tell that to enter these 2 sports is very pleasant for any beginner, whilst entering horse riding is completely different experience... because of many "very clever" and "very professional" people, who knows absolutely EVERYTHING and don´t miss ANY chance to criticize....

The horse is not being told to gallop. It is being told to canter, if you know enough to comment like that you will know that there Is something called collected, working and extender canter. The horse is in extended or working, and we want it to slow down into collected. As much as we have to be kind to horses, if you be realistic you have to be firm. Not by hurting the horse, not by making it a "slave", but you still need it to know that you are in control. Being in control is not abuse. You can teach horses about this and get them to know about extended, working and collected by doing the circle. It is going to be easier for the horse to do the circle if it slows down, aka being collected. But it needs to know that it should not go back to trot, only slow down. I don't know what you mean by criticizing, if you mean correcting every little detail, it is because it is important to make the horse as good as possible without tugging the reins. If you are going to give the horse to a family with a little child in the future, if the horse is going to have a very rough and bounce canter, the child might fall off. And, every detail that is corrected makes it nice for the horse. For example, if the horse is having trouble speeding up, it is much nice getting a little squeeze than needing five kicks and two whips. If you can correct that, it makes it easier for the rider and less painful for the horse. Or if a horse refuses the bridle, it is better to check the fittings and teeth, and maybe change the bit.

Hi everyone, I will be taking this video down shortly. The exercise described is extremely useful, I've used it to teach horses to maintain their speeds with completely loose reins and eventually bridleless. However, the horse used in this video was not the best choice to demonstrate this particular exercise. It is causing too much confusion and negative comments. I do want to thank those who commented with constructive criticism and who had the insight to extract any useful information from the video. As RareEnoughToFind22 pointed out, there is more than one way of doing things.

Please don't take the video down. It is extremely useful to people who are having similar issues with a horse. I have a horse who was much like this one. She had a much faster way of going though. A huge motor and only one speed. Fast! She walked fast, trotted fast and loped off, fast! It took quite a bit of work to slow her down. It was also very hard to stay out of her mouth to slow her down.Thankfully, with much work and determination, my horse is now traveling at the pace I ask of her. Without much rein contact at all. It took the proper knowledge to achieve these transitions smoothly. None of it happened without being unseated, unbalanced, or using improper hands signals and legs at one time or another. This young lady's hands were off, her seat was off and she was thrown about in the saddle somewhat, but it's irrelevant in the big picture. I say "so what'! Taking in to consideration that this horse is clearly green. She made great use of her hands, legs and seat where and when necessary to get her point across. It was a great example of horsemanship on a rough riding horse. I can find hundreds of videos of people riding well trained horses making smooth transitions from one gait to another. Hundreds of people with perfectly correct hands, legs and seat position. But most of them don't show the real picture. This one does! Leave this one up and let the greenhorns make ignorant comments.

You know, angry people, she may not be the best rider, but there are things you can learn from this video. A circle to help slow them down for example. And yes her reins are tight, but it's not as much pressure as it would be with a shank bit...

I've got an awesome horse, BUT his only kink is he likes to buck at high speeds 😆 I can sit most bucks, but a handstand at a gallop is difficult. I went against my better judgment and opened him up between 2 horses that he hates(one up front bucked in his face) needless to say the 2nd buck threw me. I'm actually about to do the circle exercise as stated above. Mine neck reins, but thanks for showing me that even the best horses have their bad days. Also I may add that a collected horse in the right lead decrease you losing your seat. (My new horse has terrible collection)

I'm no trainer, but those "circles" were wayyy to small, in a canter a horse needs a bigger circle so that they don't lose their balance (same with the person's balance too) that's why her horse went to trot.

I think the comments need to chill. Like seriously, when you're training horses your eq is often destroyed, as you are focusing on the horse.
@maura_the_rose

***** Indeed it does, but sometimes, when you're training a horse, you have to ride them a certain way and it soon becomes a bad habit. Like with my western project (under instruction.) I had to ride him by sitting back on my butt (I ride him english too,) and, up until recently, it was unfortunately how I rode other horses too. We've since fixed it, but the point of riding with weirder-looking eq at first is to focus upon certain aspects of early training. c:
@maura_the_rose
@maura_the_rose 8 жыл бұрын
***** Unfortunately that isn't entirely true. Though I do agree training isn't always pretty, you have to eventually ride with the correct equitation and teach them how to correspond with it. Equitation is all about how you ride and the affect is has on the horse. c: Hope this helps.

While I understand and agree with the concept being taught in this video I think teaching this horse collection and bending first would make slowing down come a bit more naturally. It's pretty hard to slow down when she's strung out like a labrador chasing a bouncing ball. Just my opinion.
@sketchalater4656
@sketchalater4656 Жыл бұрын
collecting comes later in training. Controlling the speed matters more than collection imho. I do agree with the bending though, I do a very similar exercise with my mare. She used to have a very speedy trot, and I'd take her into a circle and encourage her to also give to the inside rein and bend around my leg.

Yes this video was not the best at showcasing the results. It was shot in a very short time period, so you don't get to see much of the before and after unfortunately. I often use a variation of this exercise where I first teach them at the walk, then trot, and finally canter. The more you can break it down, the faster they will learn. I also find it easier to turn them if they break their gait instead of just speeding up, they seem to make the connection faster that way.

Or you could half-halt? I mean, as a horseback rider, you need a strong core, so half-halt with you seat, your hands, and if you need to, go completely to the walk. Immediately pick it back up. You want them to be slow, but thinking forward at the same time. Taking them into that small circle is bad because if your horse were to slip, you'd be in big trouble. The reason your horse is running is because she is on the forehand. Work on getting canter transition from a good trot, not a running one.

You're hands... I don't know where to start.. And those circles.. I rode a very fast pony, it doesn't help with those tiny circles.. You only learn the pony to stop, not going slow. Try with a bigger circle and DONT stop it... Poor pony

The reins were obviously very loose. Maybe your just jealous. And, not all ponies are the same. So it obviously did help. Just because you can't do it properly doesn't mean i doesnt work. A bigger circle would make it easier for the horse to go fast, so there would be no collection.

"I'm not gonna pick on her.." - You pick on her all the time. Watch your reins - they go from "slack" to "full contact" at each step. Your hands are busy, sea-sawing on her mouth. If she gets whacked in the mouth all the time, she'll start bracing. Maybe you should practice following your horse's head smoothly, as well as calming your hands, before attempting the faster gaits.

I'm sorry, but WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR HANDS? Every step in the trot the horse does she gets yeanked in her mouth because your hands are uncontrollably flying up and down and all over the place. That's why her head is up in the sky most of the time and I suspect that is the also the reason for having english bridle - because the horse would show even more signs of discomfort from your hard hand without the noseband. The horse bucked only because she was told to galop by rider's legs while been yeanked back by the bit. Also, the horse has pretty poor balance to be making such small circles, especially in canter. It sometimes amazes me who gets to call himself/herself "the trainer" these days.

You're seriously a complete idiot. The reason for her having her hands like that, is to stay out of the horses mouth, which she did. She only got onto the horse when it became tence and inconsistent. Also the reason for the horse having her head that high, is because she's obviously an arabian or some type of cross. If you were smart enough and horse educated you would understand that, of course arabs aren't consistently high strung like that, but they are a difficult breed they take tons of time to become a calm, relaxed horse. Also when she bucked if you had decent eye sight at all, you could obviously see she's not in the horses mouth AT ALL. The horse most likely did it from getting frustrated because she's not getting what she wants, or because the horse is still obviously green. Sometimes to get a great result you have to be harsh. She did a great job!

Ok, having a different way of riding has absolutely nothing to do with you being a terrible rider!!! Having a good seat is something a "TRAINER" should have period if you are taking someone's money to train their horse... You can clearly see she almost falls out of the saddle multiple times because she's not sitting deep and she's bouncing out!! And her hands are in the horses mouth constantly! She has no control of her body so bouncing on the horses back and having bad hands is just a bad rider!!!the horse was getting mixed signals trotting cantering didn't know what to do!! So before you make your self sound stupid again you should prolly educate yourself and watch the video closely!! :)

lmfao at the comments on the circles being too small! Well duh, it's meant to be slightly uncomfortable for the horse. The horse will naturally disengage their hindquarters in a small circle, and once they slow down, then you let them go straight as a reward. Obviously, this isn't forever, ideally you do this exercise for 30 mins at a time until the horse goes more slowly. Once the horse is consistently slow at every ride, you won't have to do small circles like these ever again!! That is unless the horse is feeling more fresh. Half halting with a speeding horse will just lead to fights, and bracing, so whoever thinks half halting is the solution to a chronically rushing horse is an IDIOT.

xxlosergotnetxx its not the bit at all...u only need 1 bit..i personally use a loose ring snaffle on my young ones until they r as soft as they can be then i move then on up to hackamore, two-rein, then lastly the finished horse is straight up in the bridle...the way i would help your horse is to teach him to lead by u soft and with a bit of a round in his/her body...i would also get to his hind by sending his hind away from me as he/she leads by me as kind of a safety switch get this very good to wear u dont have to take the slack out and they break over in the hind with 100% willingness...then id move to walking the horse on a nice loose calm rein and taking the hind out a few steps with the front not moving n stop but keep her head flexed towards me until she is soft then release and go on..i would build this till its very reliable then u can show your horse by taking a step at a time no more no less to teach them speed control..you control how fast/slow they walk or trot till they r very willing to do that to...have your horse asking how fast do u want me to go not them telling you this is how fast we r going...by this time u stil havent loaped and when u do loap n the horse loaps very nice n slow for u i wouldnt do anything with my reins id have a nice long looase reing pretty much saying good boy/girl n pet them as well..very key u can nvr do enough rubbing and petting...but lets say your horse wants to take off cause thats what they were taught at the loap id first take them down to a trot nice n calmly cause u dont want them scared of u then slowly ask for the loap again...u may have to take them up to a loap n down a trot a hundred times before they understand but when they do get it ur right there to reward them for a good idea on slowing down in the loap

Yeah, just like you wonder if you shouldn't give your kid painkiller so she learns to tolerate pain, you should try a new bit. Stupid thought. Instead you need to be using more pressure release. This rider is not releaseing in small enough steps for this horse. Many idiots are saying that this horse is ill-mannered. They are not realizing that this horse is trying to comply, but it being told to hold back at the same time. you cannot cue and ask for a slow down at the same time...It would confuse you too, and eventually you would become frusterated. This horse seems to be pysically incapable of slowing at this point in the canter, and needs to be worked with in a round pen. You need to change his mindset. For now, he actually likes working harder. Make slower more rewarding by understanding pressure.

RareEnoughToFind22 i totally agree with u on everything but the last point about likes working harder..every horse would rather be standing still and doing nothing at all..he was just taught to be all high strung and shown that being soft and lazy isnt acceptable...so doing the groundwork at a nice correct walk then itll teach him for in the saddle..a round pen would be ideal but u dont need one for working with horse that knows the halter...and i would only consider a horse halter broke when u can lead them by me onto a trailer with no hesitation

This "training method" will only result in the horse falling in on his shoulder and being generally confused. When your horse doesnt respond to your aid u should repeat it untill he understands. Getting him to do something completely different will just irritate and confuse him. Also maybe one of the reasons he is speeding up is cause u r unbalanced and thrusting ur hands forward. Just saying maybe before u try to train others train yoursellf and ur horse.

That lady can't ride I feel bad for her horse and why the hell would she call herself a trainer if she can't even ride

a true turn shouldn't even show hand movement. This "trainer" is riding in a 2 handed loose ring bit which means that contact can be held with contact and the hands and contact should be so quiet and steady. Also hands shouldn't be used as turn signals...all comes from the body. The horse is throwing her shoulders out in attempt to evade the rider and the buck is from discomfort...not resistance. This video is wrong on rider part.

I want to be able to do all that but if I loosen my reins for a walk/trot in my paddock (I don't have an arena) my horse will bolt. He's 15 hands, 4 and I ride english on a 3 ring gag on the third ring. My trainer told me to do so but I know it's not the bit that controls the horse. I want to change back to a normal snaffle but my mam said "you won't be able to control him then". What should I do? And I don't think I'm allowed to get my horse trained anymore because he was being trained over the summer but I don't feel his training is complete. I think maybe he runs through the bit but he's perfect in an arena (meaning he has no problems behaviour related). Just in a wide space he's...lively. Some opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated but please be kind as this sounds silly but I find this upsetting. Thanks :)

Slowly work your way down. go to the second the second ring on the bit, and once you have good control on that ring you can try a milder snaffle, like a slow twist. Once you can control your horse in that you can go to a regular snaffle. Trust me i say this from personal experience, I had to re train my OTTB who is now almost a perfect Hunter Jumper horse.

My Horse Trigger Stay in the gag if he is truly bolting, not that it will stop him, but it gives you a small chance. Speak to your instructor and ask them to help with bringing your horse down from a canter by using laterals, espicially shoulder-in on a circle. Have a plan for when you go out into wide spaces that keeps you both safe. riding with an older calm horse will help. One of my horses came to me as a confirmed bolter and it has taken three years to settle him mentally enough to even think about wide spaces. This will take time if you and your parents dont want to spend the time, sell him on and get something safer.

Suzie Williams on his own he gets excited but with another horse just walking or whatever he's fine! I've started riding riding again after 5 months its just a small square in the field but its OK for now until the arena is done!

i would get good a groundwork outside in a open soace where they r reliable in taking there hind out with a very soft movement then id walk them with a loose rein n if he decides to try to bolt u can take his hind out to stop him then when he is stopped hold his head til he is soft then u can relase ans walk on n keep doing that untill he doesnt move faster then u r riding...i ride my 4yr old out i na big hay field with nothing more than a loose ring snaffle cause she is prepared n set up for success...that swhat u need is to prepare ur horse and urself for success..n taking the hind out is a safety that i wish i could show alot of ppl that have problem horses

This does not work well I know lots of people using this and they spend more time turning then going straight. Now what does work is consistency in riding meaning when Im riding a young horse i start with my rein hand on there neck and when they speed up I say easy and lift my hand off the neck and start applying rein tension until they drop back down and I drop my hand to the neck I always ride with my hand on the neck when they are doing what they are supposed to this gives the horse a way to tell if they are doing good or not, if you ride like this lady and your hands are all over the place the horse has a hard time knowing what you are trying to tell it, and as far as bridle less riding I do it lots to show off and when I lift my hand what do you know speed change and a little side pressure and I get a full stop spin,

maybe that's all she has? I do too because I don't have a western bridle. No offense but in my opinion, if your not showing and it's not a requirement it doesn't really matter because they do the same thing. Another reason I use an English bridle with my western saddle is because my horse needs the nose band and the English bit, so it's better for me to use the English bridle :)

Western is different from English. English is very strict on posture, while western is much more relaxed and comfortable.

This video is a poor example of horsemanship and this horse should not even be working at the lope yet. Try to get the horse steady and consistent at the walk with steering and not throwing her shoulders out and being unbalanced. Especially the fact that you are riding western saddle and English bridle...not that there is anything specifically wrong with that but to me it's just as confusing as your un-correct instructions...

also before u canter just maybe think bout getting him actually listening to you. Maybe do some proper flat work first (not just trotting around in a circle) If u learn to actually put your hands in and heels back and down he might actually start learning how to work in an outline and engage his hind end. I mean being the horse of a "horse trainer" he should atleast be able to flex. *deep breaths right rant over.... but seriously establish your paces before you try anything else

Letting her break the canter when you are working on it isn't going to help. If she starts out fast little pulls on the bit can help correct with the circles

The reason your horse or pony bucked was because when they are cantering you CAN NOT. Do a circle that small. That is why she bucked. When you are cantering you cannot do a circle that small. Horses do not like that. And be careful when you are trotting you hands were going everywhere.

she's saying all the right things but not doing it at all. you were still hard handed when the horse did what you want which leads to confusion and makes the process longer. the horse will still get it eventually thinking " well it always hurts but i guess it hurts less when i control my rate." but in the process expect to get bucked and have a lot of frustration in your horse. i've seen very well trained horses that are constantly heavy reined so you can do it i'm sure and still call yourself a "trainer," but you are more of a controller of a ticking time bomb than a trainer IMO. the ones who say crap like "i don't know what happened this horse is perfectly trained, known it for years and then it reared over and landed on me, must have had a tooth ache" what happened is your horse had enough of constant ripping and decided it'd rather flip itself on top of you than go on like that...
