How to solve a common Blender GPU timeout render error (windows)

For those who don't know, here's a little trick I've been using for a long time:
Windows has a setting that resets your graphics-card driver if it takes longer than a certain amount of time to finish a calculation. Quite often the default value is way too low for Blender/Cycles GPU rendering, and this causes a lot of crashes in scenes that would otherwise render fine, even on very fast PCs.
This should work at least on Windows 7 and up.

Nice, 2 year old video and still pretty accurate. I’m running blender 2.9 on rtx2080. TdrDelay was already created in my registry but hexadecimal was set to 8. Changed it to decimal and typed 60. That seems to work. Thanks!

That saved my life, finally able to render twice as big on my laptop, in eevee and cycles also doesn't crash. Gonna do more tests, but both values set safe to 5 do not lock the system and GT 750M renders easily over 25MP. Thanks

Bruh it worked. I had no idea what was causing all the crashes. I thought it was from enabling adaptive sampling, openCL nodes, or memory issues but it was just this reg edit trick.

You can also enable Debug Mode in the Nvidia Control Panel if you're running an RTX card. Works like a charm.

If you use this trick, the graphics adapter gets priority over everything. I have the impression that the computer does nothing else than waiting for the graphics adapter to complete its operation. Even Strg-Alt-Del does not work anymore. The keyboard buffer does not work anymore to read any Esc keys. So you will have to reset your computer if you want to stop rendering.

hmm. My keyboard remains responsive, even while it's doing the initial heavy calculations. I tested it at several points in the render process, including on the first tile, and it stops immediately when I hit esc.

Did this trick for blender 2.9 I used 64 bit instead of 32 bit when creating the registry files. Seems to be working. System loads quicker. Still getting time out error in blender. It is a pretty intensive render though. Okay, I did this fix but in addition I had to change my tile size. I was okay at 128 x 128 and samples down to 120. Im running 3gpu's rendering about 6 particle systems plus base meshes and camera animation.

I agree with below comment. This is a software problem that should account for this error. Having said that all software has bugs, and 3d is one of the most demanding on cpu.

I can’t believe there’s actually a fixing for this issue, thanks a lots (works with 2.81a with optix) Tho just curious, what’s the difference in x32 and x64 when adding new in the setting Edit: I notice in the task manager, when I apply this fix, my second gpu has a longer delay, while the first gpu works in a normal way. I have the same card you do GFX 1070 w/8Gig on the board(Blender was only using 4g for some reason so I set it to 8 and enabled disk cache, using ssds that are really fast) but in V3.0 I don't get an error code Blender just winks out and is gone, going to try this, one note is it has never crashed on me before, I bought some rather nice characters on CgTrader and when animating them it crashes. So anyway I'll give it a shot - can't figure out anything else to try so... Thanks.

I upped the TDR value but it didn't stop the full BSOD's (Black Screen Of Death) Very helpful though as a means to rule out such a reason

This is a fix for a many things, not just Blender and even for AMD cards too. This has been an issue for any kind of compute on a GPU. Be it redering a 3d scene, simulating physics, GPU accelerated photogammetry, GPU accelerated AI, etc... any software that uses the GPU to compute can benefit from this fix. The "Pro" drivers for NVIDIA or AMD do not fix this issue, though they should for those who do use their GPU for more than just playing WARZONE or FORTNITE.

After I do this, I have freeze on all system. win10proX64+gf660. For reset to normal (tanx Niels Sönke Seidler 4 link) TdrDelay=2 TdrDdiDelay=5. Just remove keys didn't work.

I wouldn't delete anything necessarily, but if you delete anything you created in the registry editor, nothing should happen, it should be fine. however i would be very careful.

I'm using Blender 2.67...Followed registry edit instructions, Didn't do anything for me (but didn't hurt my windows)...Hitting F12, I do notice it's stuck in slot 1, 'sequence', can't select 'render layer....Maybe this can occur after rendering an animation....and remains stuck in render 'sequence'...because if I start a new file, I can render an image with no problem.

I came across this video as I'm also experiencing this issue while following an Udemy course. I was wondering if the rendering method here is still an option in blender (the way it takes a square off the image and loads it, then moves onto a square adjacent to it) ? I am yet to test if this resolves my issue as it seems to be a hit/miss situation depending on whether it's fresh render after boot-up with not that many background process running.
