Listening to MBV for the first time is like working out a puzzle. At first I thought they used synthesizers and the like, but nope. Just guitars, bass, and drums, with an occasional sampler here and there. After you actually figure out how the band does it by watching live footage, suddenly it makes sense.

They did use synthesisers but not Kevin playing them. I saw them live in 1993, the gig was deafening and I was a drunk student, mind-blowing . I met the two girls in the band as they came off stage through the crowd of 200 students on a mystery venue tour. They were sweet but not good lookers. I only knew 2 songs at the time, I didn't get any album until years later. I wasn't as hip as I thought at the time! The arrogance of youth.

It's basically just a dry, distorted guitar turned up loud. It has the bright, ring-y-ness of a Jaguar or Jazzmaster. If you pay close attention to the guitar, you'll hear that there are likely *no* effects being used. During the louder parts with the lead, one of the guitar tracks may have a fuzz or distortion on it though (maybe a tonebender, nothing that extreme). The high pitched "lead" part, of course isn't guitar at all, it's probably the sampler Kevin used.

I've tried fuzz factory. Gets it around 70% there. deviever "Godzilla" might get closer. Since it's a dual fuzz would make sense with the bridge being more louder and abrasive. Other thing I suspect is the supersonic fuzz gun. Hard to say considering stacking. Too poor to try out myself :P

@JulianA-tr6pt 6 жыл бұрын
@@julianward5436 Was gonna mention the Supersonic Fuzz Gun. I have one I built, it can get close (could probably record it sometime), but in the recording, there's a cleaner overdriven guitar playing along with the fuzzed out one. As with pretty much all MBV songs, it's hard to recreate with one guitar. This is presumably why people use so much reverb trying to sound like them when they barely do themselves.

Hey there, super cool video. Just received a sneak attack and am messing around with it and stumbled across this rad video. I was wondering though, does the holy grail max sound anything at all like the cathedral? It doesn't so much in this video, so I'm wondering if the reverse setting on this sounds better. I had a cathedral for a while and I just found the thing sounded waaay too brash an unpleasant, or far too washed out to hear. I ended up selling it and I bought an alesis midiverb II which I love. I have the midiverb on a separate loop and just keep it on at all times and bring it into my signal chain starting at the very beginning and it sounds really awesome for reverse reverb--I use a ls-2 line selector for this. However, the midiverb does have some drawbacks...mainly in that it really sounds best with higher frequencies. That's cool and all, but I really wish I could get it to sound awesome with lower frequencies. Also, the presets and the times they offer are cool, but I wish I had a knob to turn to set the timing of the reverse function. do you have any thoughts on any of this? Do you still use the holygrail max? I have tried the zoom pedal (70-cdr i think?) but I found it sounded a bit lo-fi. Not a bad budget option my any means, but I still preferred the alesis midiverb. I also have a keeley realizer pedal, and it sounds a lot like the alesis, but it's kind of hard to hear. I wish it had an input signal control like the actual rack unit does. Again, thanks for the video, this was really helpful. Stellar sounds.
@pedalpartners
@pedalpartners 4 жыл бұрын
thanks man. the sneak attack is a real treat. a lot of fun sounds to find in there. i haven't really tried the cathedral in comparison tbh. i really do love the reverse on the max though. i would describe it as a more defined kind of sound, probably like the cathedral. but again if you turn the blend up you can get something washier. other reverse reverbs i really like are the one on the loomer, which will be the same as your realizer & the one on the digitech rv-7 which is a lexicon based reverb. i would definitely recommend checking out the rv-7 & polara. & also the supernatural - no reverse, but some great shoegaze sounds.

Can the Big Muff Pi w/ tone wicker be utilized for the middle fuzz effect or is the version Billy Corgan uses (OP Amp) the only viable Big Muff? I have a Walrus Audio Ironhorse II I might try to sub because it has a sort of compressed “rat fuzz” for lack of a better term.

The earthquaker and harmonix are both reverb pedals? I'm just not sure what the purpose of the earthquaker is? I'm just trying to understand shoe gaze cause I'm really enjoying the genre but all the pedals can be hard to follow. Is one pedal for reverse reverb while the other is normal?
@pedalpartners
@pedalpartners Жыл бұрын
the earthquaker is a (discontinued) fuzz & the ehx is a reverb. we've actually made a fuzz pedal specifically for shoegaze now (more stock in a few weeks) www.lifeisunfair.co.uk/product/violet-oscillation-shoegaze-fuzz will be making a reverse reverb soon too! my fave reverse reverbs rn are the alesis midiverb ii (rack unit), red panda context & digitech rv7. defo have a look around the channel for more tips & tricks, let me know if you need more help :)
