1:35 I have a feeling that has to do with the sound the ball makes that empty "clack" of a weak ball hit.

As like Richard Weber, I too am an older bowler and his translation from old school to new lingo is fairly accurate ... back then instead of Shim we used Hold, Push, Skid or Slide. Plaque, which is commonly a flat piece of wood with names on it, is used a take off from the term Flat, which is when the ball comes in early or late into the pocket with little to no drive and the hit is flat, leaving a seven for us lefties or ten for the righties, with the 4 or 6 either dying in the gutter or flying straight out to the side of the 7 or 10 pins, unlike a ringing 7 or 10 in which the ball is late and has plenty of movement and rotation, throwing the 4 or 6 pin out and around the 7 or 10, the flat 7 or flat 10 is sometimes also called a weak 7 and weak 10, or quitter 7 and quitter 10, because there just isn't enough power to rebound off the sidewall and carry the corners. Someone mentioned Stone or Stoned, that is when the ball drives too hard and leaves a pin that seemingly contradicted the laws of physics, by remaining standing like a stone in stonehenge ... this typically happens to the 8 or 9 pin. Dig was referred to as Hook, Catch, Bite, Sucking Up, or Coming up, all of which were common to hear the affected bowler shouting to the bowling gods to bring the skidding ball back to the pocket. Cliffed was called over/under, wet/dry, reversed blocked, or just reversed, when shortened in conversation. Kyle's China theory is a good one since it was called a walled shot back in the day, along with House shot, Blocked shot, or Grooved, but the Great Wall of China would represent the mother of all walled shots. Missed by a House was either Bricked or Flagged, but missing by a house must be a much bigger miss. Berries could be like what Paul Stokes said, Buries, like buried in the pocket, we always termed it as being Dialed In, Lined Up, In The Groove or Automatic. Funny how the terminology changes but the meanings are almost identical. Anything over a turkey was a bagger, 4 bagger, 5 bagger, etc. now, thanks to Randy Pedersen and Rob Stone we have Ham Bone and Six Pack. Too cool

I suggest that "plaque" may have developed and evolved (or been misheard) from "clack", which is what we used to say when someone's ball hit the rack in the right place, but with the power of a marshmallow.

I bowled in the late 70's when roth, holman, anthony were bowling tournaments, plastic and rubber bowling balls only........I'll convert your new terms to the old school so we can understand them. Shim: that was actually a piece of cardboard you put on the roller of the oil machine to stop the oil from being applied causing a easy condition (wall) which will be later. Berries: No such thing w/o taking lots of drugs. Dig: Hook or Bite. Plaque: Flat hit or are you carrying a purse. Aced: We called throwing a ball perfect was 'Tits" or nutted...don't know why?. Cliffed: Over/under condition or reverse block. Messenger: Same word but back in those days we didn't see a lot of messengers due to less speed and technology.China: Walled or Blocked lanes. Hit a house......This was either a brick or what you did after you drank all night on your way home. Just ask your grandpa, he will confirm these social conversions.

Haven’t bowled in competition for 20 years, but this is what we used to say. Instead of plaque, we always said you threw a pumpkin. Of course there’s always DOA. Instead of dig we always said “Left rudder”.

"Berries" is probably the pg term for when someone can't miss and is striking a lot people would say they got the "nuts".

For berries I always just say that someone is “in their bag.” Like if you’re bowling perfect then you’re in your bag

I always hear “Stone” instead of plaque. I’m sure a lot of the terminology is regional though. 🤷♂️

Hey, just saw this vid and thought..."berries?"... Why not "buries?" Because if you are hot, you are burying every shot as well as your opponent!

What about comments like 'oh shit' or 'how did I leave a pocket 4-10?' Or my absolute favorite....'Jersey' Jersey - the term us lefties use for a strike from the opposite side.

it must sound so confusing to someone who isnt playing bowling at all. "when you want the ball to slide or hold, you say shim" - like, just talk to the ball for whatever reason. maybe it will change something. all of a sudden bowling balls have speech assistance.
