How to Speak like a Colombian! Different Accents from Colombia
In today's video I will teach you about the different accents from Spain. We will look at the accents from the Bogotá, Colombia's largest city, Medellin and the Paisa region, Pasto in the border with Ecuador, and we will look at the Caribbean Coast of Colombia to listen to the Colombian accent.

Colombian accents broken down by a Colombian!
Today I am going to be looking at accents from my country Colombia.
I am going to explore the rolo accent from Bogota, the paisa accent Medellin, the costeño accent from the coast and the accent from Pasto! AKA pastuso accent.
Let’s get started with the most beautiful and perfect accent the rolo accent.
In case you don’t know the accent from the sophisticated city of Bogota AKA rolo accent is the best spoken spanish in the world. Of course this is the accent that I speak, and it’s elegant as elegant can be.
Kiubo parce. ¿Cómo está?
A lot of people in Bogota claim they don’t have an accent, but so do people in Chile, Mexico and everywhere else, so yeah. We do have an accent.
In fact we have many accents depending on your social class. Like we call gomelos people who are rich and high high and they speak like this. Hola uy no huevon a mi no me gusta ir por alla
The Bogotanian accent is diverse but it is characterized by a hard y and ll, so instead of calle we say calle a soft j, we don't go as hard as Spaniards or Mexicans with Cojones, adn people say we have a slight accent at the end of sentences. You just for yourself. Hola me llamo Diego soy de Colombia.
Now we move to Paisalandia which includes cities like medellin, manizales, pereira, armenia. The accent of people like J Balvin and J Valdez.
Paisas are one of the most attractive and representative accents of Colombia. I am going to do my best to imitate it. They go like Eh ave maria pues ome. En serio no joda. Their accent has a rhythm like they are complaining or singing or something like that. Practice with me. Nanananana. Instead of tu or usted for you they use vos. Vos como estas? But Paisas are recognized not only for their very musical accent but also for their expressions which are like the famous. Eh ave maria pues ome. Kind of like oh my god. Hagale pues. Let’s do this. Mi’jo mi’ja. This literally means my son or my daughter and it is used among friends. Paisas also add pues at the end of almost every sentence. Pues pues pues. Que paso pues? Nada pues? Entonces pues. Vamonos pues.
Pasto. For some reason that I will never understand the rest of Colombia loves to make fun of people from Pasto. They have silly jokes like… Porque los pastusos se sientan atrás en el cine. Porque el que rie de ultimo rie mejor. We like to think they are not the smartest people. The historical reason is that pasto was very different from the rest of Colombia and didn’t want independence from Spain because it just was not convenient for them. Bolivar tried to invade the city and to build a propaganda campaign against them called them dumb and that persists today and becasue most people are of indigenous accents and Colombia still has a lot of work to do against racism and discrimination of our indigenous people. Anyways, their accent sounds very similar to Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andean accent is less musical and more flat. Aquí los pastusos comemos muchos cuys. They are also known for expressions like achichay which means it’s too cold and it’s always cold in Pasto and ahisito no mas. Over there please. They make almost everything diminutive.
Now we have the acento costeno from Carlos Vives and Shakira… Wait, actually shakira speaks with an Argentinian accent when she was dating the argentinian, actually she speaks with a Spanish accent because she dates Pique now. The Costeno accent is caribbean. They are relaxed so they drop a lot of their vowels. Instead of s at the end of words they aspire the sand make them into almost an H. Hola como estas? Como te llama.
They usually use tu more than any other Colombian would. Tu como estas chico and they love the expression Eche no joda when they are upset. If you ask a costeño to whisper they still will be louder than a Bogotanian or a Pastuso screaming. Their accent is much more lous and animated.

The accent of Cali, caleño. Cali is the third largest city in Colombia so this is also another common accent. My boyfriend is a caleño! It has a combination of different parts of Colombian accents as described in this video. Vos and sos are common features shared with the Paisa accent, Risaralda (the department that contains Pereira) borders Valle del Cauca (the department that contains Cali) and my boyfriend has an expressive accent, kind of sing-song. You can also notice that caleños often drop their S like costeños. The different accents of Colombia are so interesting, thank you for this video!

Something I find interesting and unique about the Paisa accent is the way they pronounce the letters c and a together in words like calle, casa or nunca. To me it sounds like they make they CA noise more in the back of their throat instead further up in the mouth, almost like a clicking noise.

You should do some research on where the paisa accent comes from. It actually comes from (Valencia) Spain. When the first inhabitants of the paisa region came to the "valle de aburrá", they had little or no touch with other regions so they conserved their accent.

I'm from the Philippines but sad to say, we don't speak Spanish language anymore. Maybe some of our words can be understood as Spanish but the spelling is different and some letters are changed. The only Spanish-speaking people in my country are from Zamboanga (Southern part of the Philippines) and they call it Chavacano. We identify them as the Latinos/Latinas of Southeast Asia. If you'll be able to hear them speak, they still have the Filipino accent and one of the major difference to native Spanish is the grammar structure.

I’ve always noticed that Colombians, particularly bogotanos and paisas, tend to have almost a percussive pronunciation with their T, P, and K sounds. Like there’s a lot of pressure put behind those consonants, which is something I’ve never heard from other Spanish speakers. I’m wondering if Colombians are conscious of this.

if you have visited the Basque regions of Spain and areas in or near Santander the accent of "very Paisa" speakers are very similar. During the conquest of Colombia the Spanish of these regions, the Basque in particular never left Medellin basin. In many ways the Spanish spoken in Medellin is closer to Spanish (or Castillian) spoken in Spain at the time of the conquistador then what is now associated with Spaniards. this is largely because the Spanish of Spain has evovled greatly over the last 300 years of constant regional migration whereas the Paisa accent has remained constant. A similar thing happened in Costa Rica where the Spanish settlers concentrated in the central part of the country with very little migration out of the region to the coasts.

@@porscheoscar Not true, Paisa accent is a mix of many different accents from people who came from other parts of the world. Basques did mainly settle the Antioquia Area but in the early 19th century there was a huge influx of Middle Easter people which added to their phonetics. Furthermore, Basques at that time and today even consider themselves different from Spaniards and Spanish or Castillian was their and still is their second language. so no, it was never the closest thing to Castillian As Basques’ main language was Vasco or Euskara. and they had already a different accent and slang as what Castilians had back in Spain. Catalans settled along the northern coast and thats why you see a lot of Catalonian last names. Although their accent is closer related to the Caribbean accent than what the rest of Colombia speaks. Bogota had an influx of all types of Iberians, Specially Andalusians, Galician And People from Proper Castille And Leon but not Madrid. As most people from Madrid went back to Spain. Andalusians are the main contributors to Latin American way of speaking as most people migrated were from there. Hence why there is no “TH” Sound when pronouncing Cs or Zs which they still do in Andalusia. So in Bogota you’d hear a mix of a bunch of accents from spain but mainly andalusians. Which became the standard in colombian politics back then. Hence why it sounds so boring compared to other accents.

Omggg that coast accent is terrible, sounded more like Venezuelan and Cuban. Have you ever been to the coast? 🤦🏽‍♀️. Te lo dice una costeña ofendida jajajjajajaha y no todos los costeños hablan igual. Pero suerte ✌🏽
