I've always had a marked speaking ability. My preschool teacher said I should be a politician, because of my leadership and speaking ability. During childhood, I had few friends, so I would speak at length to myself as if there were another person there, repeating and rephrasing different subjects as I went along. I would even imagine their response, at length, and respond as if it had really been said. I still do this. It's exactly the exercise he starts explaining around 9 minutes. It works. When you speak well, it comes across within a sentence or two. Combined with a groomed appearance, appropriate eye contact, and physical attractiveness if you're lucky to have it, people will respect you and remember what you say much, much more than they do the average person. It signals IQ, the number one predictor of success. It is seriously economically valuable. It comes with nothing but simple practice.

In addition, when I hear someone say 'utilize', that's a red flag to me, that they are still trying to learn how to speak more effectively. I suggest the the better word is 'use'. Thank you so much, Joseph! I'm gonna join this journey with you to becoming an effective communicator!

I understand your point, but the reality is that there's a general trend towards simplification in all aspects of life. This is why we communicate the way we do, and it's unlikely to change anytime soon, as there seems to be little concern for it. Utilizing a simplified vocabulary does not equate to a lack of intelligence. Language serves primarily as a bridge to communicate meaning (content) rather than form.

Yeah, I feel the tone of this video was a bit condescending towards simplified vocabulary. I don’t like it either but it’s also just the way people are right now

I saw something (could be bs - I saw it on the internet) that said people read, speak and write at a 5th grade level and in order to “relate” to them you need to make sure you’re doing the same as a brand.

Having had to learn a second language as an adult, I cannot understate the importance of speaking out loud. You can read and listen all you would like but speech has a quality all of its own.

I agree… Your whole being of thought rides on the words you choose and how you say them!!! My family…. My Dad was all about enunciation

Being a journalist, host and speaker I liked this approach - new and fresh. Cudos. Food for thought - metaphors are often more clear than ordinary words . Bucket is not the best example as a bad word because it actually functions as a metaphor that enhances the understanding. Assemble is a finer word - probably used in higher status -but not necessariyly as efficient because the brain has to travel to a place of understanding of what assemble means. Notice your example of steve jobs ascending and he uses the hand - also a metaphor - school of thought - also a metaphor

This video also illustrates how drastic wordplay is when trying to convey an image of yourself to other people whether that be charisma, intelligence, or another detail, wordplay maybe the most important aspect of expression
