Yes, a great video but it has to be said that Mexican Spanish is the most important Spanish in the world as Mexico is largest country where spanish is spoken and Mexico is where most media (TV (Series, soap operas, programs), movies and music are produced and distributed to more than 140 countries everyday. I lived in Australia and I saw Mexican soap operas in public TV as well as soccer games.

It's funny, but I was speaking with a girl from Peru yesterday, and we switched to Spanish for a few minutes. Well, Spanish peppered with some English. My daughter loved it, because she had never seen her daddy actually speak in another language with other people in public. Mind you, aprendí español en la calle. I never took it in school. I took French. Yeah, I'm that old. She's first learning Spanish in 4th grade (some since Kindergarten), and I thought it would be fun to show her some of your videos. She thought they were very cool, and is now practicing more and more. Her pronunciation needs a boatload of work (the vowels), but she's getting there. Thanks for this channel!

At that age the chance is pretty big that she can develop a native-like accent. I have a friend that moved to my country at 13 and he sounds just like everyone else! I stil can't imagine that he spent his first 13 years so far away from my country judging by how well he speaks! It's like it's his mother tongue. I really suggest you further stimulate your daughter to learn because being able to speak and understand multiple languages is a blessing. Especially in the US, I suppose, where the majority is monolingual.

One thing Nate didn’t mention that I found was huge huge to help with my accent and learning Spanish is reading. Watch Mexican KZbin videos or just videos in Spanish and then go to the comments and just read the comments. Go online and search something up and just read articles even if you have no idea what it is saying, you need to get that fluidity down with reading entire sentences and paragraphs and articles because if you just say the a couple or few words all the time as a response, you will never learn how to get fluid with speaking Spanish and that fluidity helps you relax and be able to pronounce words better and feel more comfortable when speaking. I do not enjoy reading at all but I read whatever I can in Spanish even if I don’t understand it and I can genuinely read Spanish better than most my Mexican friends, even the ones from Mexico where Spanish is their first language.

Your accent is quite good for a gringo (probably because you started very young, as a child I would guess, which is the key in developing a native-like accent). And if you want to sound even more native, work on your Bs, Ds and Gs between vowels or before L. Change them from occlusive sounds (or stops, where the air stops coming out for a second when you make the sound) to fricative sounds (air comes out constantly when you are making the sound). For example, when you said "hablar," the B sounded like an occlusive, which sounds non-native/gringo to the ear. Try to keep your lips slightly open (almost like a kissy face) so that the air comes out when you are pronouncing the B before the L. The B should sound more like a V. Great job!

I've been speaking Spanish for over 30 years and living in Mexico City for 20 years, and no matter how well I speak the local dialect of Spanish, people often comment that they know I'm a foreigner because of my "accent." I have light blonde hair, blue eyes, and a very "foreign" body type, shall we say, so I honestly don't think it's my "accent" that's giving me away. When I speak over the phone, people never comment that I have an accent or even ask me where I'm from. I really think that one's physical appearance influences the amount of "accent" others will perceive them to have. What do you think?

What is always important to explain is that, as in any other country and language, there are different levels of Spanish in Mexico: from popular Spanish spoken by people with a low or medium-low education level, to Spanish spoken by people with a low or low educational level. medium or medium-high. For each level of Spanish, there is some use of structures and vocabulary. For example, in neighborhood Spanish with a low or medium-low level of education, words like "chido" (cool, nice) or "chingón" (very good) are used a lot. The use of certain words will show your level of education as well. Therefore, when it comes to surrounding yourself with friends to learn Spanish, you should also consider the educational level of your friends. There is nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with friends with a low or medium-low educational level, but you should be aware that the level of Spanish you will learn will reflect that level of education in one way or another. My recommendation is that you have friends of different educational levels so that you can learn different types of Spanish and can then use different levels in different circumstances. If you are invited, for example, to a dinner with people with a high educational level and when you speak Spanish you say "chido" or "chingón", then people may think that your Spanish is actually of a low or medium-low educational level, creating a dissonance. It is important then to understand that there is not just one type of Mexican Spanish. There are many levels of Spanish and there are also many Mexican accents. An accent from northern Mexico is not the same as an accent from central Mexico, nor is an accent from the center the same as an accent from the south. It's exactly the same as other countries (in the case of the United States it would be like comparing the East Coast accent of people from New York to the South accent of people in Texas). What would you say is the "American" accent?. The same happens in Mexico. So then there is no such thing as a "perfect Mexican accent." The references you say refer to "perfect pronunciation", not "perfect accent". My recommendation is to always leave the accent until the last. If you are learning Spanish, worry more about learning grammar well, the use of gender in adjectives (this is the main nightmare of English speakers), verb conjugations, and above all standard vocabulary (not necessarily Mexican).

I'm Mexican and I've learned English for a few years and I can confirm that your spanish is so good! Most of the americans sound like they're just saying Spanish words with their own language. I dunno why but when I speak English I sound like a Filipino 💀

I'm Mexican and yeah, English has 20 different vowel sounds and spanish just has 5, they even are just short flat sounds, if you see a vowel, there's just one sound, people from other countries tend to make more than one and I think that's a pretty simple mistake to fix. I actually think that's the most important part of speaking right and not sounding like a "Greeeeengaou".

You nailed it, yes, that's the key to a native spanish pronunciation. Straight forward with the vowels and the "r" sound make it stronger cause in english it is too subtle

1 note to add to this video we have many different accents, it all depends on the state you are in, Jalisco, Mexico City, Durango, Sinaloa, etc. but the most normal and easy accents are those from the center of the country (Jalisco, Puebla, Colima, Veracruz, etc.) Those are accents with fewer mannerisms

“Si te haya gustado” is definitely Mexican Spanish. In Spain, present subjunctive is never used with “si”. It would be “si te ha gustado”. Also, while “si puedas” is perfectly acceptable in Mexico, it would sound wrong to a Spaniard (as they would expect to hear “si puedes”). When I was recently in Mexico, I just substituted “tío” with “güey”, “coger” with “agarrar” or “tomar” and “guay” with “chido” or “padre”, and I got along famously with the Mexicans I spoke with. Although they would look at me funny when I would say “thervetha” instead of “cerveza”. I’m from the US, but I spent enough time in Spain to pronounce certain c's and z's as "th" ... so I seemed to be a gringo with a Spain Spanish accent.

We follow the same rules established by the RAE (real academia Española). Si te haya gustado not only isn’t Mexican spanish, is bad spanish period. Your assertion that bad spanish is perfectly acceptable in Mexico is just wrong.

@@madmex123 I apologize if I was wrong on that point. I’m not an expert in Mexican Spanish. I will say that on Mexican TV shows and in regular conversations with some Mexicans I know, I’ve encountered many situations where “si” is paired with the present subjunctive (si pueda hacerlo …). And also things like “No sé si venga” pop up. That is NEVER heard in Spain. First of all, if a subjunctive is to be used at all with “si”, it would be si + the past subjunctive in a hypothetical statement, like “si tuviera mucho dinero, me compraría un coche”. And saber would not trigger the present subjunctive in any case I know of. However, “si supiera el problema, intentaría resolverlo” is completely correct in Spain. I just made the incorrect assumption that si + present subjunctive was acceptable in Mexico.
