Do you have the shopping portal Rakuten in the UK? We have it in the US and you can convert your cash back into MR points at a rate of 100 points per $1 spent. I have earned over 100k MR points in 2023 alone from this.

Haven't heard about this, so looked it up just now. The portal itself is available in the UK but looks like you can't collect MR points. US generally offers more options though when it comes to rewards, including higher earning rates and sign up bonuses.

Is it worth to upgrade from the gold card to the platinum card, maybe just to try it out for the year?

If you already have the Gold card, it's really down to how useful the additional Platinum benefits are to you (since sign up bonuses are off the table now). Trying to put myself in your shoes, I would be tempted to go from Gold to Platinum for some time to see how the additional benefits work out for me (mainly the unlimited lounge access , dining credits and hotel benefits, which I personally find quite valuable) but only because I'd be reasonably sure I'd actually use these benefits quite frequently. On the other hand, Gold has a much better MR points earning. Do keep in mind that from October Amex is no longer doing prorated refunds on the annual fees, so if you do decide to try the Platinum card, it will have to be for a full year.

I have a corporate platinum Amex so get unlimited free lounge access. Is it better for me to apply for a personal platinum or a gold Amex?

I assume you also get other travel benefits through the corporate card (FHR, hotel status, travel insurance)? In that case all that's left are the credits (dining and HN) which alone don't seem to justify the annual fee. I'd personally go for the Gold card.
