Everything you've said NOT to do in this video, I've been doing. Awwww MAN. I split firewood for my wood stove(mostly oak) and for about 8 years; while using a $20 splitting maul and $4 wedge, I'd split through my Knotts. I've DESTROYED a dozen wedges and probably 3 mauls now. Ever since watching your videos and listening when you say IGNORE THE KNOTS, I've stopped wasting time and split more wood. I would work the same round for about 20-30 minutes just because it has knots before. THANKYOU, my time has been cut down to just a few minutes for several rounds. I can't even get into not splitting the sides but instead putting the wedge DEAD CENTER. Sheesh.

The most difficult wood to split that I've had the misfortune to work with was Elm. It has really twisty interlocking grain and consequently is resistant to splitting. My brother and I at 10 & 12 years old were given the chore to split the 2 big trees that my dad and uncle felled. We waited until the temperature got down to 20 below and had to use steel wedges and sledge hammers. Axes were used just to cut the stringy grain when we tried to pull the split pieces apart. No wonder I have arthritis in my old age.

That balsam is a lot like the Norwegian Spruce we have here in Sweden. The tree can be 90 feet tall and still have live bones all the way to the ground. And I'm talking 6 or 8 knots every 6 inches along the trunk. It is BRUTAL to split with an axe. A 30 inch round of hard birch is a piece of cake by comparison. Buckin', the harp on the "Woodman" song is among the best I've heard over the last 50 years or so. We need more of that on another song. ;)

When I lived in CA, I had a wood man come to my place to take out a bad tree and cut it for firewood. He cut it down and cut the trunk into full bolts. He came back the next day with an axe that was like a kitchen knife - thin and sharp. He went down the tree walking on one side and taking several wacks at each. It split like nothing I'd seen. Another guy in the mountain valley had an axe that had spreaders on each side that as the axe went in, the spreaders inside of the blade would pivot out and spread the wood apart. I don't do much axe work anymore - turning 72. Do have my saws and take care of trees and limbs.

Welcome to the new subscribers and I hope you all had a great day. Great tips, Buckin'! For the discussion about people saying: come out here and bang some hard wood... I've got some oak around here that is way easier to split than the pine (fir) that's laying around, simply because of the knots.
