How to spool line on Alvey Reel

Spooling line on your Alvey reel is important. This is the way to do it right. You will have a lot less line problems and tangles.

🎣 I also turn my mono line around the spool three times, then I tie my knot properly. The line will not slip on spool. I found that I have to pull the line from side to side as I tighten the knot down to the spool, as I had snap offs when I didn't. That is because the spool hub diameter is wide. I don't tie over loop dodgy unreliable knots, as I have seen, 🎣

But when you cast it comes off the side of the reel and adds a twist each cast?

Great tips , You can also use hot water(not boiling) helps stretch the line when new. I use Platypus Platinum mono ideal line for any ALVEY reel.

Yes that’s right warm or even hot water on mono. Helps it lay more supple. I Just kept it very basic. Cheers

Lick plain type alleys had a 650c green one caught some big fish on it I use 20lb torque line still got some never had a problem with line twist never use a top swivel at all good line spooling helps great video got heaps of tackle should of worked in 5he tackle industry but work in realesaste stressful job that's why I fish.

@@crf80fdarkdays Alvey have stopped manufacturing. They only have enough stock to sell until Feb 2023, then its all over for the Brand!

On the older Alvey reels, aside from going to the bait shop reel servive area and telling them "Fill'er up!", how do you determine the line capacity? For example, a Model 36 from the 1950's? Nothing on the Internet when I search.

Hi Steve Regardless of the Alvey being a shallow spool or deep spool fill up your reel to within half a cm from the edge of the spool. Take into account that you can still cast a long way with your Alvey even when half empty unlike a spinning reel.

I always forget to shove the knot back against the spool ! Any preference for mono for an Alvey for the beach and estuary- ie stiffer or more supple ? I was using berkley trilene for the beach as it had a hard coating but was still reasonably limp and the old Maxima green for the estuary , these days usually platypus lo stretch . ian bertenshaw hi Ian preference for mono off the beach can be subject to opinion. I still prefer a fairly tough mono. When the kelp is around and you might be fishing close to rock at the end of a beach. Although a softer mono like platypus is good. Otherwise Tortue is suitable all round mono.

Use a good ball-bearing swivel...not a barrel swivel...to attach your rigs.
