Meh even gatekeeping a genre is kinda stupid tbh. There's certain bands and songs that I will never grow tired of but the unfortunate reality is that if a music genre is to improve over time it needs to change and if the genre sticks to the same old thing forever and the fans are pushing everything and everyone away that tries anything different the music and the attitudes of the fans overall will begin to get kind of pretentious and annoying.

Dude, I don't even like any Black Metal outside of Early Bathory, which is just chromatic Hardcore Punk, really. First wave stuff doesn't sound close to what's established today post-2nd wave (Mayhem onward). Anyway, if you read Ekeroth's 'Swedish Death Metal' you'll find that the Black Metal community is very elitist, socially awkward, mentally unstable and from privileged lives. Their gatekeeping came from a psycho kid who judged bands' 'trve kvltness' based on their contradiction to established norms of more popular extreme music. Now, Black Metal is the most popular and largest draw for high-privileged white kids to feel cool about. It's really wack to me and hope y'all weirdos just stay with it and leave Death Metal and all of Punk alone. Cheers.@@kastenbrustarmory6907

When you have a conversation just tell em you are new to it, I am more than positive that another fan would be more than happy to tell you all he/she knows and take you to school. Nothing wrong with it. You would be surprised on how much respect you can gain by saying, "I really dont know " and be open to learning more. Dont lie about it.

I really enjoy quite a large amount of genres in metal including black metal. I have gained quite a lot of knowledge over the years. However am i the only one that puts an entire bands discography on shuffle and lets it play throughout a workshift, driving, autopilot duties, etc? I know i like the songs i can tell different albums based on record quality, sound, style and so on.. but more often then not i cant name songs or albums from an artist unless i delibrately study and read off every song and album as they play. Its so much information.. most of the time when asked which songs or albums i like i usually describe the album art bc im a visual learner and i remember artworks far easier than the sometimes painfully long or complicated titles of albums and songs. I know im not a poser since i genuinely enjoy the music, however i will most likely always fail these "tests" unless i basically make flash cards or a song stands out so much that i revisit it multiple times.

Also, understand that people, mostly younger ones, make friends before acquiring a taste for a music genre and its scene. And since visual is the first thing you are exposed to and the easiest to understand, people will have the look way before the knowledge. People want to fit in, I have never met a real poser in my life (not saying they don't exist), just various degrees of beginners and casuals. Personally I bought two band shirts just a few weeks/months after listening my first metal songs, I was 12 so yeah, normal impulsive behavior, but I'm sure some lighter headed and impulsive grown-up could do the same, lashing on them could very well be considered okay gatekeeping to some, be careful. Plus if KZbin taught me something, it's that being questioned by strangers on the street can make your mind go numb and you can forget well known informations. "fun fact" + small rant, I didn't bought another band merch in like 18 years, but now all of my shirts are from a different band, I take them at gigs if possible, but it's usually only tour merch which I dislike... Please, bands, bring also simpler stylized merch for people that don't want 50 shirts of the same band, I'd rather give you the full money, but store ones are often nicer. The rest of my clothes are extremely normal brandless shit. (except my Gojira hoodie, because Gojira is life, more people should know about Gojira)

@icankillbugs True, but I was exaggerating, because I meant more like subgenres of subgenres. Like for instance, blackened death metal and traditional black metal kind of splits hairs, though I do understand the difference it gets blurred, especially when some bands incorporate several different styles. I also don’t like it when a band that goes outside of the boundaries of their subgenre and get excluded by Orthodox gatekeepers. it may be verging on a different genre at some point, but it seems pointless to get too much into semantics when it means that expanding ones artistic scope is discouraged. For instance, I respect and cherish the unique character of traditional black metal, but don’t think it’s fair to exclude certain bands like Dimmu Borgir, Rotting Christ, or Behemoth that originated in or still identify with black metal. As for my bad recollection of album and song names, I chalk that up to my overfondness of the halflings leaf.

As someone with dyslexia I can only remember some band names, so I just show people my playlist & let them scroll through to see what bands/music I listen to.

Thank youuuii!!! I was trying to remember them recently to find on Spotify and the fucking name had permanently escaped me. This was months ago. I thought I was fucked forever. Not the first time this has happened to me lol

I was once introduced to a dude by someone at work who knew we both liked metal. So obviously being curious to find out more about him, I asked the guy what bands he liked, but weirdly never actually got an actual answer. I just got ‘complicated ones’ which was the closest thing to an answer he gave me. Am still pissed about it to this day... fuckin’ poser 😠

I'm like this with horror movies. I go to shows and see these fresh out of Hot Topic dudes covered in Michael Myers tats and they've never seen 90% of the movies I've seen. I always hear "no but I WANT to see it"

Most of the time you can spot posers by their overall outfit, but you still shouldn't be too judgy right away
@HateChimps1 Жыл бұрын
Using the phrase judgy is pretty fucking stupid.
