I think many people kinda misunderstood the video here. It says 'the most unique...", which doesn't necessarily mean "the best". Gaahl is a fantastic vocalist, but there are others more unique than him. Imo, the vocalist of Inquisition sucks ass, but yeah, he's unique.

Nice list, but not mentioning Attila Csihar feels off... Yes, many would say Mayhem is overrated or whatever, but I think that Attila's approach is unique - especially considering how early they began recording together. Neige from Alcest. You can argue that their stuff nowadays isnt black metal anymore, but he has a quite unique screaming style. The most extreme Ive heard of him was Peste Noire - Dueil Angoisseus. These vocals are absolutly insane and very unique. But even his more "regular" screaming is very recognisable. I instantly recognised his vocals in Saor - Forgotten Paths without knowing that he is featured in this album.

And another recommendation for very unique Black Metal vocals is Ellende. Ellende does most of the time pretty normal Black Metal vocals. But sometimes they do really unique stuff. I never heard anything like Ellende - Scherben the part after the Niezsche quote: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXupfptqhNyej80 Every second scream there is so unique to me. It doesnt even sound that human anymore. It sounds like a totured wild animal. I fucking love it.

Came here just to mention Graav. His vocals, along with Nocturno Culto’s, are the epitome of the Black Metal style. It doesn’t get more grim than those two. They both sound incredibly natural and authentic, as if they’re not performing, and I believe it’s partly due to their delivery and not just their sound - very powerful. The other vocalists you mentioned are great also. I’ll throw in Torog of Behexen on By the Blessing of Satan specifically: utterly and hellishly insane and grim in their own right.

I know they're well known, but no Varg, no Satyr, no Attila Csihar, no Garm, no Gaahl etc.? They're still pretty unique in their vocals. Anyway, Rainer Landfermann on Dictius Te Necare did the most insane vocals I've ever heard in BM. Glad he's back with a solo album, and still can do it.

Dude I'm trying so hard not to argue with the Mortuus fans in the other comments. They're uttering total nonsense saying Mortuus is better and blah blah blah... Legion's ambition, his spirit and the way he fit the lyrics into the rhythm of the music was unmatched. Including the live shows! Baptism by fire, for example; listen to that song live, back to back... Mortuus just says words, screaming. Legion believes in the narrative he's telling and he comes so close to make the audience believe it!

So glad Famine from KPN made it on the list, if even briefly, he has perhaps my favorite BM vocals, so unique, with his high pitched shrieks more common in their older material and the style mentioned in this video, where every word is almost spat out horrifically. I really enjoy Déhà's work on albums like 'Cruel Words' and 'A Fleur de Peau'. I don't think that those albums may qualify as "black metal" for the purists (more post/black or shoegaze perhaps, though I don't think that really matters) but his vocal range is quite unique. He has an incredible amount of bands, projects and collaborations going on by the way, for anyone interested in checking him out. The other one that brings joy to my ears is Dany Tee from "Los Males del Mundo". Their album "Descent Towards Death" is incredible, especially for the intro from "The seventh seal" film.

I'm beginning to listen black metal (I tried years ago but de4th was more appealing to me, now is the other way around hahaha) and it was thanks to the vocals of Manuel Gagneux of Zeal & Ardor which thank to that I think I discover the type of vocals I prefer, the high pitch ones (if they're called like that) like the Spectral Wound too (which I came across thx to you). Your videos are very helpful to me in this new journey, so thanks a lot 🤘 any recommendations especially with that criteria I mentioned are much appreciated! Other recommendations are welcome too :) Keep it up man your videos are well structured, appreciate the touch of overlapping the audio from the next cut of the video with the one before, great content.

Something I think is pretty interesting is how Black Metal has such a massive range in vocal styles, and how ‘unsafe’ (for lack of a better term) much of it is for the voice. I hypothesize part of that is enabled because of less heavy touring and fewer live performances. Abusing the voice long enough to record an album every once in a while is less likely to do significant damage than playing 5 shows a week for 6 months or something like that. It’s also neat to describe the ‘howling’ style as sounding the most painful… because it absolutely is, even from a technical standpoint! Black Metal being a genre less focused on live performances really opens it up to creative styles and techniques that would otherwise be quite ill-advised if performing regularly because of how unsustainable it is, and I think that’s pretty cool. Also great vid, as usual 😁

Farvann, since you enjoy the silencer 'hysteric-menopause' style of vocals you might also want to search for a greek underground band called Ψ.Χ. If you verbalise these two greek letters in a row it sounds like 'ψυχή' which means 'soul'. It is more of a tongue -in -cheek, troll project, very provocative lyricks, no live performances, unknown artists behind the project, all the good occult stuff that is always nice to have in BM.
