Foam on the beer. If there is no foam on the beer, either the beer is dead, there's not enough gas in the tap, either the glass was dirty. Two reasons to refuse a beer.

Great video again! I had to laugh so loud, my wife asked what was wrong. You said it was a bit over the top, but it is toe cringing recognizable. My brother in law was over from the US a month ago and he complained about the service, the size of the coke, foam on beer “I also pay for the top part of the glass” and he got really angry and impatient, ran inside after he didn’t get enough ice. So yes, spot on!
@gilles111
@gilles111 Жыл бұрын
Next time, show your brother in law the beer the marking on the glasses. There is a small line on the glass marking the 0,2 or 0,5l mark what his beer should be. The extra room in his glass is there for the foam. The markings are there so you can check you got what you paid for. In the USA, a glass for a pint should be full to the rim to match a pint. A Dutch glass for 0,5l has the marking of 0,5l and the extra part for the foam. So he still got his 0,5l beer (or whatever size he wanted).

Americans are big tippers because US bar personell is very underpayed and service is not included in the price, so tipping a certain percentage is almost mandatory. Here in the Netherlands service is included and we tip what we like for the kindness and the atmosphere.

No foam on the beer is the beer is dead (meaning no CO2 bubbles) and thus stale. Or the glass was not properly cleaned. If you pay a big amoount for a small beer, you expect these things to be in order. So foam must be on the beer to check quality. And I just love to "eat" into the foam at the first taste of the beer. It gives a nice sensation.

Foam on beer is a Dutch thing. The region we call Germany today had its "Reinheitsgebot" [1] that translates into both "purity order/law" and "cleanliness order" and this listed ingredients allowed in beer. Yeast was not included in that list and by the standards of way back, no German beer today passes that law. Also, it regulated the market of grains: wheat to the bakers and barley to the brewers. Beer was more like safe drinking water, hundreds of years ago. It starts with boiling a vegan soup from ground grains, then waiting for it to ferment (yeasts eat the carbs and in return put alcohol into the beer). In England you would have ale houses where people opened up their living room and sold their home brewed ale. In Dutch towns and cities, the brewers would be concentrated in one street, generally along a canal as all logistics of bulk went over water. The Dutch version of "an uphill battle" (that you can never win) is "vechten tegen de bierkaai": fighting against the beer quay (implying brewery workers as enemies, both the strongest in town, and full of Dutch courage). Beer was produced at different quality levels and consequently different ABV. For example by reusing the residuals of the first brew (gentlemen's beer) a second time (men's beer) and more until it became beer for women and children. Both in Germany and here, and probably in England too, this led to outlets selling cheaper beer as if more expensive. And this is why Germany had its beer police, IIRC, that not just policed the wheat/barley segregation. Foam on Dutch beer? Well, the foam is an indicator of two things: the beer only has lasting foam when it is really fresh, and in the case of fresh beer, the foam only lasts if the glass was properly cleaned. In cafés/bars where beer is served from kegs or large tanks pressurised with CO2, the cleanliness of those lines and the appropriate does of CO2 are secondary to the freshness and the clean glass only. Classical Dutch beer glasses have a volume level indicated where the beer's fluid surface should be (for the serving you bought) and the space above it should hold that lasting foam. If it's all good, now you take a sip and a ring of foam is left in the glass where the foam surface was before the sip. Each next sip adds the next ring of foam. You need a special detergent for beer glasses in order for this to work properly. You can make a law on purity and police it at considerable cost, or you can be pragmatic and have a cultural tool that informs the consumer. Let's face it, being guaranteed that beer got brewed from a few ingredients only is one thing, but does not guarantee that your small village's pub serves fresh beer. [1] German expat in the USA a has a nice overview of German beer history in her YT video kzbin.info/www/bejne/joeseauHi89qqpI "Why GERMAN BEER is so famous", channel "Feli from Germany", released Aug 8, 2023. While - gluten - I cannot drink beer, I drank it until the medical issue surfaced and have memories of beers around Europe. German beer was not at the top, but a couple Belgian beers were to me.

Well foam on beer keeps the beer fresh , it also indicated that a glass is clean , the size of the bubbles on top indicate that a glass has been cleaned accordingly , 2 fingers of foam is the rule . if a beer goes flat its stale or extremely dirty glass. There are beers like Bitburger ( slogan Bitte ein Bit . ) a German beer that is a draft beer that needs to settle when coming from the tap it can take 5 to 10 minutes to get a good glass of bit burger beer and its worth it . Also beer is a European mainstay , for the past 2 millennia . also extremely important during the age of sail as beer would be used as back up to the fresh water supplies . as it would contain alcohol that would last longer than fresh water. and contained valuable minerals for the body . Scurvy was a great plague on ships .and armies needed also needed hydration beers where a good way to garantee people not to get sick of contaminated sources and as 90% of the european nations are coastal regions and maritme nations , Beer is a big deal . The same as food items like capucijners ( beans /peas from a bleu pod) high in proteine and vitamins , zuurkool ( sauerkraut ) wich contains huge amounts of vitamine c . The US are not a maritime nation , nor explorers . otherwise they would have beer in their navy as mandatory survival supplies.

Very funny video. They should show this to all expats as part of the "inburgeringscursus". I just wonder, where you guyz live, do they come to your table for your order because I am used that you have to go to the bar yourself to order unless it is also a bistro/restaurant.

It's fairly common in The States to have your table waited and it is also fairly common that waiters are either vastly underpaid or the place charges a mandatory 'tip' (serving fee). On a global scale I do believe that it is not them but us that are the odd ones to have cafes that are operated by a single person that really only comes from behind the bar to collect empty glasses that haven't been returned by customers themselves.

Foam on beer. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany it's a "must". Two fingers of foam. Pouring beer from the barrel is considered an art and there are competitions. Watch a couple of videos on the subject and you'll understand. Also the drinking has it's etiquette e.g. never from a plastic cup, never directly from the bottle, never ice-cold, etc.

3:31 The foam on the beer means it is freshly poured or came straight from the tap. It also keeps the carbon in, so the beer doesn't go flat. No foam means a flat beer. People will also send the beer back if there's a ton of bubbling coming from the glass. This means it is dirty, as the carbon has a place to nucleate, coming out of solution and becoming a gas. CO2 is dissolved into the beer and as the pressure releases in a can or bottle, or it comes out of a beer tap and into atmosphere, some of that CO2 turns to gas as the beer can't hold that much CO2 nor does CO2 want to be liquid at atmosphere (1 bar). This isn't the case in more southern European countries, mostly non-Germanic, as their beer has way less carbon. I've heard from tourists they feel bloated from our beer, given the amount of carbon. The same goes from some British beers and many Australian beers, so it might be for American beers. This is also what makes a can spray you, with any carbonated drink. The shaking makes the CO2 turn to gas in the liquid and as the pressure is released, it pushes the liquid out. If you want to prevent this, don't tap the bottom, but the sides. You want the bubbles to rise to the top, so there is no liquid above it to push out.

Bwhahahaha. That was hilarious. Sally was great! Hahahaha. 10 points! I do not know how you timed the recordings, but if you read the comments from last video, there are a lot of things true. Many people do not like to hear that they fit a stereotype, but I say a stereotype has to come from somewhere to become a stereotype. As long as there is foam on beer, it is at it's best. A good beer in a clean glass will result in foamrings on the inside of the glass while drinking. When the beer is in ggod condition you can count the amount of sips it took to empty the glass. Dunking beer into a glass is for everybody. Pouring a good beer takes skill. I even competed once in the Heineken biertapwedstrijd. A competion in serving beer. Hahaha.. MORE ICE!!!!!!!!

And the large portions of everything is what's making the Americans medium and large themselves :) When we go to a bar, we don't need to have a beer the second we enter, you need to experience the place, look around, what a nice café, oh look they have a billiard table, look at those people, etc. and than when the beer arrives you can really enjoy it. Treat the staff as you would like to be treated yourself. And Sweet Caroline.... late at night you might not recognize the Americans, because the Dutch will be singing along just as loud haha 🍺😂👍

Oh you guys, for my information: is coffee in de US less strong than here? I bought a coffee from a famous American brand who have a store in Utrecht and I was very disappointed. Lateron I thought, maybe that is to the American taste. How do you rate "our" coffee, is it (to) strong?

Yup, I saw them. they were so obnoxious that they chased all the other customers out of the place. I would have thrown them out long ago myself if I was her.
