Life in the Netherlands, from the unthinkable to normal! When we moved to the Netherlands from the US, we knew there were going to be some changes...and there were. Some were very easy to adjust to, and some ...well not so easy. For us, moving to Europe has never been more satisfying and living in the Netherlands has been a dream come true and we wouldn't change a thing. But living in Holland takes some getting used to...everything from biking, food, the holidays and even the people can be a bit hard to get to know. As expats living in Europe, it took some time for things to become "normal".

What I actually see in you two, and I'm comparing to the couple of years I've lived in the US (as a corporate pilot, so I've seen a good part of it), is that you're becoming more open-minded. Instead of being afraid or uncomfortable around unknown things or other cultures, you're becoming interested, wanting to find out more. I'm really glad that that is happening to you. I think it's also the reason you're doing so well here. I think it's fantastic that it seems that you've found your place in the world. Happy to have you!

I LOVE your open attitudes, and willingness to accept a different way of life! O have always felt drawn to the Netherlands since I first visited as a 13 year old with my family. I've totally enjoyed - but also benefitted from! - learning from you guys, even to simply prep for a trip. So excited that my hubby and I finally have managed the minor health issues we both had this year and are booked to fly over in July! I hadn't figured on getting to Rotterdam, but apparently there are some pretty amazing prehistoric whale bones at the Naturhistorisch Museum. Yes, in Europe people waiting on tables get a decent pay. That makes them expensive for the restaurant and they only employ as many as they really need. They might not have the time to be at your table in the first three minutes. Also: europeans sit down to relax, have a nice chat, look at who's walking by ... No need for your drink or meal to appear instantly. Take your time!!

That was exactly my thought, it is considered somewhat rude or hasty here if the waiter is standing next to you when you just got your coat off and not even seated yet. We Dutch like our time to settle down and relax if we are out to eat for relax and enjoy time.

About the flowers, we are spoiled in the Netherlands. Sometimes I am watching a romcom from the USA and somebody gives their love interest a bouquet of flowers. And when I see those flowers I am like, that bouquet would be like the cheapest ones at the tankstation or supermarket in the Netherlands. 😂

The thumbnail in combination with the title had me in a fit. It is so telling about your transformation. I can vividly remember the pained expressions on Eric's face when he tried his first bitterbal or gods forbit,.. almonds on his cookie. Over time the realisation started to kick in that other things can be nice if you try them out and now you've become curious to try things. By now you'll understand the raised eyebrows and skeptic look when Europeans hear Americans go on about the land of the free and freedom. I followed the transformation and think you both are far more relaxed these days.Thank you for sharing this journey.

To be honest in the US you are more free, I do prefer the Dutch socialstate but in the US you for example dont need a bsn.

@@rutgerb it’s not required by law to have a social security number in the US, but it is basically required by life. I don’t think you can even get a driver’s license or a mortgage without one, so what’s the point in not getting one? US freedom is being able to live off-grid, but on grid everything is pretty strict. I don’t think it’s fair to compare a Dutch life to that of an American hermit. The average American enjoys less freedom than we do, I think that’s fair to say.

But its not only the hermit, the odd cult or the pseudo guerilla group: when you are around the top of the pyramid you enjoy plenty of extra freedoms compared to us. You had me laughing out loud about people afraid of being scammed… Picture this: me being over 60, living in Rotterdam my whole life, worked in the City Hall for decades, and then when leaving the office, Coolsingel, late sunny afternoon, there’s a couple, studying the city plan but looking around a little bewildered. So I kindly asked them: "Can I be of assistance?" Upon which they noticeably moved closer together, said "No" (like I was handing out religious or political pamphlets), and briskly turned away from me. Considering the other one weird, was definitely mutual ;-)

This is one of the first things I always tell my American friends about: the Dutch - also the Dutch police officers - will come to you and ask if you need help the moment we see you standing somewhere, looking bewildered. Or that strangers would just have a babbeltje (small talk) with you. They still don't believe me 😆😂! We'll see when they finally get here for vacation!

Regarding the service in a bar/restaurant or at the terras in the Netherlands. The service is rubbish. Long waits for ordering, drinks or bill. It’s not uncommon a waiter is being rude. The waiters are usually students doing it as a side job. They don’t live for the tips so they don’t care much about service. They have no intention this becoming a main income. Which is different then others countries, esp. USA. Where waiting is main income. And giving good service means bigger tips. Dutch want to be efficient and loath to wait. That’s why, instead of waiting for the bill, they usually go up to the bar or register to pay before leaving. Also why Dutch don’t que up in a line but from a funnel before an entrance.

That's true. Here in Australia you can buy Edam cheese but you have to read the label to make sure it is made in the Netherlands. The Aussie Edam doesn't taste anything like the original.

There have been stories about live pigs being transported all over Europe to Parma in order to receive the official stamp but the consortium that controls the brand has set such high prerequisites that no Dutch pig could ever receive it. Which is a good thing, for the animals. Which doesn't mean that you cannot create the exact same dry cured ham somewhere else, but you can't sell it under the name Parma ham and people will be unlikely to pay as high a price for it.

Great point about the service being laid back. Service is perhaps not the quickest, but it will (usually) be quick enough to enjoy being there. Because in the vast majority of cases, people go to restaurants etc to enjoy the company of the person they are with.

Regarding restaurants: in Europe, going to a restaurant is social quality time so you do no want to rush or be rushed. I never get used to the 60 or 90 minutes 'feeding slots' which are commen in US restaurants (thankfully not all of them)...

13:46 Eel, every kind of preparation, is delicious but also very expensive here in Germany. Hering, we call it Matjes, is the best and quite cheap. You need to get it fresh from a fisherman/weekly market, never from the super market. I can see how people, not used to it, have prejudices because of the look and the texture. I was just watching your video when my doorbell rang, 2 kids, a boy and a girl age 8 and 7 where standing there with a collectebus to collect money in the neighbourhood for Jantje Beton. This is a organisation which collects money so kids can play outside for example. This happened just at the point you where talking about being afraid getting mugged or scammed when you where walking in a street in the US. I realised that this is such a good example how it should be everywhere in the world.....not being afraid that your kids getting hurt when they want to collect money for a good cause. I also did this when i was a young kid in the 70's and it was a lot of fun because sometimes we got candy or fruit (Apple or pear). Love to see how you guys enjoy the Netherlands ❤

It is good to realise that so many things we in the Netherlands take for granted are not that granted at all. there is another KZbin who includes the different situations in USA/Canad and the Netherlands and it makes me happy the Netherlands isn't zoned and car dependent. Nice it was good to hear from you and get updates on how you’re progressing there. One thing I wanted to mention is it almost sounds like you’re recovering from the trauma of living where you did in SoCal. I live near Seattle and have done many of the things you never would have done down there. Maybe if you decide to To move back to the states, it wouldn’t be back to Kelly. My family that lives in Rotterdam and I and another family member just did a weeklong trip to the national parks in Utah, and none of us had ever seen Utah before, and I think my Dutch son-in-law was speechless most of the week! watching your video gives me a red blush on my cheeks. Almost everything is OK in this country. And you have comparison material. And therefore for all native Dutch people to be more positive about our country. We grumble a bit in this country. Now people say "if a Dutchman doesn't grumble, then something is really going on". Once again considering your experiences and watching the news. Sudan,Ukraine ect. I don't think it's that bad here either. Or in the future people will still greet each other??. Wim, you're not the only one thinking the contact on the street will get less and less. Whenever I come by a bus stop, nobody seems to talk with each other any more. Just standing far apart and largely looking on their phones. If I greet them from my bicycle (because I come close by), people always seem to be surprised. That sure used to be different. A bit of a collection of the subjects of the last almost two years in a kind of update. Nice to see you adjust in a kind of natural way. Love to see you are getting used to Dutch people talking to you without obvious reasons. I often go sit near the watermill in Genneper parken (at some point painted by van Gogh) just to relax, sometimes (mostly in the weekends) with a beer and a joint, and since I do that I have quite range of people that I know just from that spot because they walked up to me (or stopped their bikes) for a little talk, and those people then also got to know each other so now on a sunny Sunday it's sometimes like a little party even with bbq and street musicians that also like to go there... did I mention the ice-cream car?? 😁😍😊😇

The reasons for the difference in shopping for food (and other things) is not only the ones you have mentioned but also the difference in zoning policy. In general, in the USA you have much stricter zoning into housing and shopping areas. In Europe, zoning is more flexible, and care is taken that shops are available inside housing areas.

Love your videos because I get to see my country from a different perspective and you two are very observant and eager to intergrate. However, my experience with people who will come up to you and talk are different from yours. I once travelled across the US by train for a month and was pleasantly surprised by the fact that Americans would come up to me and start a friendly conversation. They would even give me their address and an invitation to drop by....In the Netherlands I always use public transportation but that never happens here.

Actually it is all quite simple, when you go to another country, doesn't matter where you come from or where you are going to, just go with the flow and follow the rules and customs of your new country and everything will turn out fine, no matter WHERE you go! Thumbs up!!

When living in The Netherlands (1956-1969), I've never lived in a big city but in a house in Velp, a small village of less than 10,000 inhabitants, sandwiched between the river IJssel and the Veluwe. Houses had a small storage for bikes, tools, garden stuff, etc., so no bikes in the streets.

I think the most you both have learned is to take in easy...unstress. Most people here like to relax going to a cafe or restaurant. Normaly first they will ask if you want something to drink to let you settle down and come back later to ask what you would like to eat. Your are more dutch than 2 years ago👍😘

The stairs thing is really mostly a thing in big old cities like Rotterdam, Amsterdam, etc. Moving to more suburban areas with newer houses (dutch 'newer' so houses from ie the '50's onward) will not have the narrow steep stairs :P As for the curtains - that's a somewhat personal thing really. Lots of dutchies don't close 'm but plenty of us do. No judgment from either side though. Personally, I'm on the side of 'I'm not a television so when inside is lighter than outside, the curtains won't stay open' :D

Stairs are smaller in cities and in older houses. In villages or modern buildings they are wider. The latter trough building codes
