How To Stain A Faded Compostie Door

had this faded mahogany composite door to decorate tand bing it back to life to look like new.
Sometimes the pigment used in composite doors can fade over years due to the sunlight etc.
I decided to key it with a 120 grit sandpad then use 2 to 3 coats of waterbased exterior mahogany stain in a satin finish.
I did a scratch test after the first coat and it stuck and bonded to the composite surface which then I put a further 2 coats of stain ontop and te results were amazing.
Customers very happy that they didn't have to change the door completely.
Ronseal 10 year waterbased exterior woodstain is a fantastic product and the way forward moving away from solvent based stains. Comes in all colours and available in Screwfix.

My knowledge is limited but it’s gotta have some varnish mixed in it too. I didn’t even know stain came with a sheen. So yeah… bit baffled

Regarding above's bafflement...stain use to be just stain colour,then you could apply a varnish on top for protection.. that's going back to those black n whites days though.

great job mate , i have painted composite pvcu doors before but never stained them , my method was to lightly sand , wash with methylated spirit to degrease , allow to dry , apply 1 coat zinsser BIN123 allow 48 hrs to harden , 1 coat oil based satin allow to dry for 48hrs , lightly sand again & apply 2nd coat oil based Satin - 3 years later & door still looks a tlike day i did it 👌

My next door neighbour told me clean the with damp cloth wait for it to dry and spray s cloth with WD 40 wait for it to dry and BINGO back original colour

I got a oak composite door.can I lightly sand and use a oak stain. What would you recommend?

Yes I would. You can do 2 coats in a day so every 4 hours. I did 3 coats minimum and it worked a treat
