HOW TO | Stair Step Chimney Flashing

They have hand breaks to do the bends on the steps. Easier then handling on a large break. They sell them all different sizes. Nice vid man, super small mistakes, it’s a roof if it doesn’t leak and you can’t see it from the ground it doesn’t matter how it looks. Lol. You know when people buy old Victorian homes with slate roofs,That I have done repairs on,usually the peek leaks broken slate,now I had four fireplaces on each side,I ran into a huge bat colony,Did you ever run into bats,? And do you do slate roofs?

Not judging, just want to give a suggestion. I’m working on a video on chimney flashing as well. Just wanted to say- when you cut your shingles that butt your step flashing, you wanna cut them around a light quarter inch from the chimney. This leaves room for water to flow which basically makes it a self cleaning system. If there’s any debris there the water can wash it out. Also the shingles can buckle just a little bit if they’re cut to tight with the temp change. When they are cut tight, the snow can work it’s way up under them and spread out past the flashing over time. Also debris will soak up water and it can kind of cause a catch and it will spread. I’m not saying it will leak, but I have seen it happen. And it is recommended by manufacturers to leave a little room for the water to flow. When you leave a little gap the water doesn’t hang around, it flows down fast stays on top of the flashing. Washes out any shingle grit etc. just a tip! As you know, always watching and glad to see someone doing good work. Also, this is the same around any obstructions - boots vents etc. just leave a small gap for the water to flow easily.

I step flash up the roof along the chimney and then grind or cut a new kerf parallel to the roof about an inch above top of step flashing. Make a L shaped counter flashing the will slide in the new kerf and over the top of step flashing. It’s a very clean look.

You do good work man. I own a small company too and my hats off to you for posting vids to the world and dealing with the negative comments. It’d be one thing if you were a hack but ur not. You’re a young boss with a young crew doing a good job. Keep it up. On another note, I own that same break, if you can part with about another $1000 get yourself the legs, sidewinder, and cutting wheel. You won’t be laying the metal in the grass and using a knife, it’s money well spent. And I saw another guy comment who knows his shit too, 3/4” hem cause the break measures it for you. Nice job. Concrete pin anchors also work good to fasten the counter flashing to the brick. A lot of time went into that. Hope you able to charge him enough for all that extra work. Top notch dude.

One of my carpenter buddies does chimney flashing in a pinch. His approach is to scribe the top edge of the flashing section against the chimney and use a diamond saw to cut a straight kerf in both block and joints. Has been doing this for years with good results; water tight and much simpler job.

I am sure that this was much more labor intensive that the 25 minute video shows. Not sure if it would be worth my time doing it this way, as opposed to a single sloped cut (which you mentioned could be done with a handsaw). But you do beautiful work and thanks for sharing this additional feature!

nah lol dumb story really. I was using my hook blade to pull the caulk off that chimney and a big ass fat butt spider crawled on my leg...I tried to cut his ass in half but hooked my knee with the blade lmao swelled up bad by the end of this video and I couldn't bend it at all by the end of the night. took an ice bath though and elevated it, took ibuprofen and I was good to go in the morning. still can't bend it all the way though. pretty swollen at the moment.

Zack of All Trades most people will argue that the weakest part of the flashing is the vertical cut. I see you cut yours to a certain angle which is cool! I think I’m going to start bending my vertical cut 3/4” on mine (like you did on each step) to make it just that much better. That way if the caulk ever fails you’ll have that bend there

For years I worked for a company that did 5 roofs today, I ran 1 Crew. Every house got new metal. Never had a leak. Drugs and gambling killed the company. I saw the old boss not too long ago. They had many lawsuits but not anyone of my jobs leaked.. so I've done thousands of chimney flashing. If I stair-step the metal like that.. I would cut in the " verticals" .. but I usually stick to the single cut straight style counterflash

You should have bent the top stiffened bend the opposite way. Then you would would be flush with the brick. Much easier to lay the level.

that wouldn't look right in my opinion....there would just be a flashing floating on the side of the chimney. that section of the chimney doesn't need flashed, the edge does, but we did flash that up and caulk the edges. I deleted the parts about the bottom when I explained it because I didn't want to take from the stair step part and make the video too long.

Your side wall counter is very nice...weak rear pan and front corner pan. This is the type of leak that is very slow an not noticeable for many many years. I like to see a soldered front and rear pans integrated into the step flashing.

We personally step flash up the chimney as normal and cut down the length of the chimney with a grinder so you just put a bend on a piece and silicone and masonry nail it in

Us old timers used to make them out of copper in pieces and overlap them, rather than try to make one stair step piece. We used lead wedges to jam them into the reglet before we caulked.

You gonna show us how to do the backpan? I’ve seen so many guys not run it past the edges then wonder why it leaks.. I tore up a chimney one time that had two layers of flashing, neither backpan went past the sides, and there was an open hole straight to the decking 🙄 tore that whole section up and repaired it with all new flashing, underlay and shingles and haven’t heard any more about a leaking chimney from them 😝

Not bad me personally I have never done one with aluminum I have done many with lead just stair step never one piece like you have here but all in all great job I been a roofer since 1997 an I like to see nice clean work what kind of caulking did you use please tell.me u didn't use geoseal I prefer the mortar in a tube with apoxy gray mortar not the kind with grit in it the apoxy dry's soild almost like mortar would

They do have a good product call geoseal 4500 it's like roof tar but you can apply on wet surfaces and it's great for rubber roofs an roll roofing systems.

What happens with the water that gets behind the brick on the chimney? There is a gap between the frame of the chimney and the brick veneer.. Frame is wrapped for water not to get the wooden sheathing wet and but in this case it will run down behind the brick and will get the roof sheathing wet.. Just curious..

Ive always ran the "baby flashings" in the top groove as a counter flashing. Yours does look real clean though. Liked the rivits to hold the metals. together.

If I ever redo mine, it will be a straight one like that. My current flashing that the original builders did is just resting flat on the brick and the gap painted with blackjack tar. I have no idea how it hasn’t leaked yet.

Just cut into the brick with a mason blade and install a 1/2 x 5 counter-flashing.

English roofer here we use lead but same principal on step all you need to do is cut width an length draw line like inch higher then centre all way through then take your level or small timbre run it long the top of brick mark it cut perfect would save u half the time

Also if you mark a line on chimney to match the line an inch higher than centre makes chasing out motor a lot easier

The bend you put on is making it harder for you , you only need to follow your mortar line with a straight edge , then add 20 mill for a fold into you brick work

I grind in and add lead. Much easier. I also use a drop cloth for dust.

@@NWIVeteranConstruction I was taught that mortar has chemicals that can corrode aluminum. Lead does not.

No need for a tape measure, pencil marks, mistakes, etc... bring up a roll tuck it in mortar, roll it down and slice it. You can also weave the lead under the shingle.

I also cut 1/8 strips of lead and fold it until slightly larger than mortar joint, then tap in lead with punch. Friction fit with a little lexall on top!

Funny how you guys use imperial but come up with sums like 7.06, you are working it out in inches, giving the answer in metric and then using inches to lay out the flashing 🤔
