I happened upon this video… it was running in the background from another video and I looked up and things got more crazy… so to speak… Bear with me- but please refrain from giving advice when you actually don’t know what you’re saying. Words and terms in business and any industry for that matter, matter. What you assume a business license is- is not at all that. A business license is required for some industries, most, but not all. Music publishing and record labels do not need these. Now Company Registration IS NOT A BUSINESS LICENSE. Again, registering a company as an LLC, SCorp etc is NOT the same as a business license. For the industries that require a license, that is needed IN ADDITION TO- the company registration. Also- LLC is not a limited liability corporation-it is a limited liability company. That’s really important because a corporation is run differently to a company… esp an LLC. I do hope your other stuff is better- please speak on the things you have actually executed and understand fully. I’m sure your other stuff is great otherwise. This industry begs of its “teachers” to be careful. Know what you’re speaking about- consult someone in the specific field before giving advice guys, please.

i’m going to assume your intent is be constructive. 1. i’m trying say people need to create a business to manage the funds not to be the publisher. 2. i’m asking people to get their ein, register as a business with their state and locality, get their business license, get a bank account, sign up as a publisher on the PRO, and start to generate revenue. 3. this video was created at a time where the goal to be as simple as possible without making the video too long was the goal. this is an over simplification of the process. the problem with this comment is, i do know what i’m saying and i’m willing to correct when I make mistakes but the way this comment comes across is condescending not constructive. i agree terms matter. tone matters too.

Foreign rights are collected by ASCAP, BMI, and other agencies by default. Publishing Administration just helps you with the registration.

i don’t think you need to buy a license. You become a member, register your songs, and other people can license them. I recommend you start with just registering your songs and as you grow your business then expand to a pub company

I am confused now. In order to collect publishing royalties from my PRO for my self-published songs, do I need to create & register a publishing business entity with my local govt or is that optional? I thought BMI / ASCAP allowed you to specify that you are the publisher to collect the publisher's royalty share as well , even without having a business entity registered with the govt. Please can you clarify? And if that is possible, then why do need to have a business entity created & registered with the local govt?

It’s optional. I have a publishing company because I want to publish other artists. It’s ultimately a business and this is a guide on how to start that business.

You collect as much as you own. Most people miss 50% of their revenue by not collecting the publishing portion.

It’s because when they register for ASCAP or BMI they don’t always sign up for both types of accounts. I the companies claim they collect both sides (writer side -50%) & the (publishing side - the other 50%)…but I noticed that my checks are bigger when I have both accounts. The publishing account is usually for managing multiple songwriters. If it’s just you, you really don’t need it. Just get publishing administration if you make A Lot of music. If you don’t make a ton of music just sign up for ASCAP and BMI as a writer. You make more money by getting more streams

Yes. Sign up with the MLC at themlc.com | register your works there and they will collect on your behalf. Also make sure you’re signed up with a PRO like ASCAP or BMI so your getting those royalties

You can join as a publisher on both BMI and ASCAP only if you are the publisher for OTHER artists who are on both BMI and ASCAP. As a self-publishing artist (where YOU are the artist), you can be the publisher on either BMI or ASCAP (not both) depending where you registered as the ARTIST.
