Another tip: If you know the material the class is going over, learn it over winter break. You have a lot of time to get ahead to make sure you are happily right on top of your work rather than behind all year. The difference between being a little bit ahead and a little bit behind is HUGE in terms of stress.
@cumensu9 жыл бұрын
Great tip! I've always struggled with motivation. After my first semester of graduate school this past Aug.-Dec. I did reflecting and have concluded that being ahead an assignment, or 2, or more is what might be best for me if the option is available.
@jacobbailey54989 жыл бұрын
Yep and once you DO those tasks, ironically, you will need a LOT LESS motivation in the future because you won't be stressed.
@jacobbailey54989 жыл бұрын
i.e., if you get ahead by a little bit you will be continuously in a non-stressed state if continued. Which means you don't need the huge motivation required to do things while in a stressed state.

@ArtsyAngelee8 жыл бұрын
Definitely following these tips can help. Feeling like you're prepared and ready for what comes next can calm you down a great deal. You can also reach out to someone. A friend, one of your parents or post on a school message board. Just say honestly "I'm quite nervous about starting my first semester". But it's OK and normal to be scared right now. Just know that once the first two weeks pass by and you start to settle in to the class and schedule, you'll realize that it's not that bad at all.

One thing I find really cool is reading through the notes or material of something that is GOING TO BE TAUGHT soon (maybe the next day or week) beforehand really helps while the class is taken. (I'm talking about a new topic or a new lesson). Even if you don't understand shit, just skim through them, and you'll understand better when it is taught. Maybe you can even get interactive in class and answer the professor's questions. 🙂

I had such a hard time with finding a study area. Cause if I tried to move my desk around, I'd just gravitate to my bed no matter what and flop in my studies. So I basically had to completely remove access to my bed. So now I just study at a particular table in one of my college libraries. I get sooo much work done now when I'm surrounded by books and other people studying. It really helps me.

One habit I have started this new semester is watching one of these videos every morning after breakfast while I finish my coffee. Really helps me feel confident going into the day. Also, I have a suggestion for a video if it doesn't already exist. Now that organizations are starting to meet, I'm having a tough time picking which ones to join while still leaving time for homework and other things. Between church groups, a couple research opportunities, geology club, environmental service club, and many more, I just want to do all of it. How can I choose which ones to commit to and how much can I do to still maintain balance in my schedule?

Well atleast I did do quite good progress on my own hobby of learning Japanese, and I also enrolled on a Japanese course my school offers, those are really rare in my little country. Thanks for this video, Thomas! You should have definitely mentioned that one of the ways to start off your new school year/semester is to watch your videos. Seriously, they are very motivational and very informative. One thing I wanted to know, is about your experience with voice recorders. I recently bought a voice recorder and a) I would like to know about YOUR experience with voice recorders and b) I would like to know how to maximize the effectiveness of a voice recorder. Right now, I am thinking of recording my teachers lectures and I am trying this new thing where when I am studying at home and writing notes, I started voice recording and I talk aloud through my thought process so when I am revising, I replay my voice recording whilst studying to maximize my focus because in my opinion AND experience, your focus is more honed when more of your senses are used. So for example I am using my hearing more and I am becoming more focused, is there perhaps a study behind this? Because some people study easier when listening to music so it will be a very interesting thing to think about.

If you have a Mac or iPad, it might be worth checking into an app called Notability. It lets you type and write out (with a stylus) notes along with recording lectures. The coolest part about it is that your notes are directly linked to the recording so you can listen back to what the professor said 3 weeks ago during a test by just clicking through your corresponding notes.
@TheBluePandorica9 жыл бұрын
Chris Gatewood I would honestly use those handy apps except for the fact that phones/tablets aren't allowed in my school so I had to exclusively buy a voice recorder. :/

Dude I am not even kidding, whether Thomas makes a video on this or not, it's an awesome study hack, I was studying just 10 minutes ago and I was writing notes and I was voice recording and giving a commentary over my study, as soon as I stopped recording, i wanted to go outside and started to procrastinate, in fact, this message itself is a procrastination, I haven't finished writing my notes and I decided to do this, I didn't think about doing it when I was voice recording and studying. Holy crap.. I really hope this works in the long term and is not just a two day solution.
