I usually am all about Gary's advice but i think he missed the mark a bit on this one. Not saying he's wrong but i think he assumes every aspiring entrepreneur wants the next Nike (or to own the Jets 😁). But for many, they simply want to get out of the corporate lifestyle and be self sufficient doing something they enjoy (including the grind). I think his advice is better in the context of not jumping in head first to something you have little to no experience in OR in the context of it being different running a fashion business vs. being a front-line soldier for one. Still a lot of solid advice here GV!

I think Gary advised this dude to "shadow" a successful entrepreneur specifically because of the question he asked i.e. the top tip for someone new to the game looking to succeed on a razor-thin budget with zero practical experience is to not take the risk of jumping into a business but learn about all the moving parts and absorb all positive traits associated with successful business people ... now does that mean that no one can become a successful entrepreneur if they jump straight into the fire? NO ... but it is rare ... Just like not every Harvard dropout will become the next Gates or Zuckerburg ... and the kind of people that do will just know that they can do it and not have to ask the question this dude asked ... for all of the rest it is just a common sense move that Gary V suggested ...

I’m usually in line with near 100 of what Gary “spits”. But he kinda missed the mark here and even seemed a little perturbed that a straight question was asked that he couldn’t just give a quick answer to. There are young entrepreneurs who DON’T have a family with a wine business, and have at least a start to experiment on things that may works. And saving $3000 is a HUGE deal. The kid asked for 3 tactics he should focus on, and $3k is in the bank to something with as well. But Gary tells him to shut down his BIZ and go work 3 years for some else. Then adds “be an assistant” to a CEO as if those are just handed out like candy. Simply put, Gary could’ve taken time with this and not been so rushed and embarrassed that he was flustered by the question. Because it was THE MOST SOLID question from a young business builders perspective I’ve seen in a long time. Gary’s great, and his spit is FIRE. But this one left a lot to be desired.

Appreciate this advice! I’m currently working for a small business and the money isn’t that great - BUT I am getting an EDUCATION about running a business. Before I started working for this successful business, I thought that I had a solid method in handling complaints, and after seeing how the owner does it, I realised I don’t know *sh!t* - there’s nothing appealing about telling others I’m doing admin, operations and customer service for a small business, but what I’m learning is invaluable and I’ll be applying it to my own at some stage this year. I've been running a comedy club out of my off-campus apartment for the past 2 years, and I'm leaving to go to Los Angeles for a summer to be an intern at another big comedy club there. Sorry to bring one up out of the Archives BUT I am feeding on all this content right now, so good! At the beggining of this year I quite a job I wasnt enjoying and taken a new job now that although takes me away from my family for short periods of time it also free's me up when I'm home to get myself back in the game and start what will be my 4th business. Unlike a 20 something year old, I cant live at home with Mum nand Dad, I have 3 kids and a beautiful wife to help look after so I need to work and earn x amount, but I have sold off all the toys and now even drive a cheap reliable normal car so I can afford this next adventure, I've had to "lower my status" but figured my real friends wont give a shit so I got over that pretty quick but it wasnt easy to do at the time I was very short sighted. I'm so friggin excited, next week I am pitching an "Internship" idea to a company so I can learn the craft, I will be working for free for as long as it takes to learn what I need to learn so I can come out the other end with the knowledge to get my own business going, short term pain for long term gain. The company wasnt keen at first as its not usual practice here in Australia to take on Interns but I was able to leverage on my many lifes experiences and have plennty to offer any company I end up Interning for because I am one of those guys who is a Jack of All Trades, Master of None, but I am also 43 years old so Im lucky. I think the advice Gary gives in this video is about gaining experience and having patience so that you do things right and then you can achieve your dreams, rushing in and risk being reckless may cost you your dreams, which is why I want to intern first, I could just jump in and give it a crack but I may make mistakes that cost me clients and I dont want to risk damaging their business or wasting their money both of which will cap my potential to grow. Coming up through my 20's and 30's I didnt have a Gary Vee in my corner...I do now!

So many comments on both sides of the coin on this one. On one hand... his advice was more from a wisdom standpoint. He threw out some Mr Miyagi, "Marcro" shit right there haha. But on the other, i can see where he didn't say anything that could help in the "mirco" short term. I worked for several Big Name fitness companies. Hated it. Decided to Branch out on my own. And for Context: i was in the industry for several years. I knew most of the ins and outs... yet, when i went out on my own, I still had a shit ton of questions. Despite already working in the same industry. It's not the same. So for me... I joined a mastermind group of other Fitness Boot Camp owners. Watched hours of KZbin videos from different sources and I learned how to take small bits of advice from everyone and make it my own. Long story short... There's no answer. You're gonna have to figure that shit out on your own. And I think that's kinda what Gary was trying to say here.

Legit question: is it really that easy to contact a CEO of a large corporation to try and get work? My thought is that there must be a lot more barrier to entry and that a CEO wouldnt just let some shmuck work for them bc they want to.. They'd ask for resume's, refer you to HR, things like that - no? If i'm wrong someone please explain it to me. I'd love to work under a big CEO for free - but i dont know how realistic it would be simply just by asking.. theres typically screening processes

You need to get in touch with someone who builds sites to understand how much a site will cost. We are generally in the business of selling time. Same thing can take 2 days or 5 days to implement. There are many variables. These online calculators aren't accurate.

I love Gary and his content, BUT I do not agree with his advice in this video. When you go get a job in a business, you do what helps the business grow, not necessarily what you really wanted. It's the business's benefit at the end by paying employees for their time. I just don't seem to come into agreement in this case. Anyways, here's what I think I would suggest. As I am starting a tech services business here, the number 1 thing that I believe is: 1. To figure out EXACTLY how you will get your customers. I focused on building and it didn't work. As Dan Lok says, nothing happens until a sale is made. It's very true. So that's the first thing in my opinion. I would love if anyone here who finds me right, agrees with what I said, or corrects it if not, and add to it what they think would be the top three things. I will share other two as I gain experience.

Nothing beats real world direct experience. Being young and unbound to family responsibilities is an incredible opportunity. The idea of making a few million in less than a year or two is ridiculous. Most people don't even "make it" till they are almost 40. Thats if they were grinding hard for 15 years or more. Look at Kevin Hart or D Johnson. Those dudes were grinding away relentlessly for over 10 years before getting to where they are. Like Gary says enjoy eating shit for years if you want that pot of gold. If you don't love the process you'll quit in less than a year.

amazed by how many thumbs ups were given to this video which has little to no advice for this situation... I'm no guru with entrepreneurial DNA but I think if you had $3,000, I would put some of it towards adwords, towards inventory for influencers, and I'd invest in some solid photography equipment or borrow some from a friend. Then, I would reach out to/ingratiate myself with all the local IG influencers in your city and start getting them to wear your goods and take photos of them wearing it. This will give you an initial boost and get some cash flowing for more marketing. Apparel is almost always a branding/awareness play. In the meantime, I'd start getting orders from local schools, sports teams, sororities, etc to make them t shirts for events/runs/parties/games, etc. My assumptions here are that you have the printmaking equipment, sourcing, that you live in a big city, and that you have free time to spend on grassroots marketing on FB and IG.

kyraisaboss I in a way I feel the same way as you do. I also have the same interests. I love filmmaking and want to start other businesses, but have not much interest in school. I do believe that it is important to finish school though, because dreams can always change even if you don't believe it to be true. I take many business classes which do actually help in high school, and a videography class which helps me stay on top of filming for that amoun of time without any other distractions. Just stay in school for now and the rest of the time you can put into your goals. The truth is that you probably wont spend 24 hours working on one goal and it is good to take breaks, so school is a good way to try many new things and the rest of the day can be spent working on your goal.
