Great video. If you fire the car as soon as you have oil pressure it doesn't matter about the cockpit fuel shut off. If you push for a while after oil pressure is built and the cockpit valve is open then your fuel pump is filling the engine with fuel, which has been believed to cause them to grenade on start up (bad day). As a fellow sprint driver in the US, I would HIGHLY encourage you to use all your safety gear to fire off the car. I know it takes a lot of time to get into it all, but we had a fuel line come loose and cause a massive fire about a year ago and by the time I got the car stopped and got out (with all my safety gear on and the track fire crew right there) I still spent 19 days in the hospital with 3rd degree burns, requiring multiple surgeries. 20 minutes to suit up may save you weeks within the hospital. Also, always have a fire extinguisher in the push vehicle when you aren't at the track. Totally agree that driving a car is something everyone should do, but it is a dangerous activity (although totally worth the risk in my book). Best of luck! Go fast and may God bless you in everything you do!

thanks boss, stoked to get the tick of approval from an experienced driver. Just to clarify, you’re flicking your ignition as soon as the oil pressure goes up to try stop it from backfiring on startup? I’ll be sure to suit up properly from now on and make sure there’s an extinguisher nearby. Thank you for sharing that cautionary tale I think I was a bit excited to get the car started to make sure it was running after maintenance and naively disregarded the danger of doing even that. Appreciate you, thanks for reaching out and i’ll be clutching onto that luck when we go racing for the first time in a couple of nights 🤝

@reyneleesonmotorsport I do what Greg Wilson says and get the oil pressure up, flip the ignition switch and then immediately turn on the gas valve. With that process it will never fill the engine with fuel and not be igniting it, which will in theory keep the engine from exploding (if it were full of fuel). I have had the mag wired wrong before causing it to never get spark and be loaded up with fuel, luckily once we found our wiring problem we were able to pull the spark plugs and push it around in gear with no plugs in to get it cleared out before trying to put fire back to it solving our problem with the correct wiring and fresh plugs. If everything is right on the car then the order on when you hit the switch and turn the valve on probably doesn't matter as long as you do it all quickly, which is always my goal.

Great video! Agree whole heartedly about everyone having a go in a sprint. I’m currently setting up to run micro sprints here in the US and hope to move into a 305 sprint after a year or so. Your video gives me hope!

that’s badass homie im stoked to hear you have a seat to strap into! I don’t know exactly what a micro is cause there’s so many more classes in the US and you can bet if we have it here we call it something different haha. I really hope you get into that 305, i’m rooting for ya!

After running a lightning sprint with a 750cc GSXR bike engine for several years I got an opportunity to hot lap a friends 410 in Minnesota one night. Let’s just say that was 10 minutes that I’ll never forget! Smashing the pedal with 900hp in a 1600lb car is life changing for a gear head! Pure pissed off acceleration mixed with a pants pissing adrenaline rush is how I would explain it.

You guys might do it a little differently, but like Greg Wilson, I don't open the fuel up until, being pushed so it's not putting fuel into the engine, before it's time to actually fire it up. I and a lot of people in the US also use the fuel to kill the engine, instead of the switch. Start slowly closing the fuel off, once it's close to dying, rev it a little to get the last bit of fuel out of the cylinders before it dies. Killing it switch and fuel open, I could see possibly causing fuel to be still in the cylinders and possibly hydro locking then engine. (Might be a little different, since you're not running a standard mechanical injection.)

That's very interesting indeed, I figured was something to do with oil pressure before you would want to try and fire it, great to see you having a crack at sprinters, I don't get to Motorplex to much in a year being north of the river but a few times a year, hope to catch you there one day, good luck. Like and subscribe people as I did to follow the journey.

I cover that in there somewhere boss! not in great detail but it’s in there somewhere in the chapter “the process”. Looking for the pressure gauge to get above 50 before flicking the ignition switch to fire. I appreciate you thank you!
