Hi Jim, good job, I like it when you see not only what is right now, but see what it can be. 👍

Good to see Jim. I was expecting you to say, "Here's one I trained earlier." not that it was necessary. I have trained lots of boxwood plants, mainly hedges but have plenty of cuttings and now ready to follow your example. Thanks.

Wow, I think I'm going to have to try this. It's probably not as easy as you made it look, but I'm inspired! Thank you Jim!

I’ve got many topiaries started in 2020. Creeping fig and Angel vine on wire frames I made, Euonymus, a few types of boxwood and a pittosporum. All are slow going. Going to take a few years. Looks like the creeping fig and Angel vine will cover the balls decently by next year.

Hi Jim, Loved watching you start this process. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering though... when you say you want the ball to be higher on the stem, couldn't you achieve this by just forming the ball as best you can where the largest amount of growth is (taking advantage of the current growth rather than having to cut so much off), then allow the stem to grow taller while clipping it clean as it grows. I guess if the new plant growth fills in faster than the rate at which the stem grows, that might be the reason for the process you've shown. Anyway, thanks again for sharing! Great video!

I’ve been interested in topiary but hadn’t actually started one yet! I got a lemon cypress for Christmas, that I love so I’m afraid to start pruning on it. I think I will go get a practice plant. Thanks

Go for it. It will grow back regardless

Ah, you got a variegated boxwood. I love mine. It’s so beautiful. It grows so slowly though. It’s going to be years before it is a nice big ball. So far I’ve failed to get any of the cuttings rooted. I’m not sure what it needs to root. I think the color will be striking against the dark pines in the distance.

Holly, what a sweet doggie. Do you ever do a video on doing a spiral? Practically the whole backside of my Alberta spruce has lost its needles and am wondering if I should try a spiral on it? Any reason why some spirals are pruned down to the trunk and some just cut outs?

Hi❤ Do you think shaping in October after planting it into the soil is okay even if it is already autumn: I am in zone 8b🌻 and I have just planted euonymus, Hortencia’s, photinia, piris japonica mountain fire, rosemary, heptacodoum and hamamelis🍀

You know so much, I always learn from you..BUT could you please move the camera closer for this type of thing, it is the only time I wish for a giant screen! I am trying this on a lemon cypress and hope it works out as well. Our big box stores are all getting rid of any Christmasy looking plant.

This is wonderful! My question is... are you going to leave them outdoor or take it inside? I have 3 perfect candidates for 2 and 3 ball topiary growing outside in the big pots. I am in the zone 7a. Thank you.

I can’t believe how quickly it looked like a double ball. I’m guessing you could make cuttings from the material you cut off? Great tips, I’ve got to look around my garden for topiary possibilities now 🤣🤣 can’t go shopping at the moment as we are in a lockdown here in England.

Is there anything you use on the pieces you cut off to keep them from growing back??? I am trying to do a crape myrtle into a single trunk tree. The suckers just keep coming back. Would love to have seen your topiaries potted. 😉

somewhat related, I’d like to plant a significant size boxwood hedge, keeping it small, looking at 1 Gal Sprinter box woods. when is the best time to plant boxwoods? I’m in 7B as well.

Now, if you can find them. Really anytime is fine. More watering to do summer planting, but that is still fine as well.
