It is so beautiful great job! Put cardboard down on top of the grass then put compost and soil on top of the cardboard. The grass will die and break down with the cardboard and make the garden even happier.

I am greek and my grandpa used to take care of his own vegetable garden until he got sick. It was very nice to have fresh vegetables at home that naturally tasted like heaven. Here most people have their very own garden, provided they don't live in an apartment, since we are truly gifted with fertile earth and a favourable climate. Sending love from Greece!

I know this comment was made 3 years ago, but I had to reply because it made me smile. My grandpa (pappou) was from Greece and moved to the US years ago. He made his back yard his "own little piece of Greece" with a large garden complete with grape vines. He made salads and so many good meals with his veggies. Just like your grandpa, he gardened until he got sick-- diagnosed with cancer. What a nice example and memory that we get to have from our grandfathers! Much love.

Put cardboard or newspapers down before creating your beds to stop weeds from coming through your beds, eventually it decomposes and feeds your beds. Also get yourself a Clyde's garden planner, it's the best 6 bucks I've ever spent on our garden!!! It tell me when to plant what according to your frost dates, it also tells you all of the companion crops for each crop. It's for both summer and fall crops. It tells you distance to grow them , and how many seeds per row, and how many pounds of fruit per bed. It's a cool little calendar! You should definitely invest in Clyde's garden planner! I suggest it to everyone!!!! Lol 😂

Very good information in this video. Love that you guys are doing this TOGETHER; and seem really happy doing so. I feel this ongoing experience can really change lives. I live in an apartment; and so the yard is off limits. I chose to grow stuff in a raised bed that I bought from Walmart for about $100 - super simple assembly - a five year old could do it. Got 3 big bags of potting soil, 1 bag of manure, and several different packages of seeds. I don't have a lot of room and made a few mistakes; but it was very satisfying to see that those seeds (some of them were so tiny), actually took root in these cardboard starter kits. The roots grew through the bottom, and then I transplanted the whole thing. Two of the vegetables showed yellow flowers, a taller plant and one where the leaves were much closer to the soil. Got hit with a hail storm; but most everything survived. I think a critter, possibly a squirrel ate the leafy stuff from one of the plants; but can't be sure. And I've been taking video of the process; even if I don't upload to my own KZbin channel; I'll have it as a record of what I've done, what worked and didn't. My biggest issue at the moment; is to know just WHEN to harvest anything. Seems that all of the seeds that I picked were good to plant in May to June or something. But just by looking, I have no idea when to harvest. Since I forgot to label them; I hardly know what the 8 different things I planted are, just by looking at the stems and leaves. But I believe I know what the carrots are and those flowered plants, I'm assuming are both zucchini and cucumber; though I don't know which is which. It's exciting to learn what I can. To me, the advent of the digital age, and KZbin in particular has become priceless... allowing me to discover things I could only dream of before this revolution hit. I subscribed. And best of luck to all your future endeavors!

Hi that’s an awesome easy and simple garden bed! To block the grass, lay carboard boxes.. or stack a bunch of boxes you have lying around from amazon orders and stuff on top of the grass and lay your bed there.. cover the boxes with your soil and you shouldn’t have to worry about the grass popping out. Also the earthworms will help break down the boxes.. you’ll get lots of earthworks this way too
@geraldphillips1533 Жыл бұрын
I recycle the big cardboard boxes that accumulate by removing all the shipping labels & tape. Cutting them so they can lay flat & be used as weed barriers. They will smother the grass & serve as a barrier to weed growth. Within a season they will be broken down and eaten by worms. It’s so much easier than digging out grass & weeds with tools.

Hey Carrie, I love following your gardening! We are getting our garden started at our new home in northern Arkansas! It's still a bit chilly currently, so we did seeds inside and will transplant them in a month. We have tomatoes, green onion, spinach, bell pepper, & jalapenos. Germinating seeds is so rewarding! A great method we use is to lay a few seeds in a damp paper towel folded over in a tightly sealed small ziplock bag. Keep it in a sunny place in your home, and within a week or so, you'll see them germinating!

I love grass clippings and shredded cardboard for mulching my garden beds. Last year, I really started to get into gardening, having got restarted the year before by learning and relearning what I had studied in high school. Whilst my garden still has a long way to go, I am heavily involved in my worm farm for worm-related soil amendments and am keeping my disruption of the soil to a minimum to assist soil microbes in going about their business. Using a mild no-dig approach is proving to be a good thing. As for a journal, I use an online journal at GrowVeg and offline notebook of OneNote for keeping track of my gardening efforts, but there are a lot of other options out there, whether online, offline or non-digital. The advantage of a digital method is that most have a search feature to find where you find previous iterations of a task or item of note.

Lovely video! So glad you advised aginst the plastic under the garden bed. Many people aren't aware that it's in fact terrible for your garden. It blocks beneficial insects and organisms from tunneling up and down from the ground to surface. Those organisms need to be able to reach the surface of the soil and tunnel back down because they're essential for the health of the soil- the veggies/plants actually suffer without them. Cardboard is a much-preferred option if you really want a physical barrier because it breaks down and will become composted material in the soil. 😊🤙
@duckymr12 жыл бұрын
Love this video! I'm about to plant Kale, Chives, Collard greens, Cilantro, green onions, two kinds of arugula, and possibly cabbage, possibly Basil. We just moved into our first house and so this is all very exciting.. I would love to hear about your natural pesticide! I don't have Instagram but I think I'll youtube it. Would love more videos like this. Subscribed! I also would love a composition pile but I'm afraid of how much work it is and how much space it takes up. We live in a skinny house so the yard is very very small. I guess maybe I'll just buy compost. I think the part I'm most nervous about is bugs. In the past bug problems have been frustrating, so I'd like to learn to prevent them if possible. Thanks for sharing about your garden! Sometimes it's best to learn beginner tips from beginners because everything is simple enough and not too complicated. I appreciate that. Gardening can easily get too complicated. (And then overwhelming) anyway, Thank you!

Hi, I am interested in your advise. So, do I just put a cardboard under the garden soil? Does it matter how thick or thin the cardboard is? Thanks!
@terripurcell21304 жыл бұрын
@@lina6641 I put cardboard directly on top of the ground and then added the garden soil. I didn't flatten my cardboard, I just folded the cardboard so that it would be doubled instead of a single layer. Also if you use large cardboard and overlap then its less chance of grass or weeds growing up in between the gaps. I did this to my entire backyard two years ago and its held up.

He can tell you all about a method called no-dig, which allows your worms and other insects to help your soil get better and better, without disturbing it. I've tried his method in the past, and it saved me soooo much time picking weeds, hoeing and digging. I really like that you are paying attention to which veggies you grow next to each other, companion planting is a natural way to battle pests :) And finally, flowers!! The bees need them and will polinate everything around, and they are oh so pretty :)

What a wonderful video. Thanks Carrie ❤️ We live in an apartment so there's no proper garden for us. But I love collecting tips for my future dream garden. One thing I thought while watching this video was how beneficial mulch may be too your garden. Epic Gardening (the videos) have some great videos on cheap/free mulch sources if you're interested. My parents use grass clippings in their garden. You could probably do something similar!

We had our first garden for 2 yrs and just started one in our new home. Something super important that we didn't know as beginners is buy the tomato cages and trellis for squash/cucumber... They grow super long and crazy and you can save space by growing up. Our dogs got to our cucumbers quite a bit. My husband says strawberries grow pretty crazy and did them in their own pot. Also herbs are nice in a pot or on your window sill since you don't use as much of those. Mint will take over your garden if you don't trim it down often, best to plant in their own pot.
