First and most crucial step... Drop bad habits and time wasters like social media and binging Netflix. You have to clear out time for good habits by eliminating bad habits.

For sure!

Well if anything start slow. Not everyone can just eliminate that all together. Some people are used to that stuff. It's too difficult for some people. If people try to do that at 1st, then reading can feel like a chore/ or something boring to do.
@joshuaramos65222 жыл бұрын
I'm saying this cu ik how it feels. I like to read, & I'm trying to be a better reader. However, I've been so used to TV/ Netflix & social media. At least for myself, ik I need to start slow cuz I can't over do it. I get both from my parents, my dad likes TV more & my mom likes to read more. I feel like I like both, but TV had been dominant for a long time.

Nearly impossible to fail with a minimum goal of 1 page per day... However, can you stop at just one? Great tips. Thanks for sharing!
@RickKettner4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, once you start it's hard to stop :).
@future62002 жыл бұрын
It's OK just to stop at 1 page. You can be proud, even. Showing up and developing the habit is the most important, eventually 1 page won't feel like enough, but you won't get there if the habit isn't in place.

Use the Pomodoro technique with an app or timer to give yourself a daily quota. For me it's four sets of 25 minutes each, but start wherever your schedule allows.

Do you recommend speed reading or deep reading?
@RickKettner3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the situation. Generally, I listen to audiobooks at faster speeds when just exploring a new/interesting topic. Once I find a great book, I go back through it in eBook form slowly, and make lots of highlights. So fast sometimes, slow other times.

Hey Rick, What are your thoughts on Kindle ? Do you use it ? Love you and your videos. Hope you and your family are well
@RickKettner4 жыл бұрын
I use the Kindle app on iOS, but find the Kindle hardware to be slow and limited. I like the e-Ink screen, but the software is missing some features that have since been added to the iOS app that make it easier to jump around the book to review previous sections.

Rick how does your reading habit look like? when do you read, on top of what habit you stake it, how long do you read, and for how long did you manage to maintain it?
@RickKettner3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any firm habit beyond reading a little every day. I listen to audiobooks while walking or doing chores around the house, and then when I find a book I really enjoy, I read a digital copy to make highlights (often in preparation for summaries here on the channel). During the summer months, I get a lot more reading due to the nice weather for walking.

My main problem is feeling guilty about wanting to read at all. I did not grow up in a family of readers. I was always that kid being told some version of, "Get your head out of the clouds." Not those words, but the message came through that reading was a waste of time that you could be using to do practical things, not dreaming. My parents worked very hard, physical jobs. Then they'd come home and do all the work that needs to be done in the home and with raising children. They also didn't grow up with many educational opportunities. So I don't blame them at all. But this thought is still in my head every single time I sit down to read anything. Maybe if I've done all my work, taken care of any other responsibilities, and cleaned the whole house (whether it needs it or not) the guilt is put on hold just a bit. I used to try and read before going to bed. But I'm usually so tired that I fall instantly to sleep. The only time I didn't feel guilty was on the train to & from work, because there was nothing else to do. But now that I've been working at home for several years (even pre-Covid), I don't have that time anymore. I can't believe even though I'm over 50, I still struggle with this guilt. I know it sounds insane. But it's a huge problem.

As discussed in Four Thousand Weeks, there is ALWAYS more to do. Life presents limitless opportunities, "must-dos", etc. Just need to carve out time for the things that matter most. Maybe that is reading, maybe it isn't. Decide what matters most and focus on that, and let everything else fit the remaining time. Hope that helps.

Is this correct that if we develop a habit for 21 day it will continue
@RickKettner3 жыл бұрын
There is plenty of disagreement out there on the exact number of days. I think the general consensus is between 30-60 days, but it really depends on other variables (time spent, consistency of routine, etc.). For reading, if you do it consistently every day at the same time, my guess is closer to 30 days for most people as it's a fairly predictable routine.
