Another tip, if someone DMs you and is insistent on only paying you with a check they are scamming you since it’s not a valid way to pay someone online. I almost feel for that scam.

Tell me if this will bring me trouble on the future but; I honestly like to do a veeery simplisitic scketch just to have a hint of the pose they want normally with option A n B. And if they are sure then pay me. Who would have said messy scketches would be a benefict lol. This may have avoided me indecisive people who is not actually sure of what they want to be just as their command and what let me to improvise. Also use it as a filter for people who does not read the chart and find everything too expensive while we chat. I understand why some people would charge extra for this and Im ok with that. But I pŕeffer doing few secketches and have it cancelled than doing half of a piece for a youngerster who wasted their money for not thinking it better or have someone saying constantly 'change this' until the drawing does not look enythig like we started with. This last is my main problem.

@@aylenpons6682 I usually just ask them to pay half of the commission price upfront first. Since it helps keep me motivated. If they change the sketch too much than just ask them what they really want or like you asked just cancel.

@@aylenpons6682 This might be a problem for you in the future; some people will ask for commissions hoping for these free sketches/plans, then when the artist does them in good faith like how you described, the "client" can then just ghost you, and you've done some work and spent your time for free. I've heard of this happening to my other friends who take comms, but I personally have been very lucky to avoid it

Sometime I've seen artists offer seasonal/limited time discounts for commissions with certain elements, eg, your oc in a santa costume, for a discounted rate. Along with being cute, I assume that also helps you because it allows you to redraw a few chosen elements and skip having to study them for each piece. Ie. The previously mentioned santa suit will use the same pallet and brushes each time.

Big tip! Go for a half half commission basis. 50 up front, 50 when done. This is for both your sakes. One perspective is if the customer decides to bail, you're not out of cash. Another is for the customer, they don't need to worry about YOU bailing with their cash. I paid full price once and felt really nervous the entire time the artist would bail. Also limit your adjustments. Something like 2 free adjustments, anything more costs extra. I've had people ask for an entirely new addition to the picture when I was on a time limit. I said if they want it that short notice , it'll be extra payment.

Hell I created a tadpole design for my fiances friend who owns a business. I could have easily sold that design for 120, but because I made it for fun and she is a good friend of my partners I sold it for a drop out subscription xD. From my experience, and for me helping my artist friend figure out her business, your first and most important role is marketing, so obviously set yourself up somewhere where there’s a lot of traffic, KZbin TikTok Twitter, maybe Instagram? But I guess TikTok Twitter and Instagram are kinda iffy right now, then from that point develop your social media presence, what should people expect from you what is your style what is your vibe, and then from there when people want to know more about you make it very easy for people to follow into your other accounts, so you have your main marketing site where you essentially advertise yourself, and then from there it should be very easy to go from link to link to link, you should be able to draw a very clear diagram of how one person can get to one thing and then to another thing such as like your personal website or your patreon or other social media that you’re a part of or a business email for taking commissions, whatever it is the most important thing is to reach your audience by utilising social media marketing on a site that has high traffic, carving out an identity for yourself that people can discover, and then having an easy flow of traffic to the rest of your online space Tldr; market on high traffic sites, solidify your identity, make flow of traffic into your online space easy

I figured I'd get in here as I am a freelance artist. If someone tells you to pay through friends and family on Paypal, never accept that. If they're a scammer, then you can not request a refund because sending through friends and family, Paypal sees it as a gift payment and you won't be able to get your money back. Also, artists, if you sell NSFW commissions, make sure to send them an invoice, and if they can leave a message when paying for it, tell them to leave it blank. If they write anything NSFW-related in it, your Paypal can get banned.

I have a problem :( So I practice a ton of art styles and I feel like I don't have a specific style of my own. So I feel like doing something different: I offer people commissions based on what style they want. (Some include a full-body cartoon design, a semi-realistic portrait, something that resembles a children's book page or a TV show screenshot, etc.) Is that too complicated? I usually ask them to be specific about what they want and I have different prices for each style/offer.

You decide for yourself. I think a good way to estimate is to see how long it took you. If you spend 2 hours on a drawing, I think 65$ is too much. It also depends on the complexity. If there's no coloring or shading, i don't think you can go too high, and if there's a background, details, shading, a complicated pose etc, you can probably go over 100$. But yeah, basically, it's a mix between how much you want to be paid and how much people are willing to pay

@Crashgen

It goes by time that's about 70% of the price. $11 an hour is around minimum wage but that can vary depending on where you live, so if it takes you 4 hours, x by your quality and time that makes the price. So you can range between $20 to $40 or 70$ ect ect* full body, . But as you get better the price can go up cuz you're getting a higher quality and of course if you're spending more time then that effects price. regarding the pixelation, I would suggest changing the canvas size depending on how many details you think you're going to add (can't say the exact numbers bc everybody's art is different, but you can play with the width and height numbers and figure out what's the best for you), it's usually offered when starting a new artwork, I believe Procreate should be no different :) hope this helps! ☺️

You don't have to have a style. If you really want to develop one though study light/shadows. Play with effects and see what you naturally go towards when you shade! You can look at how other people do it, but that might lead you to your own imitation of their style (granted this as well can lead to you developing yours especially as you pick what you like and apply those techniques). Overall there is no way to tell you the only thing you can do is find what you gravitate to naturally and work on being consistent in your techniques to truly develope a style. As someone who has done digital art for 13years this would be my advice from one artist to another.

against the pixelation: go to "crop & resize", find a canvas shape you like (where the proportions of width to height look good to you) and tap the little chain icon between the width and height values. This will lock in the proportions the way they are currently. Then, expand the canvas until you reach about 40 maximum layers. That should give you a good resolution. Additionally, you can set the dpi value to 300. I'm not sure what that does, but it makes the picture look better, and you need to do it if you're going to print it.

If we are talking about commissions then I have some questions. For example if the artist draws digital then when someone wants to have something drawn it will be just a digital drawing not printed right? We need to send it to their e-mail or something like that? But e-mail quality is too bad. Through instagram the quality is also bad. So where? And what should be the deadline? And the drawing cannot be printed because of the poor quality (I draw on procreate). But if they don't want it to be digital? Are ypur commission like a digital art? Are most commissions digital? Or printed and sent?

I've done commissions It's digital nothing is printed and sent as is, the deadline is made by the artist or specifically asked for by the artist

You do generally want your prices in an easy to find place like a comm sheet or Google form, juuuust maybe not your bio? And 50% or 100% upfront is a good hard rule to have, don't get scammed!

I don’t see enough artists list what medium they can take payment through. I see just “-Money” way too often. I’ve asked a lot of artists before and I’m kinda at the point where I’ll pass on commissioning them instead of bothering them with “Can you take Venmo?”

where are good places to post commissions? i have a very small following on instagram so even though i have my commissions posted no one dms me, ive tried posting them on subreddits multiple times but they always get lost in the sea of commissions, ive even tried posting them on promote me sections of a couple discord servers but no one really checks those, my commissions have been up for around a year and a half now and ive only gotten 3 commissions, all by people i know

This would be so good I also seem to have that problem as well. I suggest not even putting your full effort on instagram as I've seen that after 2018 it became an algorithmic hell to even build a decent following. As of now I'm not sure yet what's working for me either atm.

I have like 4 followers on Instagram so i feel you. I am also posting on DeviantArt and there are a bit more people following me, and I posted a drawing and said I wanted to be commissioned or something like that, and someone actually dm me to know if my commissions/ requests were opened. They actually wanted to request something, which I did, but yeah, DeviantArt is pretty nice imo. And you can also post reels for Instagram, especially if you follow art trends (me and my bf in different universes kind of stuff) I've never tried it because I don't really like reels but I really think it can help. Good luck!

What if I want to charge a certain amount a minute or hour? Is that ok? Because what if I do a portrait with a character who has a tone of accessories or characteristics and it takes me like 2 hours…. Edit: of course I would charge a certain amount ever hour/minute for different requests, like a full body I would charge more a hour/minute

Honestly when you have a big following it really helps. Like, the super popular artists seem to get away with those prices because they're well known, and trusted in the community. If you're a small time artist, yes you deserve that amount, but people aren't as willing to give away that money to someone they don't know as well.

@@4tarobyte id heard that too, in my state, Texas, it’s confusing, cause on the off chance that maybe I make more than that, I need to have a venders license and I need something for that license, and idk exactly the right way to go thru that process here, or anywhere. It’s just hella confusing. You basically need to register as a business.
