Great exercise! If you're a beginner and this feels hard, just be patient and keep at it. Trust me, however terrible and awkward it feels at first (and it feels that way for EVERYONE), keep at it, it's worth it.

It took hours to learn thumb independence. It helped to just pluck without the fret hang doing not but muting the strings

The biggest enemy of becoming a good guitar player is tab. Memorize the fret board and change the numbers into notes. Then make sure you know the scales in the positions.
